Do you miss your iPhone?

My last three phones have been iPhones - and the first two were great. My current one however (a 5SE) has been a bit of a pain since the start (I really wish I'd sorted it before the warranty ran out, but hey ho). It's got to the point now where the battery will be 100% when I leave the house, and then 1% by the time I arrive at work - having listened to music for just 30 mins.

Took it to Apple and they said that I could get a new battery fitted, but it's soon going to be obsolete anyway (thanks for selling it to me 18 months ago Hmm)

So basically, I'm thinking of jumping ship and buying a cheapish phone outright - and I'm looking for others who have made the jump from iPhones. Do you regret it??

And if anyone wants to recommend a phone, I'm looking to spend no more than £350, good battery life, semi-decent camera, good sound (big music/podcast listener!) and no super massive. TIA! Smile

Every time I decide to try a Samsung I always massively regret it. Any ive had are just so laggy and unresponsive.

RedSoloCup · 20/01/2020 19:47

I would buy a recon iPhone with warranty for your budget I'm on my third from eBay with no issues

CloudonLegs · 20/01/2020 19:49

I changed and regretted it and I'm now back to an iPhone and I won't change again.

I tried Samsung, Sony and huawei and wasn't impressed with any of them in the best case scenario and had to return it within a month in the worst case scenario.

Everyone will have different needs and wants though so a different type might suit you.

jessicama · 20/01/2020 20:24

Ha, okay maybe it isn't as clear cut a decision after all! Thanks everyone for the insights

@okiedokieme - that's actually probably the best short term plan... largely it is just the battery that is being problematic at the moment (as annoying as it is)

@tanstaafl and @megloveseggs - I'd kind of narrowed it down to the Moto G8 plus when I was looking earlier! I'd read some good reviews about battery life and sound. Do you find it quite big? How are the photos?

@RedSoloCup Also a good idea I hadn't considered - how old do they tend to be?

No. I switched from iPhone to cheapest Samsung and it is so much better.

GorkyMcPorky · 20/01/2020 20:30

I love my Pixel 3. There are some obscure apps I can't get (GymJam used by my gym chain for timetables) but nothing worth the extra expense of an iPhone. The camera is excellent.

BertieBotts · 20/01/2020 20:40

I have a Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact which I love. The only thing I'm disappointed in is the video quality. The camera is great, the video is not. The battery lasts me 2-3 days which is the best of any phone I've had in about 10 years. It runs everything I've tried to run on it. The screen looks nice. And I can use it one handed, which was my main criteria. I also like that it's waterproof and has gorilla glass (scratch/shatter resistant). I have a rubbery case on it because I'm massively clumsy but (touch wood) it's survived a lot of drops.

I think there's a newer one which has a better camera so the video might be better on that. I wouldn't be a very good judge of sound, but it sounds alright to me, nothing tinny or horrible anyway. I use it to listen to podcasts and music quite often and don't find it a problem to do this.

Try the advanced search on GSM Arena set to battery life and a maximum size. I worked out what I could use one handed and put that in, then specified that it needed waterproofing, and it sent me back 4 phones. I picked the one I liked best, and it's turned out to be my favourite phone ever. I've had it about 18 months now. Had a newer Samsung before this and hated it.

BertieBotts · 20/01/2020 20:42

Yep, Whatsapp Video works fine. I also use Facebook messenger video for my mum as she prefers that (can do it from her laptop) and we do Duo between the android users if Whatsapp is being laggy, that worked much better when DH was in a hotel with crappy slow internet, and also works better for MIL as she can answer with a tap rather than having to slide which she couldn't manage.

Motherofmonsters · 20/01/2020 20:44

Ive swapped with over to a Nokia 4.2 bought for £100 and I don't miss my iPhone. Camera is decent and does everything I need it to do.

Likethebattle · 20/01/2020 21:13

Husband changed to android, spent £700 on a phone....within 4 months he sold it (£400) and bought an i-phone so he was £300 down overall. He despised android!

Letseatgrandma · 20/01/2020 21:17

DH has a Samsung but it’s horrible!

All have iPhones here-can’t see any of us changing.

GroggyLegs · 20/01/2020 21:26

Former iphone owner here. I wouldn't consider one now.

I currently have a moto g5 which was cheap as chips 2 years ago - the battery life is fantastic, camera is great & it does everything I need. It was under £200 new.

I'm waiting for the new release in spring to trade up to a G8 or get a good deal on a G7, only because my screen is like crazy paving (my fault!).

Elieza · 20/01/2020 21:34

Id just spend the £49 for a new battery.
Or less if you go to a small repair shop. Check reviews first obv.

I’ve the same phone as you. Ok so far. Mines from sky who are now offering me a 7 for £15 per month. It’s no longer in apple shops so that’s prob why. Have a look on their site and see how much one you like costs.

DianaT1969 · 20/01/2020 21:37

I have Moto G6 plus. Bought outright, which felt better. A very good phone for the money. Battery lasts all day with heavy usage. I used to have an iPhone, but the battery lasted 2-4 hours after a year.
Apps aren't as good on android. Some things aren't as intuitive. But overall, the camera is good. Screen big and good for video.
Will probably get a G8 after this, or their newer model. Interested in Samsung now that I have seen reviews on here.

missnevermind · 20/01/2020 23:49

I had iPhones for years. Switched to a Huawei November. Love it. I wouldn't go back to an lphone now. Everybody told me it would be hard to change but it was no more difficult than any new phone.

Oaky321 · 20/01/2020 23:53

To be fair why did you buy a 5 in 2018? Crazy idea!

perhapstomorrow · 21/01/2020 00:06

Can't comment on switching from iphone to Android but thought I'd mention buying a second hand phone instead of new. All the iPhone's I've bought my dc have been refurbished. The most recent was an iphone7 with 128gb storage for £250. It was in excellent condition and had no scratches. It means you can get a very cheap monthly contract. I have found music magpie to be very good.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/01/2020 00:10

I'm with the pp, Motorola. Do not underestimate what good phones they are.

JohnVirgo · 21/01/2020 00:26

It's not a 5 it's an SE which is actually a 6 internally.

I changed and went back to iPhone.

OP there is a 'battery health' option in the settings. It will show you the capacity your phone is working on. One of my DC has an SE which is 76% so when it's fully charged and showing 100% on the display it's actually only 76% full. There isn't much you can do but it will give you an idea of how bad the battery 'officially' is.

ioioitsoff · 21/01/2020 00:35

I have an old iPhone, I have to charge it every two or three days. It was 2nd hand when I bought it just over a year ago, I think it's an iPhone 6

HoldMyLobster · 21/01/2020 00:43

Years ago I switched from an iPhone to an HTC Shite.

I persevered with that fucker for more than a year, then finally gave up in disgust after I'd had to return two different handsets that had gone wrong.

Never had similar struggles with any iPhones, but I may have just been unlucky. I'm also a designer and use Macs for everything so they work well with those.

BallerinaTutu · 21/01/2020 01:09

@missnevermind I'd be one of the people saying it might be hard to switch but really it depends what you use your phone for. Mine is full of games, books, films and tv I've paid for, I've also got a subscription to Apple Music. So if I move away from Apple I lose it all. If you don't have those and all of the apps you want are also on Android, you're not missing out on as much.

I do find android to be full of crap I never use that can't be deleted, laggy and the App Store is full of crap, however, I have an Android tablet and an iPhone because of different needs on the two devices.

I think phones are personal and what's right for one person wouldn't work for everyone. I second using GSM arena to compare phones and also watching plenty of YouTube videos before switching though. There's often 'a week using X phone' videos and similar also watch reviews by ijustine if she's done one for the phone you want, she's an iPhone user but reviews android phones as well as apple products. She's fair and she tells you what you'd miss out on and what you'd gain as an Apple user switching to android.

PenelopeFlintstone · 21/01/2020 01:21

My DH is still using his iphone 4. It’s true he only uses the phone function.
I’d just get a new battery for your phone, like a PP said.

Nat6999 · 21/01/2020 02:31

After having 3 iPhones I swapped to Samsung & snow on my third Samsung phone. I wish I had gone android right from the start, the battery life, ability to expand memory with a card, the extra apps & accessibility of my Samsung phones is a thousand times better than apple.
