Sharks are independent from birth. I always thought their mums took care of them but apparently not. Blush
Anyone else got anything they were surprised to discover.

@MyOtherProfile Bruce Murrie was the son of the president of Hershey’s chocolate and had a 20% share in M&Ms because Mars used to use Hershey’s chocolate due to a shortage of chocolate in the war. Only know that cos I googled it to see who he was myself

“The world's highest mountain is in Hawaii - Everest is only the highest above sea level.” And there’s my new bit of knowledge thank you! (Great to store these things up for pub quizzes or playing quiz up general knowledge)

Thanks, Graphista Blush
I've just looked it up and, technically, Mauna Kea in Hawaii is actually classed as the tallest mountain in the world, not the highest (?!)

There is an island in France called Pheasant Island. on 1st February, it will be part of Spain and then, on 1st August, it will belong to France again. Ownership of it has passed peacefully between the two countries every six months for over 350 years.

The United Kingdom consumes more cans of baked beans than the rest of the world combined. Good to know that we come up trumps at something (sorry! Grin)

Just five minutes ago, I was looking for info about something else and my mind went off tangentially to the old Green Shield Stamps scheme, which I remember participating at the local corner shop to my school, until they scrapped it in 1991.

I never knew that the scheme itself didn't actually sink without a trace, but I've just learned that they changed the rules to allow people to buy things partly with stamps and partly with cash, before eventually making it cash only and then amalgamating it into Argos!

The UK has venomous moles.

We did until 2016, but they became extinct at the same time that Terry Wogan died, as his trousers were their last remaining habitat Grin Grin Grin

Holland is a province, not a country.

The Holland fact has come up at least 3 times in this thread now. It's obviously quite a shocker!

If you want to be really pedantic in a quiz, you just need to ask how they are defining 'highest' in pub quizzes when it comes to highest mountains?

Highest relative to sea level
Relative to the centre of the Earth
Can you include mountains that rise out of the sea?

Of course you might get a few looks.....

Especially in the community quizzes I help to organise, from the people who are just waiting and hoping there'll be a round on Love Island or this week's bargains at Lidl Grin

Has anybody mentioned Holland yet?

I once wanted to send a cheque to the monarch there, but the post office told me that there was no such country, so I had no option but to cancel it....

The education curriculum is different around the world, my cousins sister in law is South African, she's come over to attend uni but has to do a 6 month bridging course first. I was amazed that there isn't a minimum standard that the world has to reach.

@OhWellThatsJustGreat, I know a doctor (embarrassingly forgotten where she is from) who is currently doing an access course so she can apply to university this year to get a degree to allow her to do the same job over here

The dimensions of A4 paper (and A3, A2 etc) make it perfect for expanding in proportion from the corner.

The ratio of the sides is always the square root of 2.

I don't think any other ratio would work to let you have the properties of the A paper sizes.

@catwithflowers , I got mine from Tescos just before Christmas. I am not sure if they sell them all year round but it was not a Christmas themed packet so I would of thought so.
