Porridge pots - can I make a copy?

I often take a porridge pot to work for breakfast but the waste of the tub every day is bothering me.

I have to get to work early to get parked so I have time available there so don't want to get up earlier to eat at home.

I have access to a kettle but not a microwave.

I presume it's just a porridge / dried milk combo? Does anyone make their own??

Could you buy glass jars and make overnight oats the night before? It’s cold but bloody delicious.

Ahdjdkfbdixbsk · 18/01/2020 07:54

Overnight oats with just milk can be microwaved.

Iggly · 18/01/2020 07:55

Isn’t it just glorified ready brek?

If you can source instant porridge and just use a normal bowl.

Why not make traditional porridge (in a saucepan with oats and milk) the night before and bring in tubberware.

Tanaqui · 18/01/2020 07:57

Buy the sachets instead of the pots?

BookShop · 18/01/2020 07:58

Make it at home and use a thermos? They have some lovely wide colourful designs. My kids love theirs.

KatyMac · 18/01/2020 07:58

here

Not tried it but it looks like ready brek

Can you buy a small microwave for work? That’s what I did. It’s now on the annual PAT test list and it’s so convenient.

I just weigh a portion and microwave it .... with the office milk.

MrsPresley · 18/01/2020 08:02

OP says she doesn't have access to a microwave!

Palavah · 18/01/2020 08:03

Sorry just re-read and seen no microwave!
You can add the milk to the oats the night before and then add boiling water at work, leaving the lid on for it to 'cook'. It will do so better if it's not straight from the fridge.

I do 1 part porridge, 1 part milk, 1 part water.

NauseousNancy · 18/01/2020 08:06

I make them :)

I make a big tub of them and then dish them into a smaller tub each day to take to work.

The amounts for individual portions are:

35g oats (I use Lidl oatilicious)
15g instant oats (like ready break)
10g dried milk powder
10g sugar.

I then add whatever I fancy - cinnamon and raisins is my fav.

I add some boiling water, to just cover the Oats and then leave for about 5 mins. You’ll get to know how much water to make them the way you like.

I like doing them this way because I don’t then need to use the microwave (which is gross)

delilahbucket · 18/01/2020 08:08

I eat the instant porridge by The Great British Porridge Company. It comes in a bag and you portion out what you want into a bowl. Add hot water, stir, eat. It's expensive compared to normal porridge oats, but a lot cheaper than the pots.

lilgreen · 18/01/2020 08:10

I make porridge in the microwave anyway.
2 mins.

lilgreen · 18/01/2020 08:11

Oh no microwave!!! Get your boss to buy one. Cheap as chips.

TeachesOfPeaches · 18/01/2020 08:13

I found a new brand which does porridge oats sachets which you just add boiling water to so no need for a microwave. Can't remember the brand, but all you need is a mug to put them in and a spoon to stir.

cheesewitheverything · 18/01/2020 08:24

Some of you are going to think this is gross, but most days at work I would take cold porridge for lunch left over from my breakfast porridge. It always had lots of nice things in it, not just plain and I loved it. I had a job where I would often find myself having to eat in the car with no access to even a kettle so it at least felt I'd had something healthy-ish for lunch. I sometimes still do that for lunch even though I don't do that job any more. Don't knock it till you've tried it!

ncqtime · 18/01/2020 08:31

So how about start by checking the ingredients in your current pots and copy by adding this stuff to e.g. a jam jar? Also as someone else said you could add your usual milk to the jar before you leave then top up with boiling water at work in a 1:1:1 ratio of oats:milk:water. Add raisins, banana, cinnamon, whatever you like...

PlaymobilPirate · 18/01/2020 08:34

I don't want to buy a microwave as it'll end up minging, people will nuke disgusting things in it and I won't want to use it again Grin

NauseousNancy · 18/01/2020 09:07

Try the recipe I put up - I used to use the instant pots and it’s practically identical :)

1idea · 18/01/2020 09:14

I add boiling water to porridge in a plastic tub before leaving for work by the time I get there it has steam cooked. It too a bit of time to get a good porridge some seem a bit dusty. I have a similar parking situation, if I have miscalculated the water to porridge ratio I just add a bit more water from my bottle.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 18/01/2020 09:18

I've got a sistema pot that goes in the microwave, I put the porridge oats, milk and stick on for 2 mins. it's easy to wash up aswell :)

JigsawsAreInPieces · 18/01/2020 09:52

Op states she has no access to a microwave yet morons keep giving advice that needs a microwave. How does that help?

apart identifying those who should never be allowed a vote

Palavah · 18/01/2020 10:10

@jigsawsareinpieces there is no need to be so rude. I reported my post and posted a new one. Hmm

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 18/01/2020 10:27

Do the microwaving at home and take it in some sort of thermal pot that should keep it hot for a couple of hours.

I recently started a new job and soon spotted the need for a microwave. We all popped in about £4 and I have designated myself microwave monitor ie I swish a wipe around it occasionally. I am the one who uses it the most. (It makes splendid porridge 😉) I think everyone else's use is minimal.
