Going to book a city break for this year.
Where would you recommend and why?
The only city breaks I've been on before are Rome and Barcelona

I really loved Copenhagen. Plenty of sights, Gorgeous food. Tivoli gardens! Friendly people.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 04/01/2020 13:52

Vienna is fabulous - everything within walking distance except for the Schonbrunn Palace. Lovely people, lovely food and everything is so clean!

Prague

We are looking at Budapest. I loved the hotsprings in Iceland, and Budapest is full of them. I've been watching some of those '48 hrs in ....' by travel man Richard Ayoade to help us decide.

Paris ... I loved the city! So much to see, beautiful buildings, great food and wine. We walked almost everywhere, even in the middle of winter. A boat trip down the Seine is lovely. Eating crepes on the street ... Grin

Dubrovnik. The airport is modern, 30 minutes from the old town.
Fantastic views.
Lots to see and do, including boat trips, walks, Game if Thrones tours etc.
You can also hop on a smaller boat and head to Cavtat, across from Dubrovnik - in fact I’d recommend staying there and just hopping on the water bus to Dubrovnik.

Athens

Depends what you're into and what time of year probably

PlomBear · 04/01/2020 14:29

Berlin.

I second Dubrovnik. Take a daytrip to Montenegro too- absolutely beautiful scenery

Paris is one of my favourite cities too and I really enjoyed Geneva. Geneva is small and you can see pretty much everything in 2 days

Malaga

We did a bit of a tour last summer. Budapest was my favourite - fabulous nightlife - followed by Munich, which was a surprise.

Mamabear88 · 04/01/2020 14:48

Ljubljana in Slovenia. It is so nice. Not too far to fly from the UK, cheap when you get there, friendly people and small city even though it's the capital so you can literally walk from one side to the other in ten minutes. It's a great base for day trips to the coast or the lakes / mountains, in particular Lake Bled which is stunning.

Wendyasbury · 04/01/2020 15:16

Watching this too! I'm also looking for recommendations, something with a centre not too spread out so we can walk everywhere, good food, nice people. A close airport and good transport links would be great too.

Ithinkwerealonenowtiffany · 04/01/2020 15:32

Watching too. 6 of us hoping to go April/May. Ideally cheap when we get there.

hopeishere · 04/01/2020 15:44

We went to Stockholm and liked it. And Amsterdam. Looking at Oslo for this year.

Some interesting suggestions here.

latheritup · 04/01/2020 15:44

Florence!

AdaColeman · 04/01/2020 15:52

Krakow stunningly beautiful old town, fascinating Jewish quarter, loads of art and history, wonderful hotels and restaurants, interesting cuisine, very friendly people, easy to walk around.

Deadringer · 04/01/2020 15:53

Paris is a must see imo

LilyJade · 04/01/2020 16:18

Went to Kraków in November, loved it & will be going back.
My sister recommends Palma (Mallorca).

TravellingSpoon · 04/01/2020 16:21

Milan. Its an amazing city and easy to get the train up to the lakes.
Berlin is my favourite city, but I also love budapest and it was so cheap to eat.

thunderthighsohwoe · 04/01/2020 16:24

Dubrovnik is GORGEOUS. I’ve been to many European cities and Dubrovnik wins hands down for me every time.

Don’t go for a city break in the heat of summer though (a beach holiday in Cavtat with a visit to Dubrovnik would be ok), the walls keep the heat in the city and it’s stifling.

Costacoffeeplease · 04/01/2020 16:24

Lisbon. Very compact, good transport - tram, bus and underground. Close to Sintra and cascais/Estoril. Very reasonable, lots to do and see and great food

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2020 16:26

Munich, Nuremberg, Seville, Cadiz, Faro, Lisbon

ThePurpleMoose · 04/01/2020 16:29

Amsterdam is fab if you like museums and you can easily get out to places like the tulip fields, a castle you take a boat ride to etc.

The iAmsterdam card gets you into loads of places for one price and you can get it for 24/48/72/96 hours depending on how long you're there. It also has a boat tour and public transport around the city included.

Eating out is a little on the pricey side but you can find reasonable places.

As a PP said, watch Travel Man for ideas - it's how we chose Amsterdam!
