Need a fool proof method. I can not cook rice no matter how hard I try, it's ridiculous. Someone please tell me the secret.

Use a rice cooker

Finfintytint · 07/01/2020 16:40

I boil it up in a saucepan. As soon as it comes to the boil I cover it with a lid and take it off the hob for 10 minutes then drain.

mawbroon · 07/01/2020 16:40

I microwave mine. Took a bit of trial and error, but now it's perfect every time

mbosnz · 07/01/2020 16:40

Rice cooker. Even I can't cock it up.

gastropod · 07/01/2020 16:41

Two handfuls of rice per adult, one per child. Rinse a few times. Put rinsed, drained rice in saucepan. Cover with 2cms cold water. Bring to the boil. Keep on the boil until holes appear in the rice, turn off the heat and cover with a tight fitting lid for at least 20 minutes. Don't take off the lid until 20 mins are up. Fluff up grains with a fork and enjoy.

Gammeldragz · 07/01/2020 16:41

I use brown rice, it's very forgiving!

QuestionableMouse · 07/01/2020 16:41

Buy the frozen stuff. Nuke for 3mins and it's perfect every time.

bowtieandheels · 07/01/2020 16:42

I used to be the same until someone showed me this- put the rice in the pan, add enough cold water to cover the rice then another inch above it. Bring it to the boil then put a lid on and turn it right down low. Perfect every time!

FreckledLeopard · 07/01/2020 16:43

I spent years never being able to cook rice properly, then used a new method and it's wonderful and I've had perfect rice ever since.

So, rice cooking is done by volume. Get a set of US style cups (1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup etc - helpful if you use US baking recipes too).

For each one cup of rice, you need two cups of boiling water.

Boil kettle. Tip one cup of rice into a saucepan. Add two cups of boiling water. Place lid on the saucepan. Bring to the boil and immediately turn the heat down to the lowest setting. Leave for 10 minutes. Then turn the heat off totally. Leave for another 10 minutes. Leave lid on throughout. At the end of the 10 minutes, you have perfect rice.

One cup of rice serves two adults.

LongstantonSpiceMuseum · 07/01/2020 16:43

You can get rice cookers that just go in the microwave. I used to find cooking rice a real pain but I don't now!

Firstaidnovice · 07/01/2020 16:43

We have a rice measure - I do one cup of rice to three cups water, bring it to the boil, turn the heat down to a simmer with the lid slightly off, simmer until the water is nearly gone, then leave for ten minutes off the heat with a tea towel over the top and lid back on. Very easy and comes out fine every single time. Using standard basmati rice - I accidentally bought easy cook rice once and it went badly wrong

WellTidy · 07/01/2020 16:43

And wash the rice before you cook it

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/01/2020 16:43

Double the amount of boiling water to rice. Simmer until all liquid is absorbed then leave off the heat with a clean tea towel folded under the lid for 10 mins and then fluff with a fork.

BitchyArriver · 07/01/2020 16:44

Mine is the most delicious.

Melt big knob butter in my small cast iron pan. Toss in 8oz rice, stir, add 3/4 pint chicken stock. Cover with lid and cook on low gas for 20 mins. Don’t open lid. Take off heat and leave for another 10.

YappityYapYap · 07/01/2020 16:44

Buy the Uncle Ben's micro rice! Or if you want to actually make the rice, boil it for 12 minutes, strain it, rinse it through with cold water in the colander then return it to the pan with 1cm of water in it to reheat. Rinsing is the key and stops it being starchy

Delia always knows best imo!

hiddenmnetter · 07/01/2020 16:45

Instant pot. 1:1 ratio water to rice, then put the lid on, seal and press the 'rice' button. If you want it fluffier wash it first.

EmmiJay · 07/01/2020 16:45

One cup of rice per person. So one cup of rice then two cups of water. I use only basmati and haven't cocked it up yet lol.

YappityYapYap · 07/01/2020 16:45

Or as PP said, rinse the rice before cooking

MummaGiles · 07/01/2020 16:46

Boil a pan of water, add salt, add rice, cook uncovered for 12 minutes, drain with hot water to remove excess starch, serve.

DaanSaaf · 07/01/2020 16:46

@gastropod thank you! I will try

@Finfintytint and @mawbroon that is nowhere near specific enough!

I don't really want a rice cooker, I have a slow cooker though would that work?

@QuestionableMouse I love the frozen stuff, I just want mine to taste like that.

@Gammeldragz brown you say....

Rinse the rice in a sieve.
Equal parts of rice and cold water in a saucepan.
Heat until boiling.
Turn down, lid on until the water has gone.
As soon as it’s cooked give it a stir so it doesn’t stick as it cools.

(i’m asian)

SherlocksDeerstalker · 07/01/2020 16:47

Rinse first. Don’t stir. The two most important rules when cooking rice. I find one method just as good as another as long as you follow these.

DaanSaaf · 07/01/2020 16:49

X posted with loads there. I'll try a few of these out, thanks. My next thread will be on Yorkshire puddings Angry

I buy basmati. Boil water, set a timer so you remember what you're doing. When water's boiled add the rice, set a timer for 7 min. Check the rice at that point. If it's not done it soon will be so don't walk away or do anything else.
