Churchgoers less like to be cat people.

According to today's times. I'm pretty sure they've got it wrong.
I'm a practicing Catholic and have two, my parents are Anglicans and have one.
Many priests I know have cats and I managed to convert a bishop friend into a devoted cat slave. After being adamant he wasn't having a cat. He has two!

I'm a churchgoer and have a cat.

RhythimIsRhythim · 06/01/2020 11:57

A previous neighbour used to say “dog people like to be part of the pack, cat people like to follow their own path”. So on that way of thinking I could see how being a church goer (or liking joining any sort of group organisation) might be more dog person than cat person.

SisterAgatha · 06/01/2020 11:58

dog people like to be part of the pack, cat people like to follow their own path

That rings so true to me. Wow.

hmm, we have both and I have an irrational hatred of anyone who wants to join me when I am walking my dog, it is a veyr solitary thing I do!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/01/2020 12:35

Apparently it's because having cats as something to serve/ worship takes the place of God/Religion.

HebeMumsnet · 06/01/2020 12:39

I am not a churchgoer and I DO have cats. So clearly it is true. However, I like to think my cats are here to worship ME rather than the other way round. I'm not sure what that bombshell does to the theory... Maybe my CATS are religious??!

Paddington68 · 06/01/2020 12:44

We have quiet a few dogs who come to services in the church I go to. Fewer cats.

OddBoots · 06/01/2020 12:47

We are church-goers with guinea pigs, I like cats but dh is allergic and we just don't have the time to devote to a dog so neither features on our radar so I am not sure what if anything that says about us.

ohohohmerrychristmas · 06/01/2020 12:51

Catholic raised and have had cats, dogs, gerbils, rabbit, guinea pig, budgie and fish ... dunno what that says about me !! Definitely preferred my dogs though .

MaidenMotherCrone · 06/01/2020 13:01

I haven't read the article but as a side note I'm Pagan and have cats (and dogs) and every Pagan I know has cats.

theThreeofWeevils · 06/01/2020 13:13

A lapsed Catholic with an accidental (as in he decided to move in, thereby considerably cheesing off his previous household) cat. Make of that what you will.

MarieVanGoethem · 06/01/2020 13:16

Seriously, we believe in “one holy, catholic & apostolic church”: what more do these people want from us?! (And for the record I’ve two cats; my daddy & stepmother have a cat [mixed marriage, don’t know which side of things the cat comes down on Wink ]; my granny had a cat; & my other grandparents had cats [though they weren’t much for church-going, well not by the time I was on the scene & I think even before that it was mostly granny’s sisters who saw to taking Daddy to Mass etc... but still...])

Anyone else feel there should be a census conducted...

YetAnotherSpartacus · 06/01/2020 13:18

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats might have something to say about this!

I'm an atheist who is sadly catless but longs for a cat-God (or two - Monotheism is so last Millenium) to serve.

I also love stories of church cats.

Make of that what you will.

Camomila · 06/01/2020 13:18

We're churchgoers and will be getting a cat as soon as we have our own house.
Dogs remind me a bit of messy toddlers, but they don't get better as they get older!

squeekums · 06/01/2020 13:25

Athiest cat owner - me
Dp athiest dog owner

we also have chooks, fish, a budgie, a rabbit

ParanoidGynodroid · 06/01/2020 13:44

dog people like to be part of the pack, cat people like to follow their own path

What a lot of silliness. Lots of people, like me, have both.

My two close friends who are churchgoers both have cats, but in any case, churchgoers are, I’m sure, just as individual and unpredictable as anyone else.

OddBoots · 06/01/2020 14:22

Ooh, @MarieVanGoethem - you have just reminded me that there was an (Anglican) small group of nuns that lived near me growing up and they had a cat called 'Magnifi-Cat'

MmeSzyszkoBohusz · 06/01/2020 14:26

Five cats here... plus one organist and director of music, one church choir alto, and one teenage choral scholar (all human).

BaronessBomburst · 06/01/2020 14:32

All the religious people I know have cats, and they're all low church. None of the Catholics have cats, but I'm not sure they count as I only know bad Catholics, the sort who only go to church if there's a party afterwards.Wink Grin

BenWyatt · 06/01/2020 14:34

@mmeszyszkoBohusz

Church director of music, organist, bass, and alto, plus two dogs here Grin

Thankfully no paranoid bassoonist thought

moanyhole · 06/01/2020 19:02

Practicing catholic and have a cat a dog 3 goldfish and 8 Guinea pigs Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2020 11:44

@HebeMumsnet. Wash your mouth out. How dare you suggest you are a superior being to your cats.

My friends cat spends a lot of time in his Chapel and has been known to join him for Mass. but she also trashed his crib scene, so I'm quite sure what her beliefs are!

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 07/01/2020 13:07

I think Hebe is just delusional.

Dollywilde · 07/01/2020 13:26

My church has an annual animal blessing service (always total chaos Grin) and while dogs are in the majority there are always plenty of cats, along with the odd bird or rabbit...

Witchend · 07/01/2020 14:04

I work in a church and I would say there's considerably more cat lovers than dog lovers in ours.
