Just got electrocuted

I was trying to take a lampshade off a ceiling light and it wouldn't come off and as I was twisting it I must have touched something I don't know but I got a bit electrocuted... My hand is still a bit tingly and it really scared me! This has never happened to me before, do I have to do anything now? Will it affect my body? Do I have to see a doctor? I've left the lampshade as it is for now. I just wanted to unscrew it to clean it, it's glass and absolutely filthy!!

I think you will be ok. However I would seriously be getting an electrician asap.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/01/2020 21:22

I think you'll be fine.

Did you switch the light off at the wall before you removed the bulb? If not, make sure you do that from now on. If you did....well you may need an electrician at some point as there shouldn't be any power to it if the light switch was off.

dudsville · 11/01/2020 21:23

Turn the lamp off at the wall socket.

Oh I've no idea but hope you are ok.

januhairy · 11/01/2020 21:24

I’ve been zapped by a fridge and an electric fence, was fine both times - don’t recommend it , painful! , but think you’ll be fine . Would second getting an electrician though if the light was off at the wall .

dudsville · 11/01/2020 21:24

I mean now, not in future, lamp might be faulty.

Cheeseboardcriminal · 11/01/2020 21:25

I have done that before OP, removed a bulb without turning it off at the wall and managed to stick my finger in the hole.

Was left shook up but no lasting damage I am pleased to say.

slipperywhensparticus · 11/01/2020 21:25

Ooh it makes you feel uneasy getting shocked 💐

MilkTray22 · 11/01/2020 21:25

No I didn't switch it off which I realise now is stupid. I have had a few drinks tonight as well so it probably wasn't the wisest idea Blush I just wanted to remove the shade, I didn't want to remove the bulb.

If you've been electrocuted you should probably have an ECG as it can affect the rhythm of your heart.

Sn0tnose · 11/01/2020 21:34

How were you planning on taking the shade off without removing the bulb?

Jayaywhynot · 11/01/2020 21:54

Ahh you'll be fine, iv done before, its just a shock Flowers

Horsemad · 11/01/2020 22:59

ECG could be a good idea.

ChocChipWookie · 12/01/2020 00:14

You'll be fine. I blew myself across the landing once changing a live fuse (I needed to isolate it, who knew?!)
I was a bit tingly as well and felt a bit stupid but it passed.

That said if anything changes and you feel short of breath etc seek some help.

OldTownRoadHome · 12/01/2020 00:21

I electrocuted myself at a mains plug, twice, I reqlly should put the bag of the plug on my blow dryer...

You’ll be fine, you don’t need any medical help unless you have any other symptoms surely!

OldTownRoadHome · 12/01/2020 00:22

I’d be more concerned if your trip switch didn’t knock the lights out? Mine did, and the hotel I did it in the second time Blush

Get an electrician to check if not!

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 00:25

You didn't turn it off ?! Oops. You should speak to the doctors out of hours service to ask what to do I think, it's shocking that people rely on randoms online for medical advice,,,

AvaSnowdrop · 12/01/2020 00:35

If you’d been electrocuted (executed by electricity) you wouldn’t be posting here? So presumably you just got an electric shock. You’ll be fine, the pain (if there is any) will go after a day or two.

PigletJohn · 12/01/2020 00:39

Light fitings can be live even when they have been turned off at the switch. The ceiling rose (almost) always is, so it is best to turn off the electricity at the consumer unit (fusebox) first.

But much better advice is to stay away from both electricity and stepladders after drinking.

PigletJohn · 12/01/2020 00:41

Also, look up "survivor bias"

Clymene · 12/01/2020 00:45

You got an electric shock. You didn't get a bit electrocuted. Hmm

That's like saying you had a bit of a heart attack when you were surprised.

Get an electrician

PawPawNoodle · 12/01/2020 00:50

Hows the afterlife OP?

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 05:23

I don't think the op likes the after life but she's got to socket and see.

MitziK · 12/01/2020 06:23

You might have a burn - even if it's only a small one or doesn't hurt, get it checked out, as it could still be quite unpleasant if left untreated, as it's gone through the tissues of your hand/fingers and possibly gone through some nerves. It is an A&E job, but not a 999 one.

Other than that, you know you've been bloody stupid.

Ouchaheadinmybehind · 12/01/2020 06:52

I once plugged in a plug that had a broken back so my hand was touching the the inside. It gave me an electric shock.
The pain made me scream so loudly people came running.
I was fine.
