How do you say it out loud?

OP posts:
MissisBee · 02/01/2020 16:48

Twenty twenty

Ceramique · 02/01/2020 17:44

Does anyone say two thousand and twenty?

OP posts:
FadedRed · 02/01/2020 17:47

Twenty twenty - we didn’t used to say “Nineteen hundred and whatever year ” or “One thousand, nine hundred and whatever year” (well I certainly didn’t Grin)

PotteringAlong · 02/01/2020 17:48

No, I didn’t say one thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine, I said nineteen ninety.

It’s twenty twenty.

Ceramique · 02/01/2020 17:50

2009?
2010?
2011?

Batshittery · 02/01/2020 17:50

Another twenty twenty

Batshittery · 02/01/2020 17:51

Twenty ten, twenty eleven - but I didn't say twenty onine Grin

ParkheadParadise · 02/01/2020 17:52

I think I say two thousand and twenty.
I'm now walking about saying it out loud😂😂.

Ceramique · 02/01/2020 18:20

I'm wondering if there's a difference between UK and US English for this. I wonder if we said two thousand and ten/eleven etc. up until the 2012 Olympics

Twenty twenty

2009? Two thousand and nine
2010? Twenty ten
2011? Twenty eleven

😄

Ceramique · 02/01/2020 20:54

Also thinking about the mix up with the Miss Universe election two thousand fifteen (US).

OP posts:
DrMadelineMaxwell · 02/01/2020 21:55

I said 'two thousand' and whatever for all the single and teen numbers, but now it's 2020 I'm saying twenty twenty.

Ceramique · 10/01/2020 11:55

Does anyone say twenty oh nine?

OP posts:
Swinesinsleepingbags · 10/01/2020 11:59

No coz that sounds daft!

I think people say what sounds easy on the ear, rolls together easily so two thousand and nine, twenty 10 make sense. Twenty 0 nine is too much of a mouthful

Swinesinsleepingbags · 10/01/2020 11:59

And actually should be twenty zero nine which sounds just as odd.

Ceramique · 10/01/2020 19:34

I agree, but have been told that IABU and that it's perfectly fine (English teachers in France telling me this).

Ceramique · 10/01/2020 19:55

Is there anyone here who has heard a native speaker (anywhere English is an official language) say twenty oh nine?

OP posts:
allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/01/2020 19:58

I just said "Oh 9" etc. until 2010, the it became "twenty-ten".

Wheresthebiffer2 · 10/01/2020 20:00

nope. i'd say the year my DC was born was eg. Two thousand and five, or Two thousand and Nine.

it was "the year two thousand" then "two thousand and one...."

until twenty ten.

Oblomov20 · 10/01/2020 20:01

Two thousand and nine.
Twenty twenty.

coconuttelegraph · 10/01/2020 20:02

I'm sure I've heard people say twenty oh 8 etc, I wouldn't say it but I'm sure some do

Singinghollybob · 10/01/2020 20:06

I've said two thousand and ..... up to now when I've changed to saying twenty twenty

LittleBearPad · 10/01/2020 20:13

I would say ‘19 oh 6’ though if talking about that year but definitely two thousand and six

There’s no logic Grin

Ginger1982 · 10/01/2020 20:19

Americans appear to say 'two thousand twelve' rather than 'two thousand and twelve.'
