Going to book a city break for this year.
Where would you recommend and why?
The only city breaks I've been on before are Rome and Barcelona

Did Athens (loved it) Prague (loved it), Berlin (meh) and Vienna (loved it), Oslo (eye wateringly expensive) Budapest (loved it) , Milan and Venice (quirky but busy) last year.

Athens and Milan were my favourites.

Got Florence, German tour - including Dresden, Leipzig, Nuremberg and Munich, Bucharest, Bratislava, Krakow and Dubrovnik for this year!!! Love a city break.

Amsterdam. So easy to get to....
Berlin is lovely too.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I now have a list of places I need to go.
I think we'll try Budapest first, it looks amazing with plenty to see.

Loved Porto. Easy access from the airport on the metro, compact so it's easy to walk around, plenty of history, plus there's all the port producers along the river bank to do port tasting!

I took my 6 year old to Paris and at was fabulous- so much to do. There is a lovely set of cards you can buy for kids that show each attraction in a kids friendly way and they can then choose what they want to see. The set also route plans for you and tells you the closest metro stations. I bought them on amazon. I Also did Copenhagen with the kids and they loved it. Tivoli was a huge hit and the museums are great. Just don't take them to Christiana like is did (slaps own forehead). Get the train across to Malmo too- worth it for some meatballs and your 6 yr old will love the idea.

Berlin is big but there is a load to do with little ones- and everyone is super helpful. Also, Stockholm is marvellous and some of the museums there are great but it would be better to go in the spring with the kids- maybe April. Dubrovnik is a delight- there's also the beach element which is lovely and I agree with heading to one of the islands. The only downside is how busy it gets from the cruise liners. My kids had a ball their too however. The aquarium is worth a visit. We did Prague this year and it's lovely but is maybe better for when they're older. Vienna could be fun with younger kids I think too as the museums are fantastic too. I was in Tallinn a few months ago and it's a nice size to explore with wee ones. If you're feeling brave then you could get the ferry over to Helsinki for the day. It's expensive however. Tallinn was lovely and the food was fab. Worth a visit.

Hope this helps.

Amsterdam for the Night Watch, Reykjavik for the scenery, Paris because it's Paris.

PurBal · 05/01/2020 09:12

I'm surprised to not have seen Amsterdam more often above. It is a fantastic city for a short city break in terms of size, things to do, atmosphere.

I'd also add Barcelona, Vienna, and Berlin. I'd avoid Paris now with the strikes on.

Krakow in Poland is beautiful, cheap too, food is utterly to die for, the architecture is beautiful...loved it

surlycurly · 05/01/2020 09:26

Amsterdam is lovely. I think older kids would get more out of it however. Same with krakow and Lisbon.

ExtraneousDetail · 05/01/2020 09:31

Florence. My favourite place.
Lots to do there and the city is small enough to easily walk around.

loopyloo12 · 05/01/2020 09:56

Venice is lovely

Ooooh I've been thinking of a weekend city break in Feb. This thread is great!

On my list are Lisbon, Seville, Budapest. Not sure which to pick!

username198372 · 05/01/2020 10:09

Amsterdam

surlycurly · 05/01/2020 13:08

Budapest is lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Bratislava is also a lovely wee place- I liked it there too.

Groovee · 05/01/2020 13:11

Budapest was lovely. I want to do krakow next.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/01/2020 14:38

Another vote for Krakow - for a city break it's got the lot, and if money counts you can eat out without even needing to look at the prices

surlycurly · 05/01/2020 14:39

I had some of the best food I've eaten in krakow. Tallinn is a foodie heaven too.

Wendyasbury · 05/01/2020 18:52

What kind of food do they do in Krakow.

Branleuse · 05/01/2020 19:01

PIEROGI

Eat all the pierogi.

everyonebutme · 05/01/2020 19:06

Iceland (I know it's not a city but you can do the city and then take some tours out), Barcelona, Budapest, Prague, Amsterdam, Nice have been some of my favourites.

surlycurly · 05/01/2020 20:25

Al the food is good! We are some great fish, caviar, borsch, pancakes, rabbit, sausages. Various types of peasant style food up to higher end meals. All delicious!

CottonSock · 05/01/2020 21:24

I had the most amazing meal of my life in Krakow. You could basically have anything you wanted, all inclusive from fish counter etc. I only realised half way that it also included wine. Didn't seem possible for the price.

Mylittlepony374 · 05/01/2020 21:28

Budapest. My favourite city in Europe so far. Also recently did Paris with two toddlers and had a great time. Very easy to walk around/ bus around with buggy's.
