tigerwhocametoT · 06/01/2020 09:01

I stupidly had sex 8 hours after taking the morning after pill and wondering if I need to take another one today or if the pill I took 8 hours before sex is still effective.Blush

Thank you.

No you would need a copper coil fitted

ThelmaDinkley · 06/01/2020 09:04

I don’t think it is effective and I’m not sure you would be prescribed another one. I think you may need to get a coil fitted.

Tatty101 · 06/01/2020 09:05

Not 100% but dont think you can take two MAP in one month.

You should really think about longer term contraception so you dont have to deal with this stress (or a potential baby!) every time you have sex ...

I’m pretty sure it’s still effective - but maybe you need to rethink your contraception. An IUD like the Mirena could be brilliant for you.

Did you not feel horrific after taking the MAP? I felt like death!

helpmum2003 · 06/01/2020 09:07

. Depending on which emergency pill you had you may be able to have another. Copper coil is by far the best for emergency contraception and gives you an ongoing method so recommend asking for that.
If you've only had unprotected sex in last 5 days you can have it. Often you can have it even if you've had unprotected sex more than 5 days ago in the same cycle.

tigerwhocametoT · 06/01/2020 09:15

I was taking cerezette for 6 months when I started bleeding nonstop and having a lot of headaches so I stopped taking it.

@crosspelican no I feel fine thankfully.

After I had my baby,I was thinking about getting the copper coil fitted but I went against it after reading about all the side effects on here.

OP posts:
tigerwhocametoT · 06/01/2020 09:21

@helpmum2003 it was Levonorgestrel.
With the copper coil I'm really worried about the heavy painful bleeding and also i read that chance of infection and sepsis increase.

OP if you had unprotected sex in the cause of just a few days which I can only assume is what happened then I would definitely suggest you get a coil. As others have said they will sort this issue and also give you long term protection. I would highly recommend the mirena coil but not sure if they would give you this as a post sex protection.

These things happen but it's clear you're chances of having sex are greater than you thought they were and so some kind of protection is needed.

Talk to a doctor urgently to get this sorted, if you're not keen on having a coil still talk to them about it as they might give you something for the nerves if needed.

nocluewhattodoo · 06/01/2020 09:24

I think the copper coil will be your only option as an emergency contraceptive now unfortunately, you will not be allowed to take another MAP. You can always have the coil removed if it doesn't agree with you - it's whether you'd rather a few bad periods or potentially an unwanted pregnancy.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/01/2020 09:25

How can you make the same mistake 8 hours after taking the MAP? If you don't want another baby stop being irresponsible.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/01/2020 09:29

MAP works by stopping ovulation. So it depends whether you ovulated (or would have ovulated) before or after taking the pill.

KingBobra · 06/01/2020 09:33

A quick Google says that "levonorgestrel will not protect you from getting pregnant if you have sex after taking the pills".

Wallywobbles · 06/01/2020 09:35

I have a plain copper coil and while it takes a long while to settle in it does give you 5 years of protection.

tigerwhocametoT · 06/01/2020 09:41

I definitely don't want a baby. Can't believe I put myself in this position.

ODFO GiveHerHellFromUs.

OP needs practical advice not people sticking the boot in for cheap thrills.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/01/2020 09:46

@wakemewhenitsallover I'm not sticking the boot in for cheap thrills.

It's ridiculous to say 'I made a mistake' 8 hours taking the MAP and to be fair to OP she's acknowledged that.

And considering you've only posted to tell me to FO your post is no more helpful so stop being hypocritical please and thank you.

tigerwhocametoT · 06/01/2020 09:56

@wakemewhenitsallover I'm actually not bothered by giveherhellfromUs unhelpful comment. There's always one unhelpful Mumsnetter who comes on these kind of threads it's to be expected lol.

I'm on copper coil number 3. I'm also neutropenic so high risk for sepsis/infections and have never had an issue. My periods were always heavy, so no change but they last a day longer. No more painful
The 24hrs after fitting are always crampy and uncomfortable for me but it quickly settles down

LuluJakey1 · 06/01/2020 10:00

To be fair, @giveherhellfromus makes an entirely reasonable point. You sound a bit feckless.

allthesharks · 06/01/2020 10:08

I previously tried to get the copper coil as emergency contraception and it was impossible. Both the GP and the family planning clinic said I needed a consultation appointment first and couldn't have it fitted on the same day - it was more than a 6 week wait as they only fitted them one day a week. I don't know where you're supposed to be able to get it from within 5 days.

I'm not sure, but it might be able to take a different MAP to the one you've already taken in the same cycle.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 06/01/2020 10:09

FWIW I'm on my second copper coil and have no side effects at all other than a bit of minor discomfort as it settles in.

Even if you do end up with side effects, better some heavy bleeding that can be managed/a coil that can be removed if needed, than an unwanted baby (which is a very real possibility).

Butterflyflower1234 · 06/01/2020 10:11

Unsure about your original question but I recommend a mirina coil. It's a little uncomfortable being fitted but it takes away the stress. I continued to have a light period but no other side effects.

Pinkbonbon · 06/01/2020 10:13

Why did he put you in that position? Have you not explained the situation to him? I mean of course you need to take responsibility yourself but if you say to a decent man 'hey I'm not protected right now so can we use condoms?' they oblige. And the certainly don't screw you again unprotected knowing youve just had to take the morining after pill!!

So are you not discussing things with him or is he a just a pig?

tigerwhocametoT · 06/01/2020 10:13

I can't get an appointment with my Gp or the family planning clinic today so I will go and speak to a pharmacist and see what they say about taking another MAP.

OP posts:
GiveHerHellFromUs · 06/01/2020 10:18

Why did he put you in that position?
Seriously? Come on. They both put themselves in that position. They're both jointly response.

OP it might actually be worth phoning 111 and seeing if they can get you a GP appointment or nurse appointment at a walk in centre (if you can't take the MAP again or if you'd rather just get the coil straight away).
