Help me choose a new washing machine!

My washing machine has broken and I’m weighing up whether to buy a new one or try to get it repaired. My gut feeling is that a repair will be too costly as it’s out of warranty. It’s a Bosch one and has lasted about 6 years. If I buy a new one, which one shall I go for? Cost will be a main factor this close to Christmas expenditure but equally I want a decent one. Help me MNetters!

Samsung Ecobubble has a 5 year warranty. Or at least it did when I bought one. I took that as a good sign. It has a good range of programmes too.

I bought a John Lewis one, and it had been OK.

I mourn the days of hot fill washing machines tbh. My mate just bought a miele. She loves it but for the fact the cycles are so long.

I'd consider drum capacity. And whether it beeps incessantly when it finishes (my last bosch, hated it for this reason!). I like a machine where I can adjust the temperature of most cycles. And spins.

I'd avoid hotpoint. I've had a couple of them over the years and they're invariably been shit.

The Samsung ones do have 5 year warranties which is good but so many reviews (not just the Samsung ones) mention how long the programmes are these days. It is frustrating.

DD bought me a new Bosch last year - I think it was £300. Our previous Bosch predated our living here (16 years). The cycles are great - we tend to use the superquick which is 30 minutes for most washes. I would definitely recommend it.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 03/01/2020 12:58

It does beep when it's finished though!

TheFairyCaravan · 03/01/2020 13:06

I've got a Bosch similar to this one. There's a button on it so you can reduce the time of the program. I do most washes on a 40 degree Easy Care wash, press the speed button so it takes 59 minutes.

It does beep at the end but there's a way to turn that off. I've done that because it was driving me mad.

What’s the problem with your machine? It may be just a small repair. My new Hoover is rubbish the 1400 spin is only for the long hot washes & the spin only still leaves washing too wet so my tumble dryer is taking forever to dry the clothes.

lisag1969 · 03/01/2020 13:29

Depending the budget. I have a Miele now and love it.
But I have also had Bosch and Zanussi
and loved them both. I used to have a thing about washing machines. Used to buy one every 3 years 🙈.
Don't buy hotpoint or whirlpool, keep going on fire.
Hoover: are rubbish.
Samsung: very loud sound like they are going to take off.
Hope this helps a little. X

I have a Beko. 5 years in April and is on at least 3 times every day.
Only thing to have been replaced was a door seal for £20 last year.

Guineapig456 · 03/01/2020 13:39

Lots of ideas. Thanks everyone. I’m tempted to stick with Bosch as I’m most familiar with them. Would love a Miele but they’re so expensive.

I have a Samsung ecobubble and don't find the cycles too long. I tend to keep it on a general wash that takes 1hr 03 mins, it then plays me a tune to tell me it's done.

As a PP said, the spin-only speed is vital. 1400 and above because I’ve found (from personal, unscientific research Wink) that every 600rpm cuts the drying time by half.
In the last 10 years I’ve had an LG washer-Steam Dryer (so noisy and the steam wrecked the clothes while still leaving them damp ) a Candy (lasted 6 months) a Whirlpool Vertical (bad design led to a rusty lid and mouldy powder dispenser ) and currently have a Bosch Front Loader which takes forever.

In the same time I’ve also had a basic unbranded 1800rpm spin dryer which I love. Everything goes through it, especially hand washed stuff and it saves time, money and the environment since the water is extracted by spinning rather than heating or condensing. They even make 2400rpm models, so when this one breaks I know that I’m getting!

I also have a tumble dryer that gets used about 20 times a year. I could live without it but I have the space...

I loves my Grundig one. Does a 40 minute full wash. Currys stock them. Really good.
