Pregnancy after Blighted Ovum

Hey everyone!

I had a surgical miscarriage yesterday due to a blighted ovum. I would have been 9+1 weeks. This was a planned pregnancy so keen to start trying again. This was mine and my husbands first pregnancy and have tried to see the positives that there was no little life formed. However it’s still so heartbreaking that it just wasn’t our time.

I just wondered if any of you have experienced this and have gone on to have a healthy pregnancy straight after?

I have been told by all the nurses that you are most fertile after a miscarriage however I must wait until my next period before trying again. It’s still early days in my recovery and I know I may not get my period for another 4 weeks at least but I really do hope we can finally have a healthy and successful pregnancy straight away!

Thankyou xx

Hey,

Sorry to hear your sad news. One of my miscarriages was found to be a blighted ovum. I'm currently 6+3 and a healthy heartbeat was found at 6+1, it's still very early for me. But this is the first time in 3 years I've had some positive news.

Be kind to yourself and I hope you recover soon.

Sorry to hear this.

A few years ago I had a surgical management of a blighted ovum and the procedure was on 1st April. I had no period for around 6 weeks.

I then had a positive (successful) pregnancy test on 8th July

Thanks

Thankyou @London91 and @Impatientwino for sharing your stories. I happy you finally have some good news @London91 and wish you all the best!
@Impatientwino that fills me with lots of positivity Thankyou!! Did you experience delayed bleeding and cramping after your surgical management? As today I haven’t experienced any (I know I only had surgery yesterday) but was led to believe I’d get bleeding and clots etc but so far nothing!

Thankyou both again for sharing! And sorry to hear you’ve experienced losses too! Xx

I didn’t strictly have a blighted ovum. I was a little bit further along, more like 6 weeks. Things didn’t happen naturally and I had surgical management at 11 weeks.

I personally needed a month off, so though my cycle started up straight away, ovulated 14 days after d&c and first period at 28 days, we didn’t try until the next month. We were going away on 2 weeks holiday as well so I wanted to just relax and not be like 4 weeks pregnant. I got pregnant that first month of trying. I had an easy pregnancy and birth (home birth, first one was also born at home). All really straightforward. He’s turning 2 next month.

Often these things really are just bad luck. You didn’t do anything to cause it and there’s nothing you can do to prevent it. It’s just one of those things. If you feel ready, there’s no reason not to try straight away.

mindutopia · 09/01/2020 16:41

As for the bleeding, I had really heavy bleeding the first few days and then it got lighter, day 7 after I went back to work and started to bleed really heavily, passed some massive clots. And then it was done by day 9. So you may have bleeding pick up again before it stops totally, especially if you have a really active day.

elliejjtiny · 09/01/2020 16:42

So sorry. I had a blighted ovum in 2005. We started trying again straight away and 4 months later I was pregnant with ds1 who is now 13.

RJJ90 · 09/01/2020 16:44

Hi @mindutopia Thankyou for sharing your story and sorry you’ve been through this too! I’m so happy for you that you had healthy and easy pregnancies after! I hope the same will happen for me to! It’s such a rollercoaster of emotions and it’s been really helpful reaching out to everyone so Thankyou! Xx

Yes. I had a blighted ovum followed by a d&c. I tried immediately after and got pregnant almost immediately (my sister a midwife advised me to not wait). my dd is 19 now.

RJJ90 · 09/01/2020 16:46

@elliejjtiny that’s good to know Thankyou for this as I’ve read it can be delayed but the nurses didn’t actually explain that to me so is really helpful! Thankyou! Fingers crossed it’s not too bad! I’ve been signed off work for two weeks so hoping it will all be over and done with by the 22nd of this month! Xx

I didn't wait - as in had sex without contraception but I think I got pregnant after I had one period.

RJJ90 · 09/01/2020 16:57

@pallisers Thankyou! I really hope I fall next cycle too!! Fingers crossed it won’t be too long until I’m back in track! Who knew I’d be counting down the days until my next period! X

I had this too with surgical management at about 8.5/9 weeks, and it was awful. Felt like my body had totally failed - first in producing a viable fetus and second at miscarrying naturally!

My first period after MC arrived at day 30. My cycles are normally 27-29 days so I was pretty pleased things seemed to adjust pretty quickly!

After AF, we tried again and I fell pregnant again straight away. So had one cycle, then tried again and pregnant now.

I'm just about 18 weeks and everything so far is normal and healthy, although of course I'm still a bit anxious!

A blighted ovum miscarriage is a really common occurrence, not that it makes it any easier to cope with, and it doesn't mean you'll have problems in future pregnancies Thanks

lavenderlemonade · 09/01/2020 18:06

I had one a couple of years ago found out at 12 week scan (March) tablets didn't completely work so had to have the vacuum procedure to remove retaining tissue - that was prob the worst bit. Was in complete shock at the time, had never heard of it before. Period was back within 6 weeks.
Was pregnant again by the September. We didn't actually start trying again until the Sept as we needed to get over the shock. It was also my first pregnancy and we'd told all our family in our excitement.

I was pretty devastated at the time but what kept me going is knowing I could try again. Have 7 month old DC now and never think about the blighted ovum. Sorry for your loss and good luck Biscuit

RJJ90 · 09/01/2020 18:52

Thankyou @Foxd0g and @lavenderlemonade for sharing your stories! Sorry for both you losses but glad to hear you’ve gone on to have further pregnancies! @Foxd0g I wish you all the best with this pregnancy!! Did either of you experience delayed bleeding/cramps after surgery? My cycles are usually pretty regular too so I’m really hoping I’ll be back on track soon! Xxx

Foxd0g · 09/01/2020 19:12

@RJJ90 I had bleeding on and off, I thought it had stopped and it'd start again! The heaviness varied, but I think it was fairly light the first couple of days post surgery and then got heavier. I had the MVA procedure which was under local anaesthetic so I was awake for it, not sure if it'd be different.

Definitely had cramps that I thought had gone then restarted a good while after too, so I think that's normal. The nurse told me bleeding may stop and start along with cramps too.

What helped me was remembering that each pregnancy begins with different cells and therefore is most likely to have a different outcome. My nurse also said that conceiving within 6 months of a MC increases chances of carrying a healthy baby to term Thanks

KondoKonvert · 09/01/2020 19:37

So sorry for your loss Thanks

I had a blighted ovum in 2012. It took me 6 months to fall pregnant again (actively TTCing). I've gone on to have three successful pregnancies and no further miscarriages.

lavenderlemonade · 09/01/2020 19:42

No delayed cramps or bleeding the initial part was all over in one day but I did have to take tablets to start it I'm sure that had an effect. The bleeding lasted a few days but light after day 3.

Not everything came away for me so make sure you are clear of the signs of infection, apparently it's quite common.

RJJ90 · 09/01/2020 20:06

@Foxd0g okay that makes sense. I’m not sure the exact name of the procedure but I was under general anaesthetic. I was in and out of the hospital in one day!

Thankyou of reminding me of that! A lovely little reminder and very true! Flowers xx

@KondoKonvert that’s really positive news!! I really do hope it doesn't take me another 6 months but these things can’t be rushed and it will be when the right time ment to be! Thankyou so much for sharing your story x
