yes - but money matters too.

I'm writing my dissertation atm (well not right now as I'm on mat leave) and a massive chunk of my lit review is me waffling on about what is more important - economic, social, or cultural capital (I lean towards social capital)

LemonPrism · 15/01/2020 16:51

There's a weird class system but not the old one. There are new sections (new affluent workers, technical middle class, emergent workers) etc.

But the snobbishness is still there

LemonPrism · 15/01/2020 16:53

For example DP is technical middle class and I am a new affluent worker but we both act and have pretty much the same level of education , same values, similar economic background etc

Lardlizard · 15/01/2020 23:15

Reason for asking was I was saying there was still a bit of a class system here although not the same as it was years ago, and dh was saying there’s no class system here in the U.K. anymore .....

Does it matter? People that think they belong to a certain class (usually middle class) usually aren't middle class 😂

Apparently having a degree and a commute makes you middle class according to mumsnet! Money doesn't buy class, as we all know

astrorosa · 15/01/2020 23:20

I'm sorry but if you work then you're working class

Apileofballyhoo · 15/01/2020 23:31

Are the middle class working class so, astro?

TrainspottingWelsh · 15/01/2020 23:43

I don't think it's the same as it was, but it's changed, rather than improved. Now there's a whole new class of wannabes, that appear to believe the essence of being middle class is having money, being pretentious and shunning anything/ anyone they associate with being working class.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/01/2020 23:43

The lower middle classes (teachers/doctors/solicitors) definitely work

Doyoumind · 15/01/2020 23:44

Of course there is.

Deadsouls · 15/01/2020 23:44

Yes I believe so

OddshoesOddsocks · 15/01/2020 23:50

@BillHadersNewWife 9 years ago when pg with dd1 (as a young single mother) I was able to do the NCT course at a hugely discounted rate due to my income (or lack thereof). Not sure if that’s still a thing BUT nowadays I wouldn’t be able to do is as I earn too much to benefit from the scheme but too little to be able to afford it full price. Sod’s law eh! In some ways I was better off a teenage single mum rather than a married, late 20s working one but that’s a different thread!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 16/01/2020 09:59

There has always been people from a working class background who have made money more so since maybe the 60’s

I don’t see them as wannabes they just want the same opportunities for themselves and children as those born into a more privileged life (and not ashamed of it)

Some might be more flashy with their money and probably gives away that they are from new money but so what what are they wanting to be?

People want to be middle class because life holds more opportunities and a better standard of living not because the MC are in anyway better though sadly because of our deeply ingrained class system having a nice accent, having certain names, dressing a certain way, going to particular school does help you get on people have formed an opinion of you and that is not based on intelligence or how you are as a person

ssd · 16/01/2020 10:03

If doctors are lower middle class what is middle class then, or upper middle class? And what's above that?

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 16/01/2020 10:04

Of course there is still a class system.

ANiceLuxury · 16/01/2020 10:27

I ve no idea what makes someone working class, middle class etc

Is it your income?
The house you live in?
What job you have?
How you dress?

Lardlizard · 19/01/2020 18:53

People are very judgey regarding accents
