Which deodourant for a 7 year old?

DD smells. When she sweats is makes her clothes e.g. coat smell and if she wears her coat again, all her clothes smell too.
I've had to get her to wash at lunchtime before sending her back to school in the afternoon. But I can't wash her coat everyday!
She seemed upset today so I think another child might have said something.

I can't help feeling she's a bit young to be wearing deodorant...but needs must. What is a good one for her age?

I have no experience at all but I would think that a trip to the doctor might be a good idea. Surely it’s not “normal” for a 7 year old to smell and have these issues? Like I said, I don’t know though.

Drabarni · 13/01/2020 16:33

I think daily washing should be enough. The chemicals in deodorant are just unsuitable for children.
Red the ingredients and then look up any you aren't sure of. This will give you your answer.
It won't be puberty at that age, surely.

Has this started suddenly? If so, a trip to the GP might be in order. My DS suddenly developed BO at about the same age. It lasted about a week - then he came down with chicken pox, and once he was over that, the smell vanished as well. We used a PitRock crystal deodorant for him because I thought he was a bit young for full-on antiperspirant.

Ditto PP - I'd check with GP. It could be a sign of premature adolescence.

In the meantime, switch to using soap (rather than shower gel - many on here swear that soap gets you cleaner). I think you want an anti-perspirant (rather than deodorant) but either way one unperfumed and for sensitive skin.

TrickyBook · 13/01/2020 17:13

I first noticed it at the beginning of last summer. On hot days when she did loads of sport it was very noticeable.
I've been making sure she wears only cotton clothes for sport now, but now it's cold outdoors it's fleeces and thick coats which are polyester and problematic.
Took her to GP in October - not worried as no other signs of puberty apart from some hair growth but 7 is considered within the normal range for that. Said to hold off with deodorant and just make sure she washes properly, which she does.
It definitely seems linked with lots of sport as on the days she doesn't do a lot, it's not noticeable.

It always surprises me when there’s this fuss about children smelling. Mine just used a normal roll on deodorant.

spiderlight · 13/01/2020 17:55

I'd start with a good wash with soap every morning and evening and a crystal deodorant and see if that does the trick.

dementedpixie · 13/01/2020 17:58

I'd use an antiperspirant tbh. I wouldn't want to be the smelly child at school

InglouriousBasterd · 13/01/2020 18:04

DD started having smelly days at this age. She just uses dove or Vaseline deodorant.

morrisseysquif · 13/01/2020 18:05

I would use one of those crystal deodrants , no chemicals.

7 seems quite early so I would get her checked by the GP too.

dementedpixie · 13/01/2020 18:06

OP has already seen the GP. I'm sure all types of deodorants contain chemicals btw

Swife · 13/01/2020 18:18

@TrickyBook since she is so young and you don't want a lot of chemicals in her system. Try Tom's All Natural Deodorants or Arm & Hammer All Natural. Neither of them have parabens or aluminum or other harmful chemicals. Hope this helps

Swife · 13/01/2020 18:20

@TrickyBook or Native. You can get it online at Amazon or EBay. I'm live in the US so I can also get it from Walmart(not sure if you have this)

CreekIsRising · 13/01/2020 18:26

As per a pp, all deodorants and anti perspirants are developed to be safe for both children and adults, otherwise they would be age restricted products. Just do a patch test firat, regardless of whether natural or not.

mummaaw · 13/01/2020 18:29

I would get her a deodorant

CreekIsRising · 13/01/2020 18:31

Not that there is actually a chemical distinction between natural and non natural, but y'know, marketing, it's the language they use.

june2007 · 13/01/2020 18:32

They don,t need it.

Iggity · 13/01/2020 18:34

On my nearly 11 yr old, I use Pitstop by Scrubbingtons. It’s just deodorant rather than an antiperspirant.

Ruraldream · 13/01/2020 18:38

My dd has BO too. Ds doesn't. Gp said as long as there's no other signs of puberty, it's fine. We've just bought the Rock Chick one.

Which deodourant for a 7 year old?
nevernotstruggling · 13/01/2020 18:40

@june2007 clearly they do.

If this happens with my dds I'm getting anti perspirants they are not being singled out at school because they smell. No bloody way!

user1493494961 · 13/01/2020 19:09

I've known 7 year olds who smell of BO with no early puberty issues. I would get her a deodorant suitable for children.

glorioussilence · 13/01/2020 19:29

Which is most deodorants.

Soap is far harsher on the skin than deodorant.

redeyetonowheregood · 13/01/2020 21:10

My daughter was like this. When she was that young I got her a Neil's yard deo. I had to remind her a lot to use it.

She started her periods the month she turned 10, same age as me. She now uses an antiperspirant. She has always had access to my perfumes but I started buying her body shop perfumes for birthdays or Christmas at around 7 so she had her own.

BrightonBB · 13/01/2020 21:17

My DD was exactly the same at that age. Dr Organics deodorant from Holland & Barrett seems to do the trick. One swipe each morning.

AuditAngel · 13/01/2020 21:56

My DD2 is sometimes like this. She is 9 at the moment, but was an issue the summer she was 7. No other signs of puberty, in fact she has more issues than DS(15) and DD1 (12), she’s just a stinker.

Soap to wash pits morning and night, she uses whatever antiperspirant i have (usually Sanex). She doesn’t like deodorant as she still feels sweaty.
