If WW3 kicked off, and you were forced to enlist, do you think you'd cope?

I 100% wouldn't.

I've looked at the army website and the fitness levels they require alone are way above my baseline level (out of breath when running up stairs Grin)

I'm very small and weigh 6 and a half stone, so would probably be a liability to my fellow troops.

How do you think you'd fare?

I am ex Army and still keep myself really fit and husband still serving; I reckon I'd give it another crack!! (Albeit an older, aching version second time around.....).

SummerPavillion · 04/01/2020 22:01

If there was a women-only army I reckon we'd all pull together to protect each other and limit harm to ourselves and the enemy as much as possible.

Or rebel en mass and they'd have to call off the whole thing.

Wonder if the other countries' women armies would do the same. Maybe?

PigletJohn · 04/01/2020 22:03

in times of desperation, when conscripts are needed, they will take pretty well anybody. When a nation is on the verge of defeat, they will have used up all the fit, useful people.

But WW3 will probably not last long enough for mass conscription. You might get forced to join a local warlord, though.

isabellerossignol · 04/01/2020 22:04

My fitness would probably be OK. But my age and medical history would rule me out. But if they tried enforcing conscription in my part of the UK, WW3 would be the last thing I'd be worried about, as there would be war right here on my doorstep.

Newmetoday · 04/01/2020 22:04

Women want equal opportunities so we’d have to cope

SimonJT · 04/01/2020 22:04

I’m male, 31 and fairly physically fit, so I fit those bits, however I have type one diabetes, not particularly convenient in war!

Mounty87 · 04/01/2020 22:04

I’d be a conscientious objector!

LuluJakey1 · 04/01/2020 22:06

I would volunteer to do something though. Not sure what they would want these days as war would be so different. I am fine with blood and medical things, good organiser, strategic thinker, ironer, can cook, good driver, can see routes through problems, am direct and very resilient. If any of that was of any use, I would be up for doing what I could.

SpeedofaSloth · 04/01/2020 22:06

Nope, I'd be hopelessly out of my depth.

LuluJakey1 · 04/01/2020 22:08

DH is too lardy these days. It would be over by the time they got him into any shape.

MissChananderlerbong · 04/01/2020 22:10

bauble that's very kind, thank you! We did meet in the RAF, our eyes met across the Mess Bar one night. He reminded me of Prince Harry Grin (he's tall and ginger and was wearing a flying suit)

MissChananderlerbong · 04/01/2020 22:12

Oh and to everyone on here thinking they'd be no good, most wars are won on the 'back room's people... wars need good administration, HR, infrastructure, supply/logistics, medical services, catering, procurement, intelligence... by the sounds there's plenty of skill here!
The running around with a gun bit is a very small part of a military effort

TrainspottingWelsh · 04/01/2020 22:12

Fitness wise I'd be fine. I've not ran since forced athletics at school but I'm fairly fit so reckon I'd manage, and presumably anyone healthy would rapidly get fitter.

The whole mud/ tents/ outdoor stuff is my thing anyway, so the far more unpleasant version in army life would be easy enough to cope with. And I'm an adrenaline junkie with little fear, so would probably cope in the face of danger.

However I don't take direct orders well at all if they are pointless, and certainly wouldn't cope well with all the yes sir/ no sir and polishing boots stuff, so I'd probably be shot for insubordination.

And of course I'm no more likely to cope with the reality of being in combat, away from loved ones etc anymore than anyone else.

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2020 22:16

Physically no I couldn’t cope, my back and knees are Knackered and I’m fat and unfit
But I would have no issue with killing anyone who was trying to kill me so physiologically I think I would be fine

Guessing you don't know what nuclear weapons are, op.

ironicname · 04/01/2020 22:18

I don't think that modern day war is so dependent upon boots on the ground. I have absolutely nothing to offer the Army, RAF or Navy. I could take in an evacuee or two, but again - I don't think that will be required.

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/01/2020 22:19

When they conscript people they send them to boot camp to get fit and train for a month to six weeks before sending them to the front. They are not rejected from initial conscription for failing physical fitness tests (running, push ups etc). If you are really bad, you can fail out of boot camp but more often than not, they’ll just assign you to a support function like driving or cooking. The only thing you have to pass to be conscripted is a medical exam. And depending how much canon fodder they need, it may not be that stringent.

I’m too old, but I’d volunteer and go if they’d have me. This is assuming it was a moral war....

SapphireSeptember · 04/01/2020 22:19
  1. I'd be useless. Overweight, unfit (although I can lift heavy things,) ASD, terrible eyesight and mental health issues.
  2. I'd refuse anyway. They can put me in prison all they like, I'm not going to war.
Dogsaresomucheasier · 04/01/2020 22:19

Not fit enough to be useful in the field, likely to be a conscientious objector

KnowBetterDoBetter · 04/01/2020 22:22

No offence to anyone on the thread btw, one of my best friends is a nurse in the Army and she loves it, and I love her. I've just been reading a lot lately about civilian impact in the M.E over the past couple of decades and it's just horrific. There wasn't any need for the Iraq war to happen. It made things worse for everyone. This isn't the soldiers' fault, obviously. And if it was a situation like WW1 or WW2 where we were actually at risk of getting bombed or dying, then maybe I'd feel differently. But this current situation is just absolute bullshit, and if our PM has anything about him, he'll tell Trump that we're staying well out of it.

MissChananderlerbong · 04/01/2020 22:24

know I can assure you British rules of engagement do not allow collateral these days , at all. Zero tolerance.
The targeting cycle includes a lawyer now and NO civilian deaths are tolerated for anything. That's British ROE anyway. (I cant speak for other countries I dont have experience of that).
Also I was in the forces, many of my friends were, none of us have PTSD.
Some do, but it's no where near the levels people think (I was a welfare officer so saw the cases).

Smoothyloopy · 04/01/2020 22:26

If they need me we're already fucked!

exLtEveDallas · 04/01/2020 22:27

Well they’d go for Reservists first, then out of age reservists before civilians, so I reckon it would be pretty much all over by then.

DH and I would be in the first wave. He’d be absolutely fine, I’d struggle. But it’s amazing what you can do when you’ve got no choice!

PlanDeRaccordement · 04/01/2020 22:27

^If there was a women-only army I reckon we'd all pull together to protect each other and limit harm to ourselves and the enemy as much as possible.

There have been really good documentaries done on the women’s combat units of Kurds who fought ISIS. If they surrendered to ISIS, they’d be made sex slaves under the caliphate laws. Sometimes you have to kill an enemy to preserve your rights and freedom.
