How do you take the top of your soft boiled eggs

After being with DH for 13 years weve this morning noticed that we take the top off our dippy eggs differently.

How do you do yours?

I hit the top with the back of a teaspoon so it's all smashed then scoop the top off with the spoon

DH hits his with a sharp knife to make a tiny slit and then saws through the (unsmashed) shell.

Yes you can eat it, because the smashed bit is all stuck together with the membrade inside the shell anyway. So you can scoop out the bit of egg white and eat it.

I tap tap tap around the circumference with my knife then use the spoon to behead the egg and scoop out the white from the beheaded section before dipping my soldiers.

I have been known to use boiled eggs as poached egg substitutes and use the spoon to encourage the boiled egg out onto my slice of toast. If done properly the yolk will be intact for you to spread over your toast.

Only weird people DON'T turn it upside down and smash it, afterwards.

I was shown this. And then did it my Dad, every single time, my whole childhood.
I offered him 2 boiled eggs. And he feigned surprise to discover 2 empty eggs. Which thrilled me! Every time!

It's an essential part of life isn't it?

Ds2 does it to me. I feign surprise. He loves it!

Assumed this was a given.
Doesn't every family do this?

Absolutely we did, what laughs 😁

ShinyGiratina · 11/01/2020 12:52

Smash my spoon through to lift the top off, similar to the knife method.
Tapping and smashing takes ages and gets shards of shell everywhere.

Definitely poke a hole through the bottom at the end
a) so the witches don't take it out to sea
b) so the egg shell doesnt seal into the egg cup and be tricky to remove.

Likethebattle · 11/01/2020 13:50

Slice it off with a knife and to a p no they don’t keep cooking as you slice both off before you eat.

TurduckenFucken · 11/01/2020 13:57

I tap the top and peel the shell off that bit. Because I’m not some kind of savage.

Cracking and slicing indeed.

Davros · 11/01/2020 14:02

I believe in some other countries they only eat hard boiled eggs fully peeled, possibly Germany or USA? No sweet, sweet runny yolk and soldiers. Heathens

drivingtofrance · 11/01/2020 16:28

Update on my post gym boiled eggs.

I found the egg cups. Eggs 🥚 were delicious. Nice and runny..

Oh, sliced tops off with a sharp knife.
DH messed about smashing his with a spoon.. 😂

Focalpoint · 11/01/2020 16:38

My mother taught us that the "correct" way was to use a spoon and was bad manners to use a knife to cut the top off. Never understood this and always use a knife...

ScreamingLadySutch · 11/01/2020 17:45

I have a wonderful little thing.

It is a hole, with a bird head swivel on it. The top of the egg pokes through the hole and the 'beak' of the bird pierces the egg, and neatly takes the top off.

Crinkle77 · 11/01/2020 23:17

@EnidBlyton I have cut up the egg carton in the past if I have no.egg cups. OK I do.it your by as way.

Crinkle77 · 11/01/2020 23:18

Aarrgghh stupid autocorrect. Should have said I do it the same as your husband.

Defenbaker · 11/01/2020 23:30

Tap with spoon, then peel off the top carefully. Anything else is savage. Our Lilliputian ancestors went to war for this... don't let their deaths be in vain.

ExpletiveDelighted · 11/01/2020 23:37

Slice them off with the knife I've just buttered my toast with. Can't see any point in smashing the top first. Never, ever call them dippy eggs either, it sounds a bit babyish, never heard anyone call them that in real life.

Swinesinsleepingbags · 11/01/2020 23:42

We call them dippy eggs Xmas Blush
Now I can't sleep thinking of all the witches that have escaped to sea in my in smashed eggs...

Davros · 11/01/2020 23:52

I'm having boiled eggs tomorrow with marmite soldiers.

GlamGiraffe · 11/01/2020 23:56

Witches? Can someone please explain??

SlowSigh · 12/01/2020 09:16

Witches using eggs shells as boats

SlowSigh · 12/01/2020 09:16

@GlamGiraffe

BertieBotts · 12/01/2020 09:16

Just a superstition.

SlowSigh · 12/01/2020 09:21

@BertieBotts No! Did you not read my highly researched evidence? Hmm

NewHorizons2020 · 12/01/2020 09:24

I have an boiled egg decapitator thing. Kids have fun with it !

How do you take the top of your soft boiled eggs
WishThisWasGin · 12/01/2020 09:35

Chuck eggs as they are known here are smashed then sliced. A tiny smidge of butter is added to the yolk to keep it runny.

I always assume it's easy to slice the top off once smashed! Normally I'm doing half a dozen at a time.
