Boycott Marks and Spencer: "It'll upset the men"

Desiderata44 · 31/12/2019 11:46

Following me being barred from men's changing rooms/M&S's new genderfree changing rooms because "it'll upset the men", surely it's time we fought back and actually, definitively boycotted Marks and Spencer.

  • Steve Rowe, their CEO, has created a policy where men can go into women's changing rooms
  • They didn't consult with women, and they haven't consulted with their own staff
  • Not one woman has received a proper response to any of their emails and letters sent to M&S. They continue to refuse to address a single concern of women.

The contempt they are showing their primary market is working for them as long as we shop there. They won't care until their shareholders care.

There is one way to get them to reverse this mad decision: we, their main market, need to withdraw our custom.

Vacate M&S stores. It'll upset the men.

I'll boycott the feckers. Such little regard for women, from their weird "fashions" to their changing room policies.

ClairesKimono · 31/12/2019 12:02

I have been boycotting for a while. They seem to hate their core market and will go out of business soon. Entirely their own fault.

DrPimplePopper · 31/12/2019 12:09

I started boycotting when I read about it on here a while ago. I had a bank account with them which I closed and told them exactly why and received no response whatsoever. I cannot understand why a company is completely ignoring their main target audience's comfort and safety for the sake of pacifying what is (hopefully) the minority's whims.

I absolutely believe there should be safe spaces for all, including trans people. However I do not believe in removing women and children's safe and private spaces.

I’m in as are my daughters - a shop that disregards women’s safety & dignity won’t get our money.

Wonder if buying a single share would be worth it - do they listen to their shareholders?

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2019 13:35

Tbh boycotting won’t achieve anything, pocketing their stores might though

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2019 13:36

Picketting

IsadoraQuagmire · 31/12/2019 13:36

I'm already boycotting.

Singlenotsingle · 31/12/2019 13:38

I love their food, but not their clothes.

DickDewy · 31/12/2019 13:44

I got into a chat with the woman manning the changing room at my local M&S and she was completely unaware of any change in policy.

And for every customer upset by this, there will be another (like me) who doesn't really care or see an issue, or another who is happy that they appear to be inclusive. My 2 local M&S were absolutely rammed in the run up to Christmas.

Boycotting simply won't work imo. If enough people feel strongly, there has to be a better way.

Newmetoday · 31/12/2019 14:09

Not boycotting because I’m not bothered by it

bettybattenburg · 31/12/2019 14:10

So men can go in the women's changing rooms but women can't go in the men's changing rooms?

YourOpinionIsNoted · 31/12/2019 14:14

Already on it. Didn't buy any Xmas food in there even though earlier in the year I had planned to treat myself by getting some M&S stuff in. Didn't buy the cashmere jumper I'd seen for myself to wear at Xmas. Have found that M&Co's children's range is very similar to M&S in terms of style and slightly cheaper, so both dd's got their Christmas clothing from there instead.

Won't spend any money there again, ever.

I'm not a big m&s spender (I know some on here are) but businesses go bust all the time these days, and M&S won't be propped up by any of my money or my family's.

When they fold (and let's face it, they will, the department store is dying) I will be quietly gloating.

candycane22 · 31/12/2019 14:15

I am pretty sure transmen can use the men's. My cousin certainly does but he does look masculine despite being pre-op.

ExpletiveFairylighted · 31/12/2019 14:17

I just can't see a boycott making a difference. Nestle don't seem to suffer athough many have been boycotting for years.

TiffanyTrot · 31/12/2019 14:19

Won't be boycotting - love the food too much. Sorry!

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/12/2019 14:20

I must admit, I did miss buying my groceries in there, for Christmas, but not enough to go back to them. I won’t put my daughter at risk in their unisex toilets, just to validate men’s demands.

willloman · 31/12/2019 14:23

I'm bothered. Maybe an online petition? Have wondered why men's facilities are not part of this 'new deal'? Did you identify as a man when you attempted to use the change room?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 31/12/2019 14:24

Even if my boycotting M&S makes no difference to them financially, at least I can show support for women and girls. That’s more important that a poxy trolly of groceries and I can hold my head up, knowing I put my daughter’s rights first.

SerendipityJane · 31/12/2019 14:28

For some reason the idea of boycotting M&S in the current climate reminds me of the old joke about British Leyland having a work to rule and productivity increases Grin

I think M&S are headed for history whatever.

Desiderata44 · 31/12/2019 14:28

I'm as disgusted with Marks and Spencer institutional and private shareholders who are all keeping very quiet.

It needs spreading the word for every woman who doesn't want to endanger themselves or others, or vulnerable young girls getting changed in lingerie changing rooms, to stop all M&S purchases.

A fall in dividends via a fall in profits will work. Petitions don't have the same clout.

I was refused access because quote: It'll upset the men

OP posts:
NameChangeNugget · 31/12/2019 14:33

Doesn’t bother me

Whatsnewpussyhat · 31/12/2019 14:38

Why does "inclusive" always mean allowing men into female only spaces.

Singlenotsingle · 31/12/2019 15:29

Because women don't want to go into men's. Why would you?

Thesuzle · 31/12/2019 15:37

OOOh I’m game for a laugh
Due to meet a friend at M &S next Friday, I shall see if I can waltz into the men’s changing rooms and cause a row (hopefully)
