We tend to go for scotch. Haig is nice. Sometimes they have it on special at morrisons for £16.00. Will drink a grants or a Bells. Also Famouse grouse smokey black is sometimes on offer . Jamesons is an irish nice if on offer. (We tend to see whats on offer.)

Theodoreb · 17/01/2020 18:54

I had a lovely bottle of haig for Christmas first time I've tried it. I like grants and famous grouse too.

Single barrel jack Daniels on ice.

Best.

Thing.

Ever.

willothewispa · 17/01/2020 19:23

Have you tried white whisky?

WooMaWang · 17/01/2020 19:26

Makers mark is really nice.

Theodoreb · 17/01/2020 19:26

@willothewispa oooo didn't even know there was a thing such as white whiskey where can I buy some please?

Jura make very nice whisky, tomatin is another good brand to try too.

delilahbucket · 17/01/2020 19:27

I bought dp Jonnie Walker Fire and Ice for Christmas. He thinks they're some of the nicest whiskies he's ever had. The Fire one is very smooth.

Theodoreb · 17/01/2020 20:21

Lots of good suggestions like the sound of fire and ice will be broadening my pallet and giving these a try.

Chita (is that how you spell it?). Costs somewhere between £5-10 for a double. It’s my go to because it’s the only Japanese whisky readily available in British pubs. Don’t keep alcohol in the house so don’t know cost per bottle.

HermioneWeasley · 17/01/2020 20:25

Lagavulin

FruityWidow · 17/01/2020 20:29

Cheapest bottle of anything from the supermarket. Add a load of blackberries and a ton of sugar and leave it for a few months (or a couple of years if you can wait that long).

Smoother and better than anything off the fancy pricey shelf.

WooMaWang · 17/01/2020 20:58

DP likes Johnny walker blue label a lot. It's bloody expensive though.

francienolan · 17/01/2020 22:51

I like Glenlivet. Possible to find it on offer at supermarkets sometimes.

Dowser · 17/01/2020 23:43

Dh is a big whiskey fan. He’ll drink anything..except teachers..he hates that. He even gave a bottle of it away to my son.
I once paid £99 for a bottle of something he tried and liked the taste of.
Something obscure...his choice..wouldn’t have been mine.
He usually gets famous grouse when he just wants a cheapie and I think there’s an aldi one he rather likes.

FlyingNorth · 17/01/2020 23:44

Nikka Japanese whiskey. Smooth as silk. No idea how much it costs but not too much, I don't think.

Chihaha · 17/01/2020 23:48

I would suspect lagavulin will not be to your taste. Do you drink whisky with a mixer?

AgeLikeWine · 17/01/2020 23:57

I love peaty Island malts. My absolute favourite whisky is Ardbeg, closely followed by Lagavulin, Laphroiag and Talisker.

These whiskies are most definitely not for everyone, being the polar opposite of ‘smooth’, but some popular blends contain a splash of pleated malt which is balanced by lighter whiskies. Johnnie Walker Black label being a good example.

Chelsea26 · 18/01/2020 00:00

Glenfiddich 12 or 15

If you’re serious about broadening your palette it might be an idea to find a whiskey map and plot what you like... it’s kind of an axis that goes from smokey to floral one way and rich to light the other - when you plot the whiskey you like on it you will normally end up in a quadrant that you prefer and then it’s really easy to get recommendations that for to your taste IYKWIM

DartmoorChef · 18/01/2020 00:02

Laphroaig is a very acquired taste. Personally I detest it and all other peat based whisky. It tastes like tcp.

I prefer Irish whiskeys like Jamesons or Bushmills. Monkey shoulder is lovely too.

theoldtrout01876 · 18/01/2020 00:12

Knob creek bourbon, its very very lovely Grin

Stressedmummyof4 · 18/01/2020 00:32

If ever in Ireland please try Irish Mist amazing over ice. We travel to Ireland twice a year for family and keep our cupboard stocked x

Theodoreb · 18/01/2020 09:11

@Chihaha I drink it straight and with coke.

I drink it with coke if I want the drink to last a while and as a shot if I want to taste it so depends on my mood.

Chihaha · 18/01/2020 11:28

You're getting lots of recommendations of malts, I would buy a miniature and see if you like say one peaty malt before buying a bottle as they dont mix well with, well, anything...
