Ten years ago today 7 January 2010-UK covered in snow

Just been reminded that 10 years ago today the whole country was covered in snow and the papers had a satellite picture of the whole uk showing as white. What memories do people have of that winter? My birthday meal in late March was cancelled due to snow and I walked into work for months and the local roads were impassible.

Tube trains ground to a halt over all of London. No buses. Literally could not walk as snow was so deep (in London!)

Was badly needed at work - I'm a nurse in ITU - so my boss drove very very carefully to pick up me and one other colleague who were stuck at a nearby tube station. We made it in one piece to release the night staff, then I had to stay overnight in the nurses accommodation to work the next day too.

We had just moved to the north of Scotland at that time and our garden was under snow for over a month!

PorpentinaScamander · 07/01/2020 18:40

Playing in the back garden with 2 year old DS1 while 3 month old ds2 slept upstairs. I didn't know if I should leave the window open in case he cried or keep it closed to keep him warm

There was a red warning for snow somewhere south west of London. I had exams in London. I stayed in a hotel within walking distance because I was worried about getting there. I was right to worry - even after delaying the start time by an hour some people didn’t make it.

Likethebattle · 07/01/2020 18:41

The M8 gridlocked and came to a complete standstill. People abandoned their vehicles and walked, i walked 7 miles in ankle deep snow to get to a place DH could pick
Me up from!

We had a lot of snow overall in 2010 - both ends of the year.

My first photograph is January 6th. I was actually really poorly so unable to go out. It was tricky getting to the GP and the hospital though as it was hard to get the cars out.

The second is in February - more snow and a good covering again.

But by far the worst for us, in terms of snowfall, was the December. That photograph is of DD, then aged 7y, playing on our road.

It was 6 days before my youngest was born. All three of my DD had snow on the day they were born x

thefemaleJoshLyman · 07/01/2020 18:52

I missed my last day of work in December 2009 because we had a snow day. I went on maternity leave straight after Christmas. I was not allowed out by DM because she was worried about me falling over! DD was born in January 2010, it snowed the night she was born.

KatzP · 07/01/2020 18:52

Well there was a spike in the brith rate that autumn!

AragonsGirl · 07/01/2020 18:53

Got about 2 weeks off work as schools were closed! My now husband had just moved to Scotland and had visions of every winter being snowy...he has been bitterly disappointed every year since!

Timepasses · 07/01/2020 18:57

I was heavily pregnant and couldn't leave the house for weeks as our road was so icy. DS1 will be 10 very soon!

bobstersmum · 07/01/2020 18:58

I was working in a nhs trust hospital for patients with learning disabilities, very long hours and hard work, assaults on staff were very regular. Lots of staff lived in the neighbouring towns as it was pretty rural, we were told by managers that if we couldn't drive in the snow we should walk to work, no matter how long it took or we wouldn't be paid!

BethanyGilbert · 07/01/2020 19:05

We had a big snowball fight at uni. There was two blocks of housing and it was them vs us type attitude. Then we went sledging on our baking trays as our accommodation was on a slight incline.
We still went on night out in high heels and no coats 🥶🥶🥶

ActualHornist · 07/01/2020 19:05

I had one year old twins and no car. It was...challenging to get about. I live in a city but seriously the whole place ground to a halt.

DH was blue-lighted to hospital with suspected swine flu. I felt bad, I’d been telling him to stop complaining of man flu Blush

I slipped on some ice and smacked my head so hard I got a concussion. I didn’t realise till a few days later when my back spasmed and I had to get a taxi to the walk in, crying my eyes out because I was in so much pain. Horrible.

Otherwise it was fab Grin. I bloody love snow ❄️

rollonoctober · 07/01/2020 19:10

I went out for lunch for my birthday and went flying after slipping on the ice. Very bruised bum and scared the life out of the friends I was with as I was pregnant at the time.

Headingtowardsforty · 07/01/2020 19:13

I'm another one who was heavily pregnant. Didn't leave the house for 4 days in case I slipped over. DS was born in February, on a snowy day too.

Lifeoverhaul · 07/01/2020 19:16

I remember I'd just moved house and all the roads were absolutely covered in snow and ice. It was hard to see where give way lines were on the roads. I was clueless. I walked to work for about a month which was hard on the icy paths and roads. My car eventually melted its way free after a few weeks but it wouldn't start. Every other school in the town was closed except the one I worked at. Grin

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 07/01/2020 19:22

I had a home birth in the freezing cold, my midwife lived on a hill and was worried she'd not get out in time - and the other DC school was shut so they were all at home. They thought it was amazing- snowball fights and a new baby. I just remember being cold and that we didn't even have gloves for the baby!

justsomethingred · 07/01/2020 19:26

God, what a winter! I was pregnant with twins. On the first snowy night I got stuck a mile from home because the buses didn't go any further. The next week I remember shuffling around the neighbourhood and again getting stuck when a step in any direction was too slippy to not fall over. But in my memory it's all cosy and beautiful, just me and my babies in a world of fluffy white.

mamalovebird · 07/01/2020 19:26

I was being induced with DS, gave birth on the 10th! I remerber panicking ascthr car got stuck in the snow at one point and I wasn't sure if an ambulance could make it down our street. The maternity unit was packed with the post christmas inductions and pregnant ladies having fallen over (DH went and bought me a pair of Timberlands to try and help me get about!) One lady gave birth in the ante natal cubicle next to me as there were no delivery suites available. The nurses still did a fab job though, despite a lot of pressure. I never felt anything other than well looked after. If they were struggling, they certainly didn't show it.

Queenest · 07/01/2020 19:28

My baby was just over a week old and two of my antenatal friends battled through the snow and ice to get to the hospital to have theirs on this very day. There were hardly any staff in the labour ward but one lovely midwife had walked 9 miles to get in to work. Shock And she stayed for 2 days to help out. Some people are just awesome.

ginrummy1 · 07/01/2020 19:30

Scotland here and I can remember going on a night out on 30th Nov it started snowing that night and the snow that was ploughed off the roads/pavements was still there in March.
Our schools had been off all week, no snow over the weekend so everyone was geared to the DC's going back on the Monday and it then snowed overnight on the Sunday, I could have cried 😄

KenzoBaby · 07/01/2020 19:31

I struggled to get to the hospital where my grandfather was for several months before he died. :-(

I forgot what normal shoes were. Wore wellies constantly.
