Hi everyone , I’m really needing help , my 15mth2week little boy has seem to have a habit of getting his legs stuck in the cot bars and when I mean stuck he screams the house down in pain! I don’t NOT think he’s ready for bars off at the moment he’s Literally everywhere he gets into everything I just cannot imagine him been in the bedroom alone even if I have baby gates he’s not a very good sleep either he literally goes to sleep at 7 and wakes up around 9 and is up till 12am! I cannot imagine him running around the room at that time all my children have bedtimes and he does not go to sleep for ages either! I’m stuck in a rut as I do not like bumpers I have anxiety and I worry about everything! Any suggestions? Thankyou!

what about individual bumpers you can get ones that go round each bar so they cant get tangled in them .May make it harder for him to get stuck.

But to be honest i went through this to and its going to happen now or later ,when you move them up a bed.I moved my daughter to a toddler bed and i had to baby proof everything in her room.

Sleeping/gro bag

Rainallnight · 12/01/2020 21:38

Is he in a gro-bag? That usually stops this problem.

We used a mesh strip that tied around the bars. It’s effectively like a bumper but because it’s made of mesh it’s breathable.

My DS used to get his arm stuck between his cot and the wall and it was the only thing that helped

I was super paranoid due to the safe sleeping guidelines when I first used it but I put my face as close to it’s as I could physically get and could still breathe so that gave me some comfort

Gro-bag/sleeping bag. My 19 month old flips herself all over the place, but she is safe in her bag.

GlitteryFluff · 12/01/2020 21:45

We used these and before we found these a gro- bag. These stopped dummies falling down the back of the cot too.

Hi guys , I have tried the bag he gets so angry as he has a toddler quilt due to he never slept at all through the night before he has a toddler quilt then my HV recommended it after 1years and he started sleeping now he’s back to same old ! I’ll try the bag again see how he goes he just gets so frustrated becuase he’s up and done that cot when he sleeps it’s unreal!

@rosydreams hey , I totally understand my daughter turned 2 went straight into a single bed missed the toddler bed out and she was brilliant still is but she’s really chilled out my son is so hyper he has no routine as much as I try I still put him to bed at 7 with a bottle of milk like my other kids but he just seems to rip his bedding off bounce all over the cot that my neighbours hear him! I darnt put him Ina. Bed till he understands he needs to stay in bed as he’s struggling to talk aswell atm! My daughter could talk full sentences and count to 10 at his age she new what to do when I said it he’s Doesnt understand as much yet which is fine he will get there he’s just a cuddly boy but very hyper !😂

@GlitteryFluff OMG thank you I might try them! He has his face literally stuck to the bars most nights that’s only why bumpers scare me but the dummy situation Jesus I found 6 today down the side of his cot!

Duckyneedsaclean · 12/01/2020 21:58

Yes to mesh cot bumpers!

Oceanrae · 12/01/2020 22:01

I’m going to try them because I really don’t want my son in a bed yet I no he’s way too young thank you Hun for the advice

I dunno, some kids just hate cots. When my ds was about 4 and hadn't been in a cot since he was about 14 months said to me, do you remember you used to put me in baby jail? I was stumped until I realised he meant his cot! We took him out of the cot because he hated it so much! He was much better in a bed because he was happier. I'd try it.

Russell19 · 12/01/2020 22:10

I really don't want to scare you and I'm not at all trying to worry you but just remember the mesh bumpers are still a risk. Bumpers aren't just a risk because of babies putting their face against them, they're a risk in case the ties get caught on them or their head gets stuck underneath.

skankingpiglet · 12/01/2020 22:29

I know it's not what you want to hear, but I'm in the 'take the bars off' camp too. It's worth a go. I wouldn't risk any kind of bumper.

On the sleep front, does he still nap? If yes, perhaps it's time to drop/shorten it to improve his night time sleep.

YikesFeelSoStressed · 12/01/2020 22:46

Grobag?

CatFaceCats · 12/01/2020 23:28

Is there such a thing as a zipped on duvets? Sort of a massive grobag? I might be imagining it though! Then he might not feel so constricted!

rosydreams · 13/01/2020 07:41

yeah my daughter had speech delay and was not potty trained till 4.I had to put on back to front zipped up sleepsuits on her, to prevent her ripping off her nappy when she was running around her room.It was either a toddler bed or her doing something silly.

I closed her door let her dance around her room but she grew out on it

GlitteryFluff · 13/01/2020 07:59

There's no ties on the mesh wraps just FYI.

Oceanrae · 13/01/2020 08:47

@Russell19 & @skankingpiglet I do feel the same about bumpers I’m super paranoid when it comes to my kids I never wanted to try that either but I’m also super scared about the normal bed due to how he is he pulls my curtains down he climbs absolutely everywhere I just think he could run around my bedroom for as long as he can he will not go to sleep I already have to wait till about 12 till he goes to sleep now I cannot imagine waiting longer when I have school run I’m shattered by 7am 😭

You could buy a travel cot and then get a proper mattress for it (easy to find on Amazon)
Thats what DS had when he outgrew his crib but was still in our room.
(But then he learnt to climb out so had to go in a toddler bed)

Oceanrae · 13/01/2020 14:32

@Camomila I’m thinking about the travel cot to be honest it sounds like a great idea! How long before you had to put your boy in a toddler bed?

OP posts:
Camomila · 13/01/2020 14:38

Around 18-20 months, with a soft guard rail on one side. We had the toddler bed in our room so I was less worried about him wondering about (tbh half the time he just climbed in with us).

Oceanrae · 13/01/2020 16:04

@Camomila yes my sons in my room too but we don’t go to bed with him at the same time so I no he will be out the bed and wondering around the room

Livvylooboo · 13/01/2020 20:02

We used a travel cot with mattress until DS was regularly climbing out.
Grobag do a duvet zipped to a fitted sheet that might be good although I haven't tried it
