Will I be able to do this? I’m panicking!

I’m old. Mid 50’s old. The last five years have seen big changes in my life. My dh died, two of my four dc have left home, a third is planning on leaving soon, and my youngest has just got his first girlfriend.

So I decided I needed to ring the changes somehow. Centuries ago I got a degree but for most of the last thirty years I’ve either been a sahm or been my Dh’s carer. I decided I needed a job but of course, with my background, that’s much easier said than done!

Somehow I’ve got myself an interview at a local club and now I’m petrified that (if I do somehow get the job) I won’t be able to do it. I’ve never worked behind a bar, never used a till. Can I do this?! Help!

Of course you can do it! Embrace the opportunity xx

LarkDescending · 01/01/2020 11:57

Of course you can! And mid-50s is not old. If it is, I am nearly old.

Best of luck with this new opportunity - hope your next chapter is a good one.

Yorkshiremum17 · 01/01/2020 11:59

In short, yes,yes you can! Good on you for having a go.

Every body had to start somewhere, don't be afraid to ask questions if you're not sure. It's just a matter o f learning where things are, both on the till and on the shelves. Once you know that you've got it cracked 😀

Deedadada · 01/01/2020 12:01

Go for it! When's your interview?

Notsure94 · 01/01/2020 12:02

If you can raise four kids you can work a till! Grin try to think of the feelings as excitement not panic. Good luck!

scattercushion17 · 01/01/2020 12:02

Echoing PP to say go for it!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/01/2020 12:02

Go for it. Course you can!

cakeandchampagne · 01/01/2020 12:04

Of course you can do this! It is a variation of the people skills & money skills you already have!

GeorgeTheFirst · 01/01/2020 12:06

If my 18 yo can do it you definitely can. Go for it.

Owem · 01/01/2020 12:11

Oh thank you so much for being fab confidence boosters :).

My interview is tomorrow.

I work at a local club (working mens club) and started as a ‘back to work after kids’ job with no bar experience. I’m still there 3 years later and absolutely love it. Most of the shifts are pretty slow paced so was the perfect opportunity to gain experience while you’re still getting to grips with it and they built me up to busier shifts.

Go for it, be yourself and be prepared to have a laugh with the locals! Good luck!!

pemberleypearl · 01/01/2020 12:14

You can do it. And honestly a till isn't that hard - you'll get training anyway. You will be ace.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/01/2020 12:27

You can do it!

Give yourself time, don't be harsh on yourself if it takes a while and you're not perfect after day one!

BTW 50 is not old, please change that mindset!

ginghamtablecloths · 01/01/2020 12:38

They wouldn't have offered an interview if they thought that you weren't capable. You can be trained to use a till etc.

Some firms like the life experience that a mature person can bring to the job. Mid-fifties isn't old. Good luck.

81Byerley · 01/01/2020 12:41

Good luck for your interview! They may like the fact that they can train you in the way they like to work, and you won't be saying "We didn't do it like that in my last job".

GinandGingerBeer · 01/01/2020 12:42

Think of it this way, nobody knows how to pull a pint or operate a till until their first day in a job when someone shows them (unless they were raised in a pub! Grin)
You'll be fine, the qualities they're looking for a re someone who is reliable, hard working and personable. That can't be taught, the pint pulling can.
Good luck 🍻

Ah thank you all so much - just what I needed to hear! I will report back on how it goes. Thanks again Flowers

I got offered the job :). Thank you for the words of encouragement. Now all I have to do is learn - well, everything!

Amazing!! Well done!

You'll have a lot of fun Grin

ivykaty44 · 02/01/2020 21:22

You’ll have a lot of fun, are you working evenings?
Congratulations 🥳

Owem · 02/01/2020 21:45

Ah thank you!

She more or less said I could choose how many hours I wanted. So I’ve gone for part time day shifts at first until I feel more confident for the (presumably) busier evening shifts.

I can’t say how much of a boost this thread gave me Flowers.

I never thought I’d be starting the new decade this way! Hope all of you have had similarly positive starts to 2020.

Many congratulations - the start of a positive chapter indeed! If you did this just think what else you could do... the world is yours OP!

Emmelina · 03/01/2020 00:05

You’d be surprised how many transferable skills you have from being Mum/carer. I’ve every confidence in you!

Horsemad · 03/01/2020 00:19

Great post OP! 🙂
