If so, heads up (probably everyone knows this and I'm late to the party!!)

Go online to your account, click to cancel, and it will redirect you to a page where it will then offer you three months at 3.99 instead of 7.99. Cracking!

Happy to stay a while longer at that price (moves calendar reminder to cancel TO April)

The quality of the narrators is really crucial I think. I have become obsessed with Timothy West, Prunella Scales, Simon Callow and various other classic actors for their amazing narrations. I also don’t like acted versions, only narrated versions iyswim - less scope for crappy acting that way.

Also completely adored the Cazalets and the old fashioned posh voice of Jill Balcon.

QuillBill · 15/01/2020 20:46

Thanks Eine, with your extra reassurance I carried on and it,was in the next page!

And thank you@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

Binterested · 15/01/2020 20:46

I always listen to the sample first. There’s quite a few random bad American actors doing British classics and they ruin it with their wrong stresses and weird intonation.

SpeckledyHen · 15/01/2020 20:47

Thanks for the tip OP :)

Fantastic narration of the Simon Serrailler books by Susan Hill .

cheezy · 15/01/2020 20:47

That’s a great tip. I wouldn’t be without audible and get very excited on credit day Blush

Northernsoullover · 15/01/2020 20:51

Whoever posted about returning a book.. thank you! Thank you! I now have a credit..

cheezy · 15/01/2020 20:51

Oh no it didn’t work, an error occurred apparently!

Yadaaday · 15/01/2020 20:55

Thank you!
I recommend Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The narration is beautiful.

Northernsoullover · 15/01/2020 20:57

I have two now. There were two I didn't get on with..

Nigglesmiggle · 15/01/2020 21:01

Ooh just done it thank you!
Yes to returning books too-I return most of mine-allows me to get books for the the children pretty much as often as they want them.
I did feel guilty at first when I discovered it but then thought about amazon and their tax stuff and didn’t feel so bad!

nodtik · 15/01/2020 21:07

Download 'Touching the Void' two phenomenal actors reading the best true to life story of survival ever!

Laughed, cried and grimaced whilst listening. Amazing book even more amazing on Audible xx

tangledyarn · 15/01/2020 21:17

Annoying despite the fact that I've been a 2 book member for 4 years and have over 5 months Blush of listening time..they just let me cancel without offering me any offers. I signed up again Grin

Tessaraqt · 15/01/2020 21:30

Thanks OP! Just did it now and it worked for me. I don't use it at all for me, but my kids listen to an audible every night to fall asleep to after I've read their story. Thrilled to get it cheaper for a few months!

AceOfShades · 15/01/2020 21:37

I love listening to books so much now, I can't read one! It just adds another dimension doesn't it?
It has also cured my insomnia (just about)
It can get quite confusing if you start another book straight away and it has the same narrator Grin
Here's a snap of my library if anyone has similar taste and can recommend me any. There are a few duds in there but on the whole I've enjoyed them.
Standouts being :
The tattooist of auschwitz
Lisa Jewel- all great she's considerably changed from her earlier work
The dream wife. Don't read if you have experienced domestic violence. It's one of the most graphic upsetting reads ever
Cows Dawn O'porter. Very funny.
Loads of others I've really enjoyed. I'll not go on Smile
The Hunting party I returned and got a credit for, not sure why it's still showing in my library but I didn't enjoy it couldn't stand any of the characters so wasn't particularly bothered what happened to them!

AceOfShades · 15/01/2020 21:38

Forgot to add the pic 🤦🏻‍♀️

There's a Dracula with Tim Curry and Alan Cumming but I'm still worried after getting burned by Northern Lights

JamieFrasersSassenach · 15/01/2020 21:47

You can also suspend your membership for up to 3 months as often as you like as long as you have paid a month (so 3 months suspend, one month paid, 3 months suspend etc).
I'm on my second suspension as I've got a few credits saved up so it's pointless to keep paying.

I've been listening to the Outlander books by Diana Gabaldon - there are 8 and I'm on number 8 now. They are quite long - hence the saved up credits. Brilliantly narrated by Davina Porter.

tangledyarn · 15/01/2020 21:48

@aceofshades weve got a lot of the same books. I really enjoy Amanda prouse and chris cleeve and recently really liked queenie :)

Namestranger · 15/01/2020 22:05

I had NO idea you could return them!! I now have 10 credits 🤪

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/01/2020 22:18

It would only let me return one because the others were bought the cheaper way when buying the ebook

But I got rid of dire Lyra Grin

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/01/2020 22:23

I've just attempted "return book" on a book I'd read and it allowed it! Surely they'd only refund a book you hadn't finished?

I really don't know what to do about the second and third Dark materials books. Power through Lyra voice or return and buy the hard copies?

OP posts:
tangledyarn · 15/01/2020 22:25

I think you can return roughly 1 in 4, for whatever reason, of you try to return too many they block it for a while!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 15/01/2020 22:29

I have spent 2 credits and got 2 remaining.

(Whispers)

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz

They seem to be "hallowed turf" on Mumsnet but I didn't think it was all that well written if I'm honest.

I have the other 2 on ebook anyway so eventually I'll power through

Amortentia · 15/01/2020 22:31

The Rivers of London series by BenAaronovitch are really well done. The narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is so good it adds extra to the story.

I personally love Terry Pratchett, some read by Nigel Planer and some are by Stephen Briggs, Witches Abroad is particularly good. BUT, These are old recordings transferred to digital and lots of people don’t like sound quality. I personally use headphones and put up the volume and find once the book begins I don’t notice it.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 15/01/2020 22:42

I use my audible a lot. We listen to lots of children's books on drives. They have some good Great Courses lectures. I most recently loved the Linesman series. And Dorothy Sayers read by Jane McDowell was fun. Simon Vance is a good narrator, I enjoyed his reading of A Tale of Two Cities.
