DD (15.5) no periods. When to be concerned?

DR (15.5) hasn't started her periods. She has quite a small build (5ft 3ish) and probably about 7.5 stone. Should I be worried? She is concerned and has concluded that "it's never going to happen"

Presume there are other signs of puberty?
I was tiny as a teenager and didn’t start until approx 16.
But is prob worth a trip to the Gp if they don’t appear soon.

Hellvelyn · 17/01/2020 23:04

Yes - boobs and body hair, though later to arrive than some of her peers according to dd.

I think I read somewhere that periods usually start about 2 years after body hair.
I’d give it until 16 then see gp-just incase there is an underlying issue because the lack of hormones can be detrimental long term to bone density etc as well the obvious issues.

I didn't get my first period until then. My mum was a late starter too. I'm glad of it now as periods are miserable but it did feel like I'd been left behind at the time! I imagine it'll arrive in the next few months.

AnyFucker · 17/01/2020 23:09

I would see the gp now, tbh

Just to put your mind at rest

ShakeItUp · 17/01/2020 23:10

I think G Ps only become concerned when the girls get to around 17 and periods still haven't begun.
Some girls don't start until late teens, unusual but not unheard of.
My youngest daughter is 26 and still hasn't started hers, they don't know why.
My middle daughter was almost 19 when she started hers.
My two eldest daughters were 10 and 12.
I wouldn't worry too much at the moment.

LadyGAgain · 17/01/2020 23:11

Is she a dancer or a gymnast?

Hellvelyn · 17/01/2020 23:11

I started just after I turned 13. I was taller than dd but also very slender.

NHS generally counts periods not started by 15 as delayed, so I'd go now.

shedidwhatnow · 17/01/2020 23:12

No periods at 26?! Is that not hugely concerning @ShakeItUp

DramaAlpaca · 17/01/2020 23:13

It's within normal range, but I agree with AF that a trip to the GP would do no harm at this stage, even if just for reassurance.

BiMum5 · 17/01/2020 23:13

I was 14+6 when I started. My sister was well over 15 ( and very worried!) Normal fertility for both of us.

Murinae · 17/01/2020 23:14

My daughters were over 16 too.

Wishforsnow · 17/01/2020 23:14

I was 16, quite sporty maybe that's why. Have always been regular and never any issues

Hellvelyn · 17/01/2020 23:14

Dancer- three classes a week plus GCSE dance at school

The NHS count it as delayed puberty if periods haven't started by 15 so I'd book a GP appointment. www.nhs.uk/conditions/early-or-delayed-puberty/

BarkBarkBark · 17/01/2020 23:19

I started at 16. Have 4 children now and a clockwork cycle.

Bluerussian · 17/01/2020 23:19

My cousin started at 16 as did a friend of mine's daughter. Nothing wrong with either of them.

As long as your daughter is healthy, don't worry. I'm sure she'll start soon. Go to the doctor after she is sixteen if nothing has happened. However, if she is seriously concerned she could go now, it won't hurt.

One of my daughters was very short (can't remember exactly how tall, but she was one of the shortest in her class and at 13, she was mistaken for an 8 year old!

She tells me she was the last in her class to start her periods. I can't remember now what order things happened in but sometime when she was 15 she had her first period and had a huge growth spurt. She is now 5'8.

AnyFucker · 17/01/2020 23:23

@ShakeItUp what tests has your 26yo daughter had exactly ?

ShakeItUp · 17/01/2020 23:23

@shedidwhatnow we have been to different specialist, had various tests and the only thing that any of them can conclude is that she may lack oestrogen as her bust has never developed either.
Her chest is as flat today as it was when she was six.
They concluded this as they tried her with oestrogen, by the way of the pill and after a few weeks she had a very slight period, but she felt generally unwell with it, so stopped the treatment.
They don't know why she isn't producing the hormone necessary.

eatanazurecrayon · 17/01/2020 23:24

My friend was a dancer and her periods are still a mess. Something about the intense exercise and lack of body fat?

Wasail · 17/01/2020 23:24

I started at nearly 17, very sporty. Didn’t settle to regular till I was 21- as in it was every 3-6 months till then. I have 2 DC and am no where near perimenopause age 48 now.

ShakeItUp · 17/01/2020 23:28

@AnyFucker she's had physical tests, as in gynaecological including internal and external ultrasound, along with blood tests to check hormones.
The ultrasounds came back normal, as in no fibroids etc and the bloods came back with a negligible oestrogen level, hence their conclusion.

AnyFucker · 17/01/2020 23:31

She hasn't had genetic testing ?

What advice has she been given going forward ?
