Sainsbury's online food shop - what happens

June705 · 13/01/2020 08:06

Hi all,

I've ordered a Sainsbury's online food shop for delivery today. What happens at the point of delivery? I assume the items won't come bagged (I wasn't given this option). Will the delivery driver bring the crates inside? Or should I pop DS in his jumperoo and take my own bags to pack the items from the crates in my porch? I've got a 6 month old DS and don't particularly want a stranger in my home if it's just me and him.

What does everyone else do?

Sorry if this is the a really stupid post.

Thanks

Driver brings crate to door, you carry to kitchen and unload it onto the work surface, swop for the next full one!

Pascha · 13/01/2020 08:08

I always get the crates carried into the kitchen but it's only a few steps from the front door so no ones ever said no. I would ask and see. I would be inclined to use the jumperoo anyway though so you can unpack everything quickly.

xmaself24 · 13/01/2020 08:11

Mine puts the crates at the front door. I take out the items and put them in the floor by the front door, then after he's gone I take them to the kitchen.

Driver brings crate to door

This. It's a moronic setup imo - fruit comes in individual plastic bags, ditto veg, fresh meat and frozen meat. Last time I ended up with nine plastic bags - more than if they'd bagged the stuff in the usual way.

Mine always brings it into the kitchen - I just say ‘do you mind bringing it through?’ And off we go. Unload directly into the worktop x

P.s sainsburys do offer a service to the kitchen so nobody has ever said no!

DesLynamsMoustache · 13/01/2020 08:17

I just have bags for life by the door and decant everything from the crates into them on doorstep and then carry the bags through to kitchen and unload them in my own time.

NekoShiro · 13/01/2020 08:17

Mine get left at the front door and I take my plastic bag full of plastic bags down with me and load up in the door way and then after they've left I carry them to my kitchen

He or she will ask you where you want the shopping left, but if you've ordered a bagless delivery it'd be much easier to have the crates brought to your kitchen to unpack. I'm pretty sure the driver will have been vetted by Sainsbury's and he or she will just be keen to get onto their next delivery.

Beasmamma · 13/01/2020 08:35

Mine always brings it into the kitchen too and then either leave it on the floor or hold it up so I can unload onto the worktop. Sometimes they help put things on the worktop too. I then put it all away after they have gone.

wingingitalltheway · 13/01/2020 08:47

I put bags near the door and take it from them there. I would not feel comfortable with someone coming into my home when I’m alone with my baby either!
She is 12 weeks and I just put her in her Moses basket.

WooMaWang · 13/01/2020 08:56

Every single Sainsbury's driver I've ever encountered has asked me where I want the shopping and brought them through to the kitchen. They always help me to unload the crates on to the worktops too. Generally I find all the drivers I get to be really helpful and friendly.

Those of you who are scared of a stranger in your home, what do you do if you need a plumber, or someone comes to check your meter?? I can't get my head around not letting a scheduled delivery driver into your kitchen! Their van is right outside and everyone knows where they are. I cannot see a risk. Very paranoid.

OP, I have had delivery from Sainsbury's, Tesco and Asda and all the drivers have asked where I would like my shopping, sometimes I have said just in the hall and other times through to the kitchen depending on how much there is. No one has ever had a problem. You will need to out your DS somewhere safe any way so you can unload it and sign for it etc.

whatnow40 · 13/01/2020 09:35

I have a little cart I use for moving work things around, it saves my bad back. I leave this by the door and unload everything in to it, then roll on in to the kitchen. I don't want the driver coming in because then I'd have to tidy up for him!! Grin

whatnow40 · 13/01/2020 09:35

Sorry, this is the cart I use.

I decant at the door into plastic laundry baskets or boxes. So much easier than packing into multiple bags.

sueelleker · 13/01/2020 10:12

Sainsbury have switched to bagless now-I usually unpack into the hallway, but using bags for life is a good idea. I used to return the plastic carrier bags with the next delivery.

Spoonsmum · 13/01/2020 10:17

The driver puts crates outside my door, I grab armfuls of stuff and fling them behind me into the hallway. Toddler tries to “help” so I fin her off with the cereal. Then after the guy is gone I pick it all up and put it away. Both me and my driver always seem to be ina massive rush (such is life) so I just try and make it as quick for them as possible. Plus I feel bad because I live up four flights of stairs so I show my gratitude by being the quickest customer ever :)

bellinisurge · 13/01/2020 10:22

Driver brings stuff to the door. I pull out the bits and put them in the hall (or in a plastic box in the hall if I can be arsed to remember it). I sign the thing (no idea what it's called) and thank him/her and close the door.
I then pack it away.

June705 · 13/01/2020 10:24

Thanks everyone.

I think I'll go with unloading the shopping from the crates into big bags for life in our porch.

I agree it's probably a little overly cautious not to want a scheduled delivery driver coming into our home when it's just me and DS but I work with really dangerous people and whilst there take measures to maintain my safety. I think I've probably transferred some of the same mentality into my home life!

I carry the crates into the kitchen and unload them on the table then take the empty ones back to the front door.

Runnerduck34 · 13/01/2020 14:53

Since they've stopped using carrier bags I ask for them to carry crates to the kitchen so I can unpack. Drivers have been happy to do this so far, talking to them they say no bags is a pita and has increased time it takes to deliver which has not been reflected in their schedules . Apparently the official line is customers will be waiting at the door with their own bags to pack the crated groceries into then carry the bags to kitchen unpack and repeat, depending on how much shopping /how many bags you have. We are a family of 6 plus pets so my weekly shop contains over 100 items. Honestly I now just try and order it when my husband is wah so I don't have to deal with it 🤣

Fredastaireatemyjamsandwich · 13/01/2020 15:37

Ocado deliver in bags, but take them (and any other plastic bags) for recycling. Otherwise get a few blue Ikea bags and use them.

Clearly never been attacked by a strange man

Wash baskets are good.
