Ideal are good. Worcester overrated apparently

Willow4987 · 31/12/2019 13:40

We had an ideal one at our last house and it was good!

The plumber we had recommended it over Worcester

SPARKLYSTARSHINESBRIGHT · 31/12/2019 13:42

We had Ideal, recommended by our plumber, good after sales help too.

We wanted a Worcester as we though it was the best. Our gas man (and friend) said they are a nightmare for parts if they break down and recommend a Baxi instead

Hercules12 · 31/12/2019 13:48

we had an ideal and after a lot of research got a Worcester. no regrets and we've had it serviced regularly with a free call out as under warranty to fix something.

misspiggy19 · 31/12/2019 13:51

I know several people with Ideal boilers- they are very happy with theirs plus they come with long warranties.

Corneysjazzband · 31/12/2019 13:52

Can I ask what sort of prices they are? I may be facing replacing a boiler in the very near future.

redwoodmazza · 31/12/2019 13:53

We had a Worcester which our plumber recommended.

MyKingdomForBrie · 31/12/2019 13:56

We had an ideal which has just been replaced like for like, it was about 25 years old before the fan finally gave up!

MyKingdomForBrie · 31/12/2019 13:57

@Corneysjazzband the boiler itself was about £700 then about 1k on top for the fitting work, including removal and disposal of the old one.

betternamechangeforthisone · 31/12/2019 13:57

We went with Ideal after asking him to price up a WB and the Ideal. I asked him what he’d put in his house if it was him and he said the Ideal. Really pleased with it so far!

SamsMumsCateracts · 31/12/2019 13:57

We've had our Baxi combs boiler for nearly 15 years. Touch wood it's never had a single issue, not one. It's serviced yearly, which I think is the most important factor with any boiler.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 31/12/2019 13:59

Don't go with Baxi. Installer will make more profit from a cheaper boiler (& possibly on an incentive to install more of a particular make). The others mentioned are made to a higher standard. Make sure it is installed by a Gas Safe engineer & get it serviced annually to maintain maximum efficiency, & catch any possible problems earlier. Worcester are highly recommended for their oil boilers, so cannot see that they wouldn't be as good for gas. Worcester will be slightly more expensive but for something which you will rely on for years it is worth paying just that bit more (imho).

MyDcAreMarvel · 31/12/2019 14:00

@Corneysjazzband our quote:

quotes for boiler, flue, system magnetic filter, pipework, system chemicals & labour.
(The manufacturers warranty for each boiler is for parts & Labour. )

Baxi 30kw
£1,540
(10 years warranty)

Ideal 30kw
£1,680
(10 years warranty)

Worcester 30kw
£1,890
(5 year warranty

I have valiant. Could not have worcester due to pipe sizes and this was recommended instead.

MyDcAreMarvel · 31/12/2019 14:02

Yes heard good things about valiant, that was t mentioned though and it’s an urgent job.

Our Baxi combi literally died after 15 years, the plumber kept it going until our kitchen refit, we went with Worcester Bosch, our plumber recommended bigger size than the one we had and we are very happy with it, as long as you use WB approved plumber and keep up with the services it comes with a 10 year guarantee.

Floralnomad · 31/12/2019 14:10

We have a Worcester, dh studied them all and decided it was between Worcester or Vaillant . My dsis needed one in a hurry when hers was condemned and has an ideal and she’s had quite a few minor issues with it . We’ve had no problems with ours and it’s 6 now .

fia101 · 31/12/2019 14:20

Previously had an ideal and it was rubbish. Broke down every year without fail. Had a homecare policy as knew I'd need someone to fix it.

After 10 years it failed completely (last year). Insurance policy would only give me another ideal (still had to pay £1200 fitting fee) but plumber said it should be better as ideal have overhauled their systems due to bad rep

itchity · 31/12/2019 14:24

We have a baxi for 2 years now and are very Hally with it.
Keep up the servicing and it has a long warranty.
They’re becoming much more popular.

Santasballsack · 31/12/2019 14:24

Gas engineers wife here. We fit baxi as standard.

TalbotAMan · 31/12/2019 14:25

We had an Alpha die last Christmas and the plumber recommended Vaillant. He said that Worcester started using plastic parts instead of metal ones a few years back and they aren't lasting. In a previous house we had a Worcester from 1991 which was still going strong when we sold it in 2007, but it looks like the new ones aren't as good.

PigletJohn · 31/12/2019 14:25

I'm not convinced it is a good sign that parts are widely available.

I have a Viessmann and I hear that parts are not widely stocked, and are usually despatched overnight. But since it's never needed any in 15 years, that doesn't trouble me at all.

If there were racks of spare parts in every high street, selling like hot cakes, that would trouble me.

In "Which," Worcester, Vaillant and Viessmann come out top.

Ideal and Baxi score lower.

Gasmen can never agree about anything. Some of them get favourable deals if they buy a lot of a particular make.

It is an advantage to have your boiler installed by one of the maker's Approved Installers. Often this results in a longer guarantee. They will also be more familiar with it. The maker's website may have a lookup or list for local installers.

MotherofPoodles · 31/12/2019 14:27

We run a business installing and fixing boilers etc and all the engineers without exception hate Worcester. Baxi and Ideal is what we recommend and they're cheaper and come with a better warranty. Worcester make the boilers really fiddly and lots of sharpe edges inside. It's a right of passage going to A and E for the new apprentices after they've worked in one.

We do get discounts on boilers and we are incentivised if we choose a certain boiler, but all the companies do this. There's a mark up on all parts usually about 20%. We don't fit boilers or parts we wouldn't recommend for price and quality.

powershowerforanhour · 31/12/2019 14:30

We got the shit Ferroli in our corner-cut new build (I think there is only one original working boiler left among the 20+ houses in the development 8 years after construction) replaced with a Weissman which is doing well.
