What area to stay in in Paris- tearing my hear out

Can anyone recommend an area to stay in in Paris? I’ve been looking for weeks and weeks. We just want somewhere cheap and cheerful, but I haven’t got a clue where to start in terms of areas. I’ve just been looking at around the Eiffel Tower as I don’t know Paris at all but then I’ve heard about the Latin quarter... if I knew what areas were central and have a good choice of bars and cafe’s that would really help!

Thanks

I have stayed in some lovely air bnbs in the 18th.

Near Sacre Couer

Abbesses / Pigalle is a great area, loads to do and see and eat and drink, plus handy for the metro to get to other areas.

To be honest Paris isn’t so big that you’ll miss out on good bits depending on where you stay. If you are central it’s pretty easy to walk around and fill in with the metro. And there are good bars and cafes everywhere!

Marais

MNOverinvestor · 16/01/2020 15:10

If you're coming by Eurostar, I'd stay Abbesses/Pigalle for ease of access. I like Anvers as well and it's only a short walk from Gare du Nord. Love rue des Martyrs - one of Paris's foodiest streets without being pretentious about it.

endofthelinefinally · 16/01/2020 15:12

Are the strikes over? I thought they were continuing till March.
Wherever you decide, OP, pick pockets are a complete nightmare.
Never put your phone on your table in a cafe.
Abbesses is quite expensive, but just a little further away is more reasonable.

HelloYouTwo · 16/01/2020 15:14

Don’t stay too near Gare du Nord!

Pollaidh · 16/01/2020 15:17

The Marais is gorgeous

endofthelinefinally · 16/01/2020 15:19

The area around Gare du Nord is grim.

Last time we were in Paris we stayed near galleries Lafayette, we were around the corner from the roissy bus stop, very handy for getting from the airport, and close to a metro stop, it was called opera i think. I can't remember the name of the hotel but it was very reasonable. We have stayed in a few different areas and found that the handiest. From there we walked to Notre Dame and the arc d'triomph, it's about 3km to both but flat so very doable even if you are not much of a walker. The louve is only about 1km away I think.

AbsentmindedWoman · 16/01/2020 15:48

The Marais, definitely.

Elowyn · 16/01/2020 16:18

Agree with previous posters, the Marais district is great

Definitely be wary of pickpockets and people trying to sell you friendship bracelets

HoHoHomeTimeFinally · 17/01/2020 08:13

Ok great thanks, think I’ll stick to The Marais area.

Thanks for the tips on pickpocketing, we went to Barcelona last year and that was horrendous for pick pocketing!

I’ve booked a nice hotel in that area with good review so thank you so much! Don’t suppose anyone has any airport shuttle recommendations...

OP, the Marais is lovely. Yes, there are pickpockets, but there arecin any city, you don’t have to be paranod just careful. Re: Airport connections, which airport are you flying too?

Honeyroar · 17/01/2020 09:42

The bus from the CDG airport to Opéra is good (think it’s called Roissybus. Otherwise the RER underground.

Buggedandconfused · 17/01/2020 09:44

Le Marais!!!

It’s cool, close to the attractions and great for metro’s etc.

I absolutely love Le Marais!!

HoHoHomeTimeFinally · 17/01/2020 09:58

We’re flying into CDG, we don’t land till about 8pm though so wasn’t sure if public transport would take too long?

It’s a long time since I lived there, I’m not sure what time things run anymore. Hopefully someone else will know.

BillThePony · 17/01/2020 10:25

We stay at the Maxim Folies in the 9th arr.

Lovely hotel at a good price and we find it easy to reach where we need to go.

We always get a taxi from CDG so not sure about public transport

WeshMaGueule · 17/01/2020 10:39

www.mije.com/auberge-jeunesse-paris this place is the best, cheap and in a lovely area.

SquishySquirmy · 17/01/2020 10:46

Montmartre is beautiful, interestingand still fairly cheap compared to other bits of Paris.
Near metro stations which connect to other bits of Paris. It's the part where all the bohemian arty types used to stay back in the day. I wouldn't stay in the bit right by the moulin rouge, but as a pp says the bit near sacred couer is lovely.

Forestwitch · 17/01/2020 10:49

Paris isn't what it used to be. Total sh!tehole these days.

cloud1183 · 17/01/2020 11:57

I went in the summer and loved it. Can also vouch for the Marais area. Lovely city
