What to do with expensive item of jewellery that exh gave me?

NemophilistRebel · 19/01/2020 18:26

I have an Elsa Peretti open heart necklace

The one in the picture attached

It was given to me by my abusive exh and I therefore don’t wear it

What’s the best thing to do with it?

It was £645 new but won’t be worth hardly anything second hand on eBay or the like

Should I just list it and be glad to have got rid?

I'd get rid. New jewellery is always a poor investment. Take what you can.

alliejay81 · 19/01/2020 18:31

Can you have it melted down and made into a pendant? Would be a great positive symbol of moving on?

ioioitsoff · 19/01/2020 18:35

Sell it or just bin it.

Sell it, even if you only get £10 for it and donate the money to a women's refuge.

jeremypaxo · 19/01/2020 18:39

Don't bin it! Christ. Give it to a charity shop.

FabbyChix · 19/01/2020 18:41

Should make half what it cost

Aderyn19 · 19/01/2020 18:43

I think you should put it on eBay and give the proceeds to a women's refuge.

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/01/2020 18:44

Off topic but that cost £645? 😱

FaceLikeAFlittin · 19/01/2020 18:44

You should eBay it, you will be surprised how much you’ll get. Elsa Peretti items are beautiful.

If it bothers you to pass it on with negative energy, smudge it with smoky sage, lay it on sea salt for a few days and let it sit in sunlight.

Woo but I love vintage pieces, I like to make sure the sadness has left them. My friend did this for me when I bought a beautiful pendant from a sad house clearance. I’ve done it with all my finds since because she put the fear in me. Blush

SquashedOrange · 19/01/2020 18:45

Sell it, why wouldn't you? Even of you donate/ gift the money to someone.

Don't bin it, that's crazy.

speakout · 19/01/2020 18:47

A quick ebay advanced search shows you may get £60-£80. Probably its true worth.
I would take even that and treat yourself.

ProfYaffle · 19/01/2020 18:48

I like the idea of giving it to a charity shop, make sure they know what it is, let them have the money to do some good with.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 19/01/2020 18:51

Sell it, or if you wanted you could treat yourself to another charm? The staff at Tiffany will then arrange for your necklace to be altered and the old charm removed. Just a thought :)

TriangleBingoBongo · 19/01/2020 18:52

Sell it, whatever you get is better than nothing.

Buy a meal out with proceeds!

GlamGiraffe · 19/01/2020 18:55

If you have thr paperwork you might have a better chance of getting a better price on ebay or even a local auction, I'd check for one which does online bidding too. It might be worth speaking to them yo gauge a price. The problem is ebay sells so much fake tiffany jewellery I dont think you'll get any money.
It would be nice to get some money to buy something with a symbolic new meaning to you or yo make a significant donation if that's your preference. Speak yo an auctioneer.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 19/01/2020 18:56

If your ex was abusive, you might want to check the necklace is legitimate before trying to sell it.

I know someone with an arsehole ex who bought them counterfeit items and passed them off as real. If you’re trying to sell on it might cause you more grief. If you’re close to a store, pop in, they will be able to help you.

katielilly · 19/01/2020 18:56

What about a local pawnbroker? Easier than messing about on eBay.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 19/01/2020 18:57

@AlexaAmbidextra it does have a diamond in it if it’s the one I’m thinking of 😂

NemophilistRebel · 19/01/2020 19:02

@AlexaAmbidextra I was shocked when I just realised that’s how much it was too
He was a showy flash bastard

I am not a Tiffany kind of person at all

If you took it to a silversmith they could melt it down for you and make into something new, perhaps a pendant or some earrings. That's what I'd do.

In fact I did when I had some jewellery left to me that wasn't to my taste. Now I love it and wear it lots as had it remade into charms for my charm bracelet.

runoutofnamechanges · 19/01/2020 19:14

A quick ebay advanced search shows you may get £60-£80. Probably its true worth. Nooooooo!!!!! That's the basic silver version, the £645 version that the OP has has a diamond. Also, there are a lot of fakes on eBay...

I wouldn't risk selling it on eBay, too high a chance of a scammer claiming it's fake/never arrived. It's also not worth melting it down to make into something else as it is worth more as it is. It's such a classic design that it does hold it's value better than most secondhand jewellery. You ought to be able to get a decent amount for it. If you can wait out for a private sale (cash), you will get the most money for it.

georgialondon · 19/01/2020 19:15

Definitely eBay it

speakout · 19/01/2020 19:16

SilveryMountainStream

THe cost of doing that will be more than the item is worth. And the OP is still left with a ( very small) lump of re-shaped silver.
Better to sell it for £60 and have a night out.

katewhinesalot · 19/01/2020 19:16

Is there anyone special that you could gift it to? If not, I'd just sell it and spend the money on something he'd have hated or just some luxury that you wouldn't normally splurge on.

AnotherEmma · 19/01/2020 19:16

You should sell it on eBay or maybe see if there are any local second hand jewellery shops that would buy it off you (I would just eBay it though).

Do it fast because Valentine's Day is coming up so you might get someone buying it as a V-day gift!
