Just got electrocuted

I was trying to take a lampshade off a ceiling light and it wouldn't come off and as I was twisting it I must have touched something I don't know but I got a bit electrocuted... My hand is still a bit tingly and it really scared me! This has never happened to me before, do I have to do anything now? Will it affect my body? Do I have to see a doctor? I've left the lampshade as it is for now. I just wanted to unscrew it to clean it, it's glass and absolutely filthy!!

I think you mean you had an electric shock ... surely if you are electrocuted you are dead 😬

SayitBeit · 12/01/2020 07:00

I don't know but I got a bit electrocuted...

I know this is serious but it did make me laugh a lot smile Smile

Surely if you’re that much of a pedant, it must have killed you by now? No wait, I mean electrocuted. Hope you’re ok OP, hopefully you don’t need A&E and if you do they’re less patronising.

I did the same thing when I was pregnant. Had an ecg because of the pregnancy but was told it would be fine and it was

MarieG10 · 12/01/2020 07:41

For a ceiling light, turning off electric at the wall switch won't necessarily cut off the electric. You need to switch off at the main consumer unit.

I suggest you get an electrician though or someone who understands electrical light fittings as there is definitely an issue

user1492771818 · 12/01/2020 10:37

The switch should always turn off the electricity to the bulb socket(in the UK at least). If it doesn't it's not been installed to regulations or seriously faulty.

lljkk · 12/01/2020 10:49

Meh, DH has done this a few times (degree in electrical engineering). Bit of a rest, cup of tea, right as rain.

2MapleMuffins · 12/01/2020 11:31

I got thrown across a room touchung a live moveable radiator once. The pain was unbelievable.

We told our landlady and her response was to ask if I had put on the rubber gloves she had helpfully placed next to the said radiator before touching it. Apparently she had mentioned it to DH (she had not).

Anyway, i got checked out at the hospital and i recommend it. We also informed the council and they sent someone to inspect it.

BlouseAndSkirt · 12/01/2020 11:52

I electrocuted myself at a mains plug, twice, I reqlly should put the bag of the plug on my blow dryer

Have you had kids yet?
Am thinking of the gene pool.
But if you have kids in the house best not to leave them motherless, or put them at risk if they play hairdresser, or whatever.

LittleScottish · 12/01/2020 13:12

ECG! Grin

Nothing like an MN overreaction! Lolz

LittleScottish · 12/01/2020 13:14

Please don't go for an ECG, BTW. It's HIGHLY unlikely you require one, and the NHS is already on its knees!

Yes but the live circuit is in the ceiling Rose. The switched circuit is taken from there so will always be live

lostsoulsunited · 12/01/2020 20:22

Am thinking of the gene pool.

I'd be concerned that anybody leaving the back off a plug was out of their depth in the shallow end of the gene pool.

FarTooSkinny · 12/01/2020 20:49

You are doing well posting on MN if you were electrocuted

Maybe you received an electric shock?

Hoik · 12/01/2020 20:55

Unless the shock was very minor then you should always seek medical advice afterwards, and that's NHS advice.

CharlotteMD · 12/01/2020 22:07

You mean you had an electric shock.

years ago i was about 13 i think i plugged in our radiogram and the plugs were the old black bakelite ones and it for want of a better word exploded. it threw me across the room and set fire to the carpet. i was shaken up but ok a neighbour heard the commotion and took me to hers for a while the carpet fire was soon put out with a heavy stamping on it was only a nylon carpet so melted!

Nat6999 · 13/01/2020 18:09

My ex husband got a shock off a pole in our caravan awning during a tornado, he had a heart attack the day after but I was told that the shock had nothing to do with it. It was a massive crack & flash, the tornado took out all the electrics for a 10 mile radius & there were power surges & all kinds of wierd things happened.

PigletJohn · 13/01/2020 18:36

Electricians were advised not long ago to attend A&E after a shock, because a study found that the number of heart attacks increased in the following day or two. I believe there were H&S management bulletins about it.

But the last I heard was that it didn't actually help. I don't know if there is anything a hospital can do to stop you having one tomorrow if you have a shock today

MilkTray22 · 13/01/2020 19:12

@PolPotNoodle the afterlife is okay thanks, I can't complain too much. Its a little cold and dark here though, I think I may need a holiday soon. Maybe if I had managed to clean my light and I hadn't electrocuted myself then I wouldn't now be left in the dark, as it were! There's also a tall man in a black cloak who wanders around a lot, he carries a scythe too, I'm not sure why. There's not a lot to do here but if I find a shop that sells postcards I'll try and send out a few. All the best!
