If you have a really comfy sofa, where’s it from?

Dh and I have decided to stop throwing money away on crappy second hand sofas every few years and actually fork out for a really good new one. But we have no idea where to start as pretty much all of our stuff is secondhand.
I think our biggest issue is height difference, dh is 6’5 and I’m 5’7 and dh rarely seems comfortable on sofas. The one we did have that was comfy for him was far too deep in the seat for me and I couldn’t really sit on it, it was a case of curling up which is lovely and cosy but I have a bad back and it’s not the best thing to be doing. Totally expecting that we’re both going to have to compromise, but does anyone have any recommendations?

We have 2 sofas and a chair from loaf.com - amazing! They are so comfortable. One of the sofas is called "pudding" and is a 4 seater, I could spend my whole life on it! DP likes the chair the best, it's called "Gramps", I tell him it's called "Grumps" Grin

Had DFS previously but their corner sofas were too large for our new lounge. Went with Oak Furniture Land. Very impressed with longevity (but maybe that's because DS no longer tried a wrestling falls out on it!)

Heal's. Over a decade old and you wouldn't know.

Natuzzi. Feather filled cushions. So comfy.

BuntyCollocks · 14/01/2020 19:32

Hated our DFS sofa. Our new one is the lounge company and is so comfy. Our previous John Lewis one was amazing.

Sofa Sofa.

DFS - paid a bit more to upgrade to the firmer padding of seat cushions (otherwise they go all baggy and lose their shape). It's so comfy and the seats are deep. I regularly fall asleep on it and wake up the next morning. Got the matching cuddle chair with curved footstool - I fall asleep on that too!

If you're really lucky you can get a DFS sofa in the sale. But hurry - it ends soon 😉🤣🤣

DH is 6'4 and we've just decided to buy this Ikea one, but it seems to be in low stock everywhere. I'll be gutted if they've discontinued it.

We went away last week and they had an Ikea Ektorp in the Airbnb. It's was so, so comfortable. I'd be quite happy with one but DH isn't convinced.

EmmiJay · 14/01/2020 19:53

DFS. Best thing I've ever bought. Its huge and comfortable. Corner suite but once you put the pouffe (?) in the nook, it turns the sofa into a bed basically. Just wonderful!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 14/01/2020 19:59

Interesting to see the Ektorp love here! We have a 3 seater and an armchair that are about 10 years old and getting very uncomfortable. The cushions have just gone saggy and flat and it looks quite scruffy too. Not complaining really, we've had 10 years good use out of them which is pretty good for the price.

NuggetsAhoy · 14/01/2020 20:08

@IToldYouIWasFreaky Call your local ikea, they often have spare cushions available for minimal cost because of returns etc. Ask to be put through to the warehouse.

SwedishEdith · 14/01/2020 20:18

I wish I found the Ektorp comfortable as I'd replace our really disappointing Multiyork one (bought a few years before they went bust). But, I find the Ektorp seat too shallow.

Whatever you do, sit on one how you know you will when you're at home so curled up if that's how you sit. And don't go when you're very tired - everything seems comfortable then.

Muminabun · 14/01/2020 20:18

Another vote for next.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 14/01/2020 20:20

Ah thanks @NuggetsAhoy, good idea! We're going to replace them soon though as they really have seen better days, even with new cushions!

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/01/2020 20:24

Another vote for Sofa Workshop. For custom built furniture, they are very good value for money. We went into the DFS next door and their sofas just didn’t even compare.

BettysLeftTentacle · 14/01/2020 20:26

I’ve always fancied a Loaf one though! Especially a loveseat.

Ariela · 14/01/2020 20:45

We did the visit all the showrooms thing and sat on all of them. DH and I are similar sizes to you OP, and we found the most comfortable ones we all agreed on were fairly high backed . Settled for a Parker Knoll, I think from DFS or Furniture Village (no issues with supply or delivery) we have a 2 seater and 1 seater with recliners, and it is fab. Had it 3 years now and we still enjoy sitting there, it is firm and supportive but still very comfortable. It is quite high so my feet barely touch the floor but plenty of room for DH, and the height makes getting up for old people a lot easier.

Pollaidh · 14/01/2020 20:55

The Ektorp is, as someone else has said, quite shallow. So very tall people might find it isn't deep enough, and I find if you curl up on it, your outer foot falls off the edge, so no good.

It's pretty tough though!

oohnicevase · 14/01/2020 21:00

You need to go and sit on them all , we have dfs sofas and they are very comfy but some in the shop weren't .. but we are all different shapes and sizes so just go and try them .

Junie70 · 14/01/2020 21:08

Get them made by a local upholsterer. You need a hardwood frame, mesh top spring unit and you can't go wrong.

bank100 · 14/01/2020 21:40

Surprised how many are recommending the ikea Ektorp... I have one in my back room and it is not very comfortable at all and doesn't look particularly nice either. (Our DFS sofa is miles better)

DuesToTheDirt · 14/01/2020 21:54

I'm amazed at all you people saying your sofas are still great after 10 years. Only 10 years? Ours is 25 years old and still supremely comfortable. Came from Sterling Furniture in Tillicoultry. No idea if they're still going!

We tried it out thoroughly in the shop and I even had a lie down on it for a while Grin

ICouldHaveBeenAContender · 14/01/2020 21:57

We bought from SCS. I loved that you could get so many options - any cover you wanted, recliner or not, manual or electric recliner (and the limitations on where you put each type of recliner). We must have sat on dozens before deciding! Don't have your height difference, mind, so I suppose it does make things more, ah, frustrating interesting.

Notthebloodygym · 15/01/2020 09:08

I've had dreadful sofas from M and S and DFS. Hopeless in terms of longevity. John Lewis can be good. Sofa workshop is good, but avoid feather unless you have time to bash it around daily. I agree that upholstery made ones are great- I had an old sofa redone by one and it turned out great. My mum has a great one from Alstons. A couple of years ago I would have said Multiyork. Sofology has a terrible reputation. ParkerKnoll and Duresta are good.

I think the best thing to do is to allocate a couple of Saturdays and go and try a few. Consider back height as well as other things.

PerfectPeaches · 15/01/2020 09:13

Ikea stocksund. Sat on it in the shop and wanted one for months after. Eventually bought one of the armchairs second hand as couldn't justify the price of a new one when I didn't need it. Considering replacing sofas with them when I need to.
