If WW3 kicked off, and you were forced to enlist, do you think you'd cope?

I 100% wouldn't.

I've looked at the army website and the fitness levels they require alone are way above my baseline level (out of breath when running up stairs Grin)

I'm very small and weigh 6 and a half stone, so would probably be a liability to my fellow troops.

How do you think you'd fare?

What a ridiculous question

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 04/01/2020 21:27

Why? What's ridiculous about it?

I'm talking about fitness levels.

WineOrGinOrBoth · 04/01/2020 21:27

Interesting.

Think I’d be exempt. I’ve RA & a host of other illnesses. One of DC has a life threatening condition so I would imagine would exempt.

Would asthma disqualify people I wonder?

Bunnybigears · 04/01/2020 21:28

If they were to call people up you wouldnt have to pass the fitness tests I wouldnt have thought. I wouldnt cope because I wouldnt agree to it and probably be thrown in jail or something.

MyNewBearTotoro · 04/01/2020 21:29

Nope, absolutely not. I’ve struggled with my mental health a lot in the past and I don’t think I would pass the psychological/ medical exam. If somehow I did get in I don’t think I’d cope mentally but also I definitely don’t have the fitness levels either!

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 04/01/2020 21:30

I think asthma would disqualify you from voluntarily joining the army, but maybe if we got to the stage of conscription it would be no holds barred.

TheMemoryLingers · 04/01/2020 21:30

I'd be too old.

ImTheCaddy · 04/01/2020 21:31

I'd give it a go! I think I'd probably be too old though. Depends what the cut off is.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 04/01/2020 21:32

NewBear That's very true. Sorry to hear, I hope you're feeling better Thanks

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 04/01/2020 21:33

I doubt they'd want a fat, unfit 43 year old woman but who knows!

I'd rather offer my help in another way eg healthcare in field hospital etc

helpfulperson · 04/01/2020 21:34

I think it's a really interesting question. I think the fitness levels required would probably reduce as the war progressed.

I often wonder what would make me join a resistance cell and pick up a gun/ plant bombs etc - what would it take for me to kill another person. The trite answer is to protect what I love but at what point would that kick in. If I'd lived in France in 1940 would I be a resistance member or a collaborator

Alwaysrainsonme · 04/01/2020 21:35

Sitting in my house, trying to imagine it, I don’t think I could. But many ordinary people in both WWs were extraordinary resilient and brave because they had to be. I hope I could step up if I had to.

SummerPavillion · 04/01/2020 21:35

Are single mums exempt? Grin

Actually I'm interested whether I'd pass the fitness test... reckon I might just squeeze through on adrenaline and determination.

darkriver19886 · 04/01/2020 21:35

I wouldn't cope.

Littleshortcake · 04/01/2020 21:36

Great question. I don't think they would want me for my fitness or physical ability but maybe I could cook for the masses

darkriver19886 · 04/01/2020 21:38

They wouldn't want me on the field due to heart condition and severe mental health problems. however i am good at computers so hopefully i would be useful in other ways.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 04/01/2020 21:38

Caddy That's my trail of thought, I'd give it a go (don't think we'd have much choice) but I wouldn't be much use.

Clouds I'm currently training in a medical field, so that's probably where my use would come in too! I do genuinely think that my fitness level would be a hindrance.

Helpful That's very thought provoking. I can't imagine myself using a gun or setting out to kill people, training to be a medic - that's the opposite of what I want to do.
But, at the same time, there must be a point where everything turns; it's just a question of what that point is.

I have cerebral palsy so they'd have to be fairly desperate to try to conscript me! I'm also anti-war in the vast majority of circumstances. I wouldn't cope, physically or mentally, and would probably be better off going to jail if those were the options.

TheQueef · 04/01/2020 21:38

If they ever got desperate enough to conscript me I can confidently say all is lost.
I'd be hiding somewhere with all the guns until it blew over.

MissChananderlerbong · 04/01/2020 21:39

I was in the RAF so I would cope, DH was also in the RAF so as a household we'd be be quite helpful (altho Id need a refresh on the rifle, I dont think I'd kill anyone with my current skills!)

Iwillgotothegym · 04/01/2020 21:39

I wouldn’t be fit enough for physical combat. I’m not sure what kind of war it would be though. There would probably be important desk work that needed doing, if for example civil service called up.

RoundWithAFridge · 04/01/2020 21:41

This will be a cyber war, not hand to hand combat in the UK.

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 04/01/2020 21:41

Ok, the basic fitness levels for the army now are;

  • A 2km run in 11mins and 15 seconds or less, following an 800m warm up jog for between 6 minutes 30 and 7 minutes
  • Throwing a 4kg medicine ball at least 2.9m (bare minimum)
  • A mid thigh pull of 46 units + (46kg)

Going by that, I'd be utterly useless.

OP posts:
IjustMadeTheCall · 04/01/2020 21:42

I'd actually wouldn't mind it.

I've always wanted to join but life got in the way. I guess now i've missed the boat.

I don't think they'd be able to send away mothers? what would happen to all the children?

BaubleTheLumpOfCoal · 04/01/2020 21:43

TheQueef can I hide with you? I'll bring snacks.

Those saying cyber war, do you think we'd be drafted in to assist still?
If you're not technologically minded, how could you help?
