Being horribly judgemental (baby name related)

namechange201020 · 12/01/2020 22:51

Someone I know has had a beautiful baby boy. The name she has given him is a bit odd.

I know it's not my place to have an opinion but I can't help but think this poor boy will be made fun of as he grows up. I've name changed as I don't know for sure she's not on here and I don't want her to find the rest of my posts if she is. I know of no other children with this name. She's from a similar socioeconomic background as me.
She's called him Cloud. I can't even think of a nickname he could go by.

I work in a primary school.

Initially we think “oh that’s a bit....”

And with a day it’s just the name and we forget it would be considered usual.

That’s the staff and the kids.

Very quickly it’s just “their name” and it’s not even noticed

Stravapalava · 12/01/2020 22:57

Are you sure it's not Claude?

namechange201020 · 12/01/2020 22:58

@Stravapalava definitely Cloud complete with emoji.

Foggy?

EgremontRusset · 12/01/2020 22:59

That’s kind of fine. It’s not long or hard to spell or pronounce. It doesn’t mean something offensive, inappropriate or pretentious. Quite like it.

namechange201020 · 12/01/2020 23:03

@EgremontRusset true, my DS is 7 weeks, his name is traditional but will probably be misspelled. I'm just thinking of when I was at school. Kids can be mean.

leghairdontcare · 12/01/2020 23:04

I've definitely heard worse than Cloud. Is she a middle class hippy type?

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 12/01/2020 23:06

Hopefully short for my all time favourite historical name
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloudesley_Shovell
Probably good that I only had daughters...

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 12/01/2020 23:07

Kids can be mean. But it’s also just his name.

They can be mean about Oliver and Finlay and David just as much as they will be mean about Cloud, Shade and River

DramaAlpaca · 12/01/2020 23:07

It's a whole lot better than the ubiquitous, cutesy Alfie, Archie types of name that are around these days.

I don't mind it.

MrBobLobLaw · 12/01/2020 23:08

Ok people obviously there's worse names out there's.. but Cloud?!? CLOUD! C'mon that's pretty shit.

Cloud. Cloud... I just can't get myself to like it as a name at all. I'm just envisioning all the people faux complimenting the mum. "Oh wow so unique!"

Congrats on your baby OP. Currently snuggling my 8wo too.

MrBobLobLaw · 12/01/2020 23:09

*there not there's apologies

BrokenWing · 12/01/2020 23:09

It's not a very cheery positive name is it? Nature names like summer, autumn, sky, Dawn conjure up positive images. Cloud straight away you think if something dull, unwelcome, a prelude to wet weather. Don't like it.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 12/01/2020 23:11

I’ve known kids teased for a trillion reasons but I genuinely can’t think of one ever being their name.

My DD3 is called Tess. Her friend is called Jess. We have a brilliant song about tess and Jess. Her other 2 best friends are from Persia and Pakistan so their names are at their names

Zolaaaaa · 12/01/2020 23:11

I know a woman called Cloud, to be honest I just think of it as her name. I don’t think it’s ever been an issue for her

BaronessBomburst · 12/01/2020 23:11

One of my neighbours has recently had a baby named Moon. I don't know if it's a boy or girl but the garden had been decorated with flags and storks and a big sign saying "Moon". Confused

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 12/01/2020 23:12

definitely Cloud complete with emoji.

What? There is an emoji in his name?

FramingDevice · 12/01/2020 23:12

I don’t mind it either. I know teenagers called Storm, Buzz, Ace, Cornelius,, Gandalf, and Tuesday, and none of them seem to have had their lives wrecked.

namechange201020 · 12/01/2020 23:18

@leghairdontcare nope, working class but a bit out there, works in a creative field but works bloody hard.

@MrBobLobLaw that's all over her Facebook post.

@BrokenWing I thought it sounded a bit sad, especially with a January birthday.

@WireBrushAndDettolMaam sorry no wasn't clear enough, the obligatory Facebook announcement came with an emoji so we knew she meant Cloud I imagine.

I think it is a bit judgmental of you. When I hear kids being given really ordinary names (i.e. in the top 20 kids names) I fear that they may grow up feeling that they have to conform and be the same as others, which is often a path to poorer well being. I think it's a shame that they're not given any real individuality. There are pros and cons of ordinary versus creative names, If people make fun of him for his name that will help him know is self-centered and should be avoided - not a bad thing to identify early on!

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 12/01/2020 23:37

I quite like itBlush

namechange201020 · 12/01/2020 23:41

@73Sunglasslover yes I know it's judgemental. That's why I've titled the thread as I have. I just hope things have moved on from when I lived where she lives now. I had a horrible time at school in that area.

OP posts:
PickwickThePlockingDodo · 12/01/2020 23:45

I like it too ☁️
It's very similar to Claude and just think Claudia can be pronounced Claw-dier or Cloud- ier and no one bats an eyelid 🤷‍♀️

ContessaferJones · 12/01/2020 23:45

I would find that a bit weird too op.

Also: I’ve known kids teased for a trillion reasons but I genuinely can’t think of one ever being their name. - really? Names were a major focus for taking the piss when I was at school!!

thistimelastweek · 12/01/2020 23:46

@73Sunglasslover. Like a boy called Sue?
Have you ever met a real kid?
