Yes, clear to see .

Coughy4u · 15/01/2020 05:15

Bill, the antenatal nct classes cost 100s

Iambloodystarving · 15/01/2020 05:17

You have a Queen, Royal Family and an aristocracy.

So, what do ya reckon? Grin

BillHadersNewWife · 15/01/2020 07:04

Coughy there you go then. Horrendous that a "National" org which is surely funded by Government grants is so inaccessible to low income women.

EdithWeston · 15/01/2020 07:24

Yes.

And in all other countries (which we, as foreigners, don't always 'read' well, as they can be atyer different)

DoloresTheDonkey · 15/01/2020 07:37

Yes.

That's the shortest answer I've ever given on here!

Grasspigeons · 15/01/2020 08:19

Is the Queen still head of state? Are their some hereditary peers in Lords? Are there many families in the top 500 wealthy in the country who have been their for approaching 800 years now? Who does own all the land? Is the biggest predictor of educational achievement still your fathers income? Can they look at what position your familiy was in several hundred years ago and make fairly accurate predictions about your wealth now.
Obviously there is movement and change - particularly after the ww2 population shortage which sucked a lot of people up - but its still there.

Camomila · 15/01/2020 10:11

Yes definetely!

Its interesting as a foreigner too to see how the class system is different in the UK and at home.

Usernamealreadyexists · 15/01/2020 12:14

Of course there is is. My son’s private school is a glorious example of how classes don’t mix and how the class system is perpetuated through the arms race that is London schooling. There isn’t a child in his class who doesn’t live in a property worth less than a million or whose parents are in non white-collar professions. It doesn’t fill me with glee that he’s there but I didn’t feel I had any other option.

whiteroseredrose · 15/01/2020 12:48

Yes there is. And I think a lot of people subconsciously work out eachother's social class when they meet. Tiny things can be giveaways. And it's unrelated to someone's current finances.

haverhill · 15/01/2020 12:54

Yes, definitely.
I think other countries have them too, in different forms. We're just more famous for it.

haverhill · 15/01/2020 12:54

infamous

TwilightPeace · 15/01/2020 12:57

Yes just look at the Baby name thread on here.

numberonecook · 15/01/2020 15:03

Very much so especially over the last 10 years where working class people have been very much separate from the middle classes, the line has become clearer.

SallyWD · 15/01/2020 15:25

Yes of course!! You really have to ask?

JoJoSM2 · 15/01/2020 15:30

I'm Spanish and I find the class system in the UK hilarious. Especially when the people don't notice it, it is so obvious for anyone who has grown without a class system!

I’m foreign too. I find the whole thing hilarious but also obnoxious at times.

Camomila · 15/01/2020 15:35

I’m foreign too. I find the whole thing hilarious but also obnoxious at times.

I find it a bit of a minefield sometimes, like if I say 'X' to a friend will it be seen as patronising/snobby because it has a class based connotation in the UK that it doesn't at home.

Pipandmum · 15/01/2020 15:46

Alot of countries do - I've lived in US, France and here and they all have a class system. But I think here in the UK people use 'middle class' as a put down and 'working class' with pride.

EssentialHummus · 15/01/2020 15:52

God yes. I’m foreign. It’s fascinating. But DD was born here and will presumably be subject to all the micro-scrutiny that British people consciously and unconsciously perform on each other and that frightens me a bit - like I no longer have an easy out from the madness.

Someone asked me the other day how many working class friends I have (in the context of a conversation about social mobility). Er, one. Scares me a bit, that kind of silo-ing.

alreadytaken · 15/01/2020 16:07

yes - but money matters too.

JoJoSM2 · 15/01/2020 16:11

I think here in the UK people use 'middle class' as a put down and 'working class' with pride.

I’ve found it the other way round.

MrsZlatan · 15/01/2020 16:18

Someone asked me the other day how many working class friends I have*

Wow Shock

MissingLinker · 15/01/2020 16:18

Yes, we've upheld one but it's a multi layered, incredibly complex thingymabobby (and yes, that is the technical term) which no one can claim to completely understand. It's largely subjective, as seen by the "Am I MC/WC?" threads on here.

So really, we have a CONCEPT of class, which impacts everybody and which no one can completely define. But it's not like the caste system or feudal system.

EssentialHummus · 15/01/2020 16:40

It wasn’t meant offensively I think mrs, they were trying to point out that in spite of my foreign liberal wokeness I’m as hemmed in as the next person. Which I think is true.
