Do you like January?

I feel a nice clean feeling in January- Christmas cleared away and everything sparse and hopeful for the year to come- are you January lovers or haters?

OP posts:
IdblowJonSnow · 07/01/2020 20:50

I normally dont like it and wasnt looking forward to it but enjoying january so far! Back to routine this week.

DickDewy · 07/01/2020 20:52

I like it - especially if we get some proper wintry weather.

Inappropriatefemale · 07/01/2020 20:54

January is my least favourite month, there’s something very depressing about this month and I don’t know why.

speakout · 07/01/2020 20:55

I'm with you OP.

I love the simplicity, the minimalist feel, easy simple food, quiet shops, Everyone moving more slowly, it is a refreshing change to the panic and high energy of the festive season.
Tidy house, time to appreciate routine and simple pleasures.

cheezy · 07/01/2020 20:57

I quite like January. It’s a good contrast to the frenzy and excess of December. It’s a slow quiet month of taking stock, planning ahead and reflection. Lighting the fire, lots of candles, lots of reading. I also love winter landscapes so I love to get out in the murk. I love drizzle and grey skies but also love cold snaps. I think I’m in a minority there! I also love hyacinths and they’re a very January thing to me. In fact if there’s a season that makes me blue it’s summer, when everyone is out having fun and I feel obliged to be all happy Confused

bluejelly · 07/01/2020 21:01

I feel exactly the same @cheezy

I always feel calmer and more hopeful in January

AgeLikeWine · 07/01/2020 21:01

I’m not a fan of January. It’s my second least favourite month, after December. Too dark, too cold, too miserable. It always feels like the longest month of the year, and not in a good way.

My favourite months are June and September, because we usually Go on holiday in those months.

IWishItWasSummer · 07/01/2020 21:02

I don’t mind it as the nights slowly start to get lighter as do the mornings. It’s the beginning of the end for me tbh as I loathe the short days and see nothing endearing in twinkly lights, lying under blankets on the sofa or wearing warm clothes. It’s getting closer to flip flop season for me ☺️

SomewhereNow · 07/01/2020 21:04

I’ve hated it for years but I’ve realised I’m wishing away 1/12 of every year and that’s just daft so I’m making a concerted effort to find positives in January this year - this thread is helping!

PhilODox · 07/01/2020 21:04

I like it, provided it's mostly dry.
My birthday is January Smile

Fishcakey · 07/01/2020 21:06

I hate January and February. It's dark, there is nothing to look forward to, we have no money, I'm emetophobic and apparently half the world has Norovirus and my kitchen floor is permanently covered in mud from the dogs.

vinoandbrie · 07/01/2020 21:13

January is my worst month at work, so it tends to be dire and last forever. I find these dark months quite difficult overall - it much easier once the clocks go forward at the end of March.

Crunchymum · 07/01/2020 21:25

It's s horrid month but I'm trying to change my thinking as both DC2 and DC3 (not twins) have January birthdays.

ShinyGiratina · 07/01/2020 21:36

It probably beats November most years, purely because the worst of the short days have passed and there are shoots and buds begining to appear and indicate that the winter gloom may not actually be interminable.

I've done RED January for a few years, and forcing myself out to exercise daily does give me a boost, and a sense of purpose to a month that is basically a temporal version of a hangover.

I'm a spring lover. Autumn is beautiful, just a shame it's followed by months of gloom. I like a good summer too, sunshine and pleasant temperatures. Unfortunately 2019 was too hot/ wet to go out most days and my winter cabin fever got going back in September.

Delatron · 07/01/2020 21:54

Yes it’s nice to get back in to a routine after the Christmas madness. Let’s be honest though, the novelty of that will wear off in a week or so. Isn’t the 26th Jan the most depressing day of the year?

Leflic · 07/01/2020 22:16

Love January. In my head the calendar is a circle with January at the itop” , after the long slow drag up from autumn to Christmas. It all about new starts but also a bit of a relax and a regain.

It’s also my birthday, so after all the Chrustmas fuss has died a little I get to party. Always a weekend away in Europe to take the edge off.Flights and hotels are dirt cheap I always get masses of presents too as people still haven’t given away their unwanted Christmas gifts.

This year is great as it’s warmish and not too bad weather wise. And the light is creeping back now.

I dislike February. Pointless month. Neither Spring nor Winter. Weathers rubbish.Spent all my birthday/ Christmas money and Valenetines day is cringe.

Inappropriatefemale · 07/01/2020 22:34

Haha the months of the years are in a curved line to me and January and February are dark coloured and it starts to get light coloured in March and June, July and August are the brightest colours!!GrinBlush

BellatrixLestat · 07/01/2020 22:36

I quite like January. I like the 'fresh start' aspect and starting to plan the year ahead.

Worst months for me are March and September. The weather can never decide what to do and they're just so dull.

MarshaBradyo · 07/01/2020 22:40

Inspired by pp I’m going with palette cleanser after richness of Christmas. I could take colder weather though. 13 is mild.

milliefiori · 07/01/2020 22:40

I like it. I love how clear the house looks once the decorations are down. I love bringing potted bulbs into the house and watching them grow and bloom. I love the push of the New Year. Lots of planning (I love planning) fun things - researching holidays, gigs and festivals. Lots of hilly walks, detox, Dry Jan, starting new pastimes etc.

DinosApple · 07/01/2020 22:51

I slap a smile on it for January as one DC has a birthday mid month. I try to find the positives.

Her birthday most likely to be coldest day of the year, more than one birthday party has been held with heavy non settling snow falling, snow drops pop up, nights start to pull out. I like a fresh start once the decs are down.

That's a great idea about potted bulbs, my favourite are hyacinths, I usually have some at home by now, but the chili plants are doing so well I've not got any more on the go yet.

On the down side I've got bills to sort and I need ideas for DC2's birthday. Party this year will thankfully be smaller, and at home.

HoldMyLobster · 07/01/2020 23:00

January - excited for skiing
February - bit sick of skiing
March - when will this fucking snow melt
April - consider emigrating
May - oh this is nice.

Every year.

Deelish75 · 07/01/2020 23:27

When I was younger I hated Jan & Feb, but now I quite like it. Dd was born very early Jan so we usually celebrate it the first weekend after New Year (just family) then it’s time to rest after the business of Christmas and DD’s birthday.
We live by a park and it’s nice walking through it, usually all the leaves have been cleared away from autumn making the park look clean and by mid Feb the daffodils are starting to shoot and trees are starting to bud, nights are drawing out meaning we stop in the playground on our way home from school.

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 07/01/2020 23:31

Hated it when I lived in the Northern Hemisphere. Now I love it because its summer and I can go to the beach a lot. What is rubbish though is my birthday used to be in summer, but now its in winter!

Likethebattle · 07/01/2020 23:40

@Butchyrestingface I hear ya, west coast of Scotland at this time of year is grim. It’s been grey for weeks.
