If so, heads up (probably everyone knows this and I'm late to the party!!)

Go online to your account, click to cancel, and it will redirect you to a page where it will then offer you three months at 3.99 instead of 7.99. Cracking!

Happy to stay a while longer at that price (moves calendar reminder to cancel TO April)

Nope -you can return one you’ve finished. It does get wise to it if you return too many and stops you doing it for a while (about 4-6 weeks I think) but give you plenty to play with

Ginger153 · 15/01/2020 23:08

Ooh, love the top tips. I used to be a bbc radio iPlayer addict til Sounds came in and ruined everything! So difficult to find stuff. I restarted my audible account then.

Can you return stuff on the app or does it have to be website? Can't see how to do it on app. Thanks!

Will be checking some of these suggestions out and had never thought of following a particular narrator.

Pinkfizzy · 15/01/2020 23:10

I can't see how to return books on the app - always do it on a PC.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/01/2020 23:12

I've just done it in the app.
Press the menu (three line button)
Scroll down to My Account
Purchase History
Tap the book to return
Tap return
Choose a reason.

I was thinking of getting this.
If you get a subscription can you play on multiple devices? I have android and Apple devices.

Also do you need internet to play them or just to download?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/01/2020 23:15

Yes.

I can play it on my phone, TV and Echo Dot
It remembers where you left off when you switch devices as well. Smile

Ginger153 · 15/01/2020 23:19

Thanks @bernadette will explore

MrsFezziwig · 15/01/2020 23:29

for whatever reason, of you try to return too many they block it for a while!

Maybe the reason is that it’s not a free lending service Confused

RightOnTheEdge · 15/01/2020 23:39

I needed to cut down on what was going out of my bank every month so I decided Audiable would have to be one to go.
I was really sad because I love it makes housework so much better and I love having a bedtime story read to me Grin

I was persuaded to stay by the £3.99 offer. I will have to cancel it again when it goes back up. I don't suppose they will offer it again Sad

I listened to a sample of The Golden compass yesterday but I hated Lyra's silly voice and I didn't like Pan's grown up sounding voice either so that one is a no.

It's credit day for me tomorrow, I'm very excited but I've got no clue what to choose.
I quite like the Vera ones but there's not many, I think I might have them all.

RightOnTheEdge · 15/01/2020 23:42

Ooh one's that I really loved and couldn't turn off were the Strike books. I really hope she brings the next one out soon.

HerRoyalFattyness · 15/01/2020 23:42

Oooh I didn't realise you could return books!
Six returned, six more "bought" Grin

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 15/01/2020 23:44

I love audible as my concentration is poor and my eyesight is deteriorating so it's a great alternative to reading. I like to keep a couple of credits spare in case I run out of things to read so I am obviously the perfect mug customer as that way I'll never be able to leave. I try to get things in the 3 for 2 or 2 for 1 sales so I get a bit better value for my money.

Thanks all for the tips, have never tried returning but have some books I thought I'd like but didn't so will give it a go.

I recommend Lisa Jewel and Louise Candlish. I like modern mystery/chick lit with a hint of thriller type books. I always listen to the sample as the narrator is very important! The Rosie books by Graeme Simsion, Us by David Nichols, Matt Haig's The Humans and JP Delaney's The Girl Before were all great listens. I like Emilia Fox as a narrator and have listened to and enjoyed authors I'd never heard of because she was narrating.

OddBoots · 16/01/2020 06:43

I was reading a Twitter conversation about returning Audible books and when you do that the author gets charged as Audible take the money from them. For a big top selling author it probably doesn't make much difference but if it is a relatively new or small time author it can hit them hard.

Dowser · 16/01/2020 06:54

I thought about it. I decided when on a longish journey it might be nice to listen to a book.
We saw some Sherlock Holmes in a charity shop. Listened on the way home..about 45 mins
It was just too much. Maybe it was the wrong book, trying to piece all the clues together but concentrating on driving and listening to complex characters and clues was not possible.
Haven’t tried again since. Derek Jacobi was the narrator

Dowser · 16/01/2020 06:57

Does anyone listen when driving?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/01/2020 07:04

Yes, Dowser. I'm not a massive music listener so podcasts and audio books work best for me in the car.

Audible have promotions pretty much all the time. If you cancel your membership they always want you back Grin

I usually Google for Audible promotions around November every year and often get three months for free or three months at a reduced price. That way I'm a member over Christmas when there are loads of Audible sales on for members - this boxing day just gone for example I bought loads of books for £3 each. I also take advantage of the "buy three credits for £6 each" that members can do within the app. Once the three month offer is over I cancel my membership again as I've usually bought enough to last me the rest of the year. Then I do it again the following November.

You can return books up to a year after you've bought them. If it says you can't return one, you can email customer services and they'll do it for you. I like to keep mine as I enjoy re-listening, but I've returned a couple of duds.

My recommendation is the Sherlock Holmes books read by Stephen Fry - 72 hours worth of listening for one credit. They're wonderful.

user1495225181 · 16/01/2020 08:27

Just started Michelle Obama’s book which she narrates, it’s fantastic and she is an excellent narrator.

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/01/2020 08:59

I LOVE my Audible subscription! I use it mainly for non-fiction books (which don't work so well on a Kindle, I find, and tend to be very expensive in paperback). Things like Dan Snow's The Plantagenates and Ian Mortimer's Time Traveller's Guides to Medieval and Elizabethan England.

Don't use it so much for fiction, but do love the Harry Potters, with Stephen Fry and, oddly, some children's books (The Dark is Rising series).

Also great for listening when I'm running or in the car, so i can pretend I am getting cultured whilst exercising...

CeriBerry · 16/01/2020 20:09

I LOVE the His Dark Materials audio books, both the original trilogy and the Book of Dust ones by Michael Sheen. Find them magical. Isn’t it funny how we’re all different!

Shosha1 · 16/01/2020 20:17

I've hot about 500 books from audible. I love them. But I am very picky with narrators. Some that do a lot ( John Lee) I cant stand. He does a lot if the Ken Follet books. So I read them on kindle instead. Love Davina Porter who does all the Outlander books.
I find a lot of American voices hard to listen to, but do like regional, Scottish and Irish voices soothing.

I also get free ones through Kindle Unlimited. Ones that I probably wouldn't use a credit for but i can then try something different for free.

tangledyarn · 16/01/2020 20:43

Sorry that was me..it was meant as more as a warning than a criticism! I've bought 300 books and have returned less than 10 (usually because the narrator is terrible!)

Northernsoullover · 16/01/2020 20:49

I've returned 2 out of 50. They were genuinely not to my taste.

Veterinari · 16/01/2020 21:11

Brilliant! Thanks for sharing OP

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/01/2020 10:56

I also have trouble with some of the American narrators Shosha1. I love Bill Bryson narrating his own books, but the other man that does some of them (William Roberts) I just can't listen to.
