8b NHS - what kind of work do they do?

Is it high up or low down?

I’ve tried googling but just get a lot of agenda for change stuff! Potential date, asked him what he did for work and he said 8b NHS?!

Bit vague and I didn’t want to push!

Erm any where from service manager(manages lots of ward or clinical teams), to head of logistics
In some trusts deputy or associate directors - but usually they are 8c or 8d

It’s usually a trust level job, with responsibility for more than one area.
So head of OT or physio in a trust perhaps
Although trusts can decide how much they pay and where in the afc people sit.

LanieM87 · 05/01/2020 19:43

It's a fairly high banding - usually some sort of managerial position. Could be clinical or admin based.

hereiamagain84 · 05/01/2020 19:44

It’s one of the highest grades there is - highest in my profession anyway

foxatthewindow · 05/01/2020 19:45

It’s a well paid, fairly senior job, salary around the £50k mark and upwards. Assuming non clinical then senior management/leadership. Could also be someone like a senior pharmacist, or other clinical person, but you would expect that they might have elaborated it it was a clinical area

SconNotScone · 05/01/2020 19:45

That is really vague! It could be a clinical or non-clinical role! The higher the band though, the better the basic salary.

If you follow this link and scroll down, it gives a few examples of 8b roles.

Ward manager/ nurse team lead is a band 7. So band 8s are service managers, professional leads etc. That's clinically though so I'm sure there will be other professions with the NHS who are band 8s eg HR and managerial. I dont think medics are banded but I could be wrong.

justenoughjim · 05/01/2020 19:46

I would think he was a bit if a knob for saying that tbh. Just say I'm a nurse, physio nhs manager. Not essentially send your pay grade Hmm

SconNotScone · 05/01/2020 19:46

Oh I see others beat me to it while I was faffing!

VivaLeBeaver · 05/01/2020 19:46

Where I am the advanced neonatal nurse practitioners are on 8b, and also bizarrely so is the Head of women and children’s services. 🤷‍♀️

VivaLeBeaver · 05/01/2020 19:48

And I agree it’s a silly answer to give. Did he give no indication of whether he’s clinical or admin/manager.

mayaknew · 05/01/2020 19:48

Also vaguest answer ever. Why not just give job title ? 🙈 he may be lovely so dont listen to me but that would frustrate me. 🤣

lljkk · 05/01/2020 19:50

Quite high, high stress.

MemorialBeach · 05/01/2020 19:50

Fairly high up, agenda for change bands only go up to 9 (I believe chief executives and director level roles are covered by Very Senior Managers payscales. Examples of each band:

www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/working-health/working-nhs/nhs-pay-and-benefits/agenda-change-pay-rates

It's a bit of a rubbish way of describing their job though, as it doesn't actually tell you what they do, just what pay range their salary falls in and roughly how senior they are. They could be a doctor, a senior nurse, senior therapist, finance manager, IT infrastructure expert or one of many other things.

MemorialBeach · 05/01/2020 19:52

Cross post with lots of other people!

EnglishRain · 05/01/2020 19:56

I think that's a really weird way to identify yourself. It's basically saying I work in this sector and earn x. I work in the NHS and wouldn't say that.

8b roles include Finance Managers, Deputy Ops Managers, Head of Procurement etc at my Trust.

Sharkyfan · 05/01/2020 19:59

Quite senior

But agree quite a weird way to describe what you do!

AnnaMagnani · 05/01/2020 20:01

Not a doctor. Doctors aren't in the Agenda for Change payscale.

BraveSpiritKindHeart · 05/01/2020 20:03

He told you what he gets paid. Not his job. Dump him, he's a knob!

Mlou32 · 05/01/2020 20:05

It could be anything. Psychologist (although he would probably say that as opposed to just 8b), nurse in a management type role, someone working in quality assurance, IT...anything really. It's a weird way to describe your job, not many people outside the NHS would know anything whatsoever about bandings and even those who are aware of agenda for change, 8b tells them nothing about what the job is, rather only their salary and seniority. Strange.

KnucklesMcGinty · 05/01/2020 20:05

It is an odd way to describe your job, but some NHS staff can get very obsessed with AFC grades. I think they sometimes forget that the rest of the world doesn't use the same payscale!

KnucklesMcGinty · 05/01/2020 20:07

Also, some people are wary of telling you what they do, in case they get asked for a diagnosis! Happens to my friend a lot. He is deliberately vague.

AdmiralJaneway · 05/01/2020 20:08

It’s a very odd way to describe your role! I’m in that region and am a service manager and that’s not the way I’d describe my role.

Mumof1andacat · 05/01/2020 20:10

I work with an 8b. Hes a consultant neuro psychologist

BarbaraofSeville · 05/01/2020 20:11

Does he actually work for the NHS or another agency or healthcare related organisation?

I know some other employers where people are on AFC grades but aren't conventional NHS trusts. It's still a fairly senior management grade possibly combined with something extremely specialist and possibly a bit secret.
