Do you ever get that thing, when you're trying to sleep but can't, because your arms are JUST IN THE WAY

and no matter what you do or where you put them, they just GET IN THE WAY.

I can't describe it accurately any other way, I'm afraid. DH knew exactly what I meant when I told him that was why I couldn't sleep last night.

GrinGrinGrinRidiculous, isn't it?

This has happened to me. I have a pain in one shoulder/arm that is worse at night and it has made me very aware of the inconvenience of arms at night in bed. I can't sleep on my front, hurts breasts and I just don't feel comfortable. I can't sleep on my back either, I snore. But I also have sinus problems and get post nasal drip when I lie on my back. None of this was a problem when I was younger. One of the unexpected "joys" of getting older.

Sarcelle - are you me

SecretWitch · 21/01/2020 08:40

I thought it was just me! I usually end up wrapping my arms around each other, although once I woke up to the feeling of someone touching my face and nearly screamed. Turns out, my hand had fallen asleep and was brushing my face.

Biancadelrioisback · 21/01/2020 08:46

Yes!!
I've started sleeping with my pillow running down my body, so I can sort of hug it. Gets rid of my arms for a bit but I've got to fall asleep within 20 mins or so, otherwise I need to rip my arms off

legoninjago1 · 21/01/2020 08:51

Yep. I wrap myself in the duvet to make little shelves for my arms.

Daddylonglegs1965 · 21/01/2020 08:58

Someone could make a fortune if they came up with a solution for ‘uncomfortable arms in bed’.

Howgreenwasmyvalley · 21/01/2020 09:39

Ive never noticed this, but I bet I will tonight now my attention has been drawn to it Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 21/01/2020 09:44

Yes, but I have the luxury of being able to roll onto my back and spread arms and legs out flat. That usually sorts it.

One of the small joys of being single notwithstanding the cat who can easily expand to 3 x his normal size when sleeping on my bed

ThreeRandomWords · 21/01/2020 09:52

Buy a decent mattress! I bought a memory foam one and no longer wake up with sore, aching neck and shoulders.

spiderlight · 21/01/2020 10:01

Yes! I thought it was just me! Strangely they're never in the way in the mornings when I'm trying to wake up though.

avocadotofu · 21/01/2020 10:18

I totally know what you mean, this happens to me a lot. I'm glad I'm not the only one Grin

Daddylonglegs1965 · 21/01/2020 15:44

ThreeRandomWords - We have an extremely decent mattress this never bothered me at all until I hit my 50’s. Strangely enough the HRT patches (which the pharmacy now can’t get hold of) resolved this issue within days but the HRT tablets did nothing for this so it’s back with a vengence.

SheilaHammond · 21/01/2020 17:02

God yes bloody arms. Also feet if you lie on your back.. All flopping to one side and the backs of your heels feeling weird on the mattress. But if you lay on your side your ankle bones might touch on the pointy inner bit and that will help me throw up. Same with knees touching. Urgh is like accidentally crashing your top and bottom front teeth closed but the wrong way round.

ecuse · 21/01/2020 17:05

God, yes
Also whoever it was upthread who talked about tongue being too big for their mouth: this has been driving me crazy lately!

Jux · 21/01/2020 17:37

Wow! Look at us all!

@ThreeRandomWords, I have a memory foam mattress, proper Tempur one. It makes no difference. When the arms are in the way, the arms are in the way and that's just how it is.

And Yes Yes Yes to unscrewing the damn things at bedtime. I have a nice umbrella stand that would do very well. I would go further perhaps, and take my body apart, leg there, arms there, torso here, head there. Gives the term "putting to bed" a whole new meaning.Grin

Ok, no offence meant regarding the mattress. But I used to always have the "arm in the way" thing and aching arms and shoulders every morning and a new mattress cured that overnight. Maybe for at least some of you, it might help?

PalindromicUser · 21/01/2020 21:52

Oh my god I thought it was just me. I nearly posted asking wtf side sleepers are supposed to do with their underneath arms because I am clearly not privy to something you all know. And now I know that there is no answer.

And yes with bells on to this I started to put mine above my head to get them out of the way but I wake up with a dead arm!

I once woke in the night with a dead arm then started screaming because I had a huge spider on my face. DH thought I was mental having a nightmare. Turn out to be my dead arm Blush

taybert · 21/01/2020 21:55

I like the unscrewing of arms idea. But once you’d taken one off, how would you get the other one off? Confused

Lllot5 · 21/01/2020 21:59

My shoulders are the worst. They keep trying to edge up near my ears.
The only cure is to sleep on my front with one arm bent up and one hand down the front if my pjs

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 21/01/2020 22:07

I seem to remember that this was never a problem when we were small enough to cuddle our teddies in bed.

Maybe the solution is to send DH to the spare room and borrow one of DD's Build-a-Bears?!

ArthurDentsSpaceTowel · 21/01/2020 22:10

My problem is that once I become aware that I'm breathing, I find it very hard to switch off that awareness. Restless lungs if you like.

MustDust · 21/01/2020 22:10

Ah my people! DH and I have said for years why can't you zip them off at night? Where are supposed to put them when you want to cuddle too?

BruceAndNosh · 21/01/2020 22:14

I have found my people.
I'd give you all a hug but my bloody arms are always in the wrong place.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/01/2020 22:16

I hate when they get in the way when I snuggle up with the other half. I've always said I need a zip off arm!
