Anne Sacoolas: Extradition notice sent to US for diplomat's wife over Harry Dunn death news.sky.com/story/anne-sacoolas-extradition-notice-sent-to-us-for-diplomats-wife-over-harry-dunn-death-11905753

Apologies if the link doesn't work, I've never tried one before.

I'm wondering what others' opinions are about whether she will actually get what's coming to her? She disgusts me, to be honest. The circumstances are clear-cut that she was at fault and she's just run away from the whole thing! I'm very curious as to whether the US will grant the extradition notice. Gut feeling says no.

What does everyone else think??

Also diplomatic immunity was put in to stop dodgy countries putting people away they didn't like on iffy charges, that sort of thing. In practice there have been loads of awful stuff done.

Ask Yvonne Fletchers family - I'm sure they have a tale to tell.

I seem to remember a story about a man who kidnapped a woman held her for months, got her pregnant, she escaped at about 8 months pregnant or something, they couldn't touch him.

I imagine that was proper Vienna Convention diplomatic immunity - like the Libyans mentioned previously had. We had to see UK policemen escorting them to freedom.

Quite what this homebrew "immunity" covers and excludes is another matter. As I keep banging on - what the holy fuck is in that treaty that allows a UK citizen to be left dead with no justice ? And (much more importantly) could it happen again ?????

This guy was extradited from the US - I remember the case as it was local to me. The article states he was only the third person ever to be extradited from the US for murder. So it is rare and funnily enough, he’s black Hmm

Maybe, maybe not. I think on MN it’s easy for people to call her a coward and say she should face the music.

It being easy for people to call her a coward on MN is kind of the point, no? It's fine for you to think the criticism is illegitimate, but what's being said here is that it's a pretty inevitable consequence of her actions. Which it is.

PegasusReturns · 11/01/2020 19:30

It being easy for people to call her a coward on MN is kind of the point, no?

I disagree. The point is that in RL most people won’t think her a coward, they’ll recognise they’d have likely done the same.

She certainly won’t be friendless or cast out. I suspect her family and friends will be rallying round, supporting her and protecting her from criticism. I’d guarantee they’re not suggesting she returns to a foreign country to face the music.

PegasusReturns · 11/01/2020 19:31

Or to clarify further most people that know her or meet her in RL won’t think her a coward

PineapplePower · 11/01/2020 19:41

Surely she has none or few friends in the US now they know what she's done

She’d never have been jailed in the U.S. as it was clearly an accident. You typically don’t get a jail sentence unless you were drunk or high or speeding recklessly. In the U.K. it’s very, very different. I believe an old man died in jail for a car accident; he’d never even have been arrested in the U.S.

The US would also have had a better ambulance service too!! He waited much too long for an ambulance and apparently she waited with him with her kid the whole time.

But no way was she going to go to jail for something that would have, at worst, resulted in a suspended license in her home country. You’d be a fool to do so.

CameronG · 11/01/2020 19:49

It’s awful for his family but it won’t bring him back.

She has three children. It was a terrible accident. I’d do anything I possibly could to avoid jail and stay with my children. It would be near impossible to live with but I’d be putting them first.

FrogsFrogs · 11/01/2020 20:03

I wonder would people feel the same about a motorist who killed a teenager going on the run in the UK.

I think not.

BoxedWine · 11/01/2020 20:07

I disagree. The point is that in RL most people won’t think her a coward, they’ll recognise they’d have likely done the same.

No, that's not the point. The point is that she is inevitably going to face criticism because of what she's done, which she has and is. This is a fact. Of course it's not likely to come from her family and friends, but then that wasn't what was argued.

As for most people generally, doubt it. I've heard nobody IRL speak in her favour, though I guess either of our circles could be unrepresentative, and I think you're being quite optimistic to think people generally put themselves into the position of others before criticising. Though I personally have, but it didn't change anything. However appallingly you, I or anyone else might behave in a particular set of circumstances, that wouldn't mean it's the right thing to do or that others don't have the right to criticise.

FrogsFrogs · 11/01/2020 21:54

Wouldn't most people prefer to get away with a crime if they could?

And generally people say no, that's not how it works.

Why is this case different.

PegasusReturns · 12/01/2020 01:48

boxedwine I’m sure you’re right that my circle is unrepresentative.

I’ve represented a number of individuals charged with causing death by dangerous/careless driving. Without exception their “communities” were hugely sympathetic. In particular those that had lead otherwise blameless lives were often seen as victims themselves and generated a huge amount of sympathy.

So I think it’s naive to assume most people think badly of her.

I also think it’s dishonest to call her a coward when those that are doing so would behave exactly as she has in the same circumstances.

CharlotteMD · 12/01/2020 02:22

Won't happen, sadly. The Americans will come up with something.

OrangeLindt · 12/01/2020 04:05

I am confident she will, Radd is doing an amazing job, and my heart breaks for Harry's family.

OrangeLindt · 12/01/2020 04:10

@AgnusandMagnus be quiet you insensitive twit

BoxedWine · 12/01/2020 08:52

I don't know whose circle is more representative Pegasus, but the fact that some people who've caused death by dangerous driving gain lots of sympathy doesn't tell us anything about any other specific case. It doesn't even tell us that those individuals don't also face substantial criticism too.

Re the dishonesty, by all means disagree with people doing it but this is a separate issue from whether her actions have inevitably led to it happening. Which they very clearly have.
