10yo boy stomach pain and vomiting at night/early morning

Posting here for traffic..

I can't ring my gp for an appt yet (if I ring at 8:30 I should get him seen today although the lines do get very busy).

My ds 10 has had stomach pain in the early hours of boxing day morning and again yesterday (the 30th) which led to vomiting twice both times. He was fine after though. Same again now (he hasn't been sick yet, dh lying beside him).

Any thoughts? I'm worried. And Dr Google has mentioned stomach cancer so talk me down please.

We had a bug like this a few weeks ago. It really threw me, and we did end up in a&e in the night because my 5yo was grey and writhing around in pain (after several days of vomiting). Obviously a&e was very busy and we were in for a long wait with a hysterical child who wouldn’t let me touch him. But it was just a bug after all..:

Waffles80 · 31/12/2019 08:27

It’s not even appropriate to go to the GP with, never mind A&E! Unless he gets a lot worse, develops temp / rash / really and pain, he just needs to be looked after at bome

I quite often don't get the bugs that ds and has.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 31/12/2019 08:28

Thanks Geoffrey.

I want the gp to check for obvious stomach issues. This isn't a bug, I'm sure of it.

@NeverTalksToStrangers phone and ask if you can drop off a stool sample if you're that sure. You'll have to wait a week for the results. Don't go to the doctors surgery please.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/12/2019 08:33

How could you possibly know it's not a mild bug?

JulietTango · 31/12/2019 08:34

My ds had appendicitis which presented like this.
He vomited randomly around 6 times over the course of a month before he developed the constant bad stomach ache, vomiting and temperature. So it isn't inconceivable it's appendicitis

hazeyjane · 31/12/2019 08:34

Is he constipated?
Does he suffer from reflux?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/12/2019 08:36

Exactly, IF it gets worse then get him seen.

marvelousways · 31/12/2019 08:39

ok, so this could be a bug - that is indeed the most likely thing.
But it could also be a problem with his appendix. When my dd had appendicitis the first indication was her vomiting, the proper pain set in a day later. But the pain was in a specific place and I knew what it was and it was a Saturday so we did indeed go to A&E and she was admitted and in surgery the next morning.
I would say GP is good first call, hope you can get an appointment.

TiffanyTrot · 31/12/2019 08:41

We now take kids to A & E do we, when they've been sick a couple of times with no other worrying symptoms? Mental.

Just see how he goes. But saying 'talk me down' and 'it might be stomach cancer' highlights your own anxiety by proxy. And how do we know what's wrong with him? We can only go on what might be in front of us with our own children.

I personally would be making sure he had fluids, was comfortable and eating sensibly if he wanted to for now. If I was concerned then I would make a doctors appointment

Mominatrix · 31/12/2019 08:42

If you are thinking appendicitis, A&E should be your first port of call as it can be a medical emergency. Do not wait for a GP appointment. Although, I am quite Hmm at you being certain that your son does not have a stomach bug but think that stomach cancer is a likely diagnosis in an otherwise healthy 10 year old boy.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 31/12/2019 08:44

Got an appt for first thing.

Of course it could be a bug, but I've never known a bug to present itself this way. And I'm not stupid.

He's not constipated. Just had v&d.

Got an appt for first thing.

Why!? The other poor people in the surgery don’t want to catch it!!

Why why why do people take their ill kids out and about like this!?

coffeeoclock · 31/12/2019 08:52

@NeverTalksToStrangers it's a stomach bug. Please don't take it to a doctors surgery. Ask for a phone appointment with GP if you're really that worried. Selfish.

Northernsoullover · 31/12/2019 08:54

Right, get off Google. Phone the GP. I think it is most likely Norovirus. However, I am not in your home. It may be appendicitis. It probably isn't. You need to speak to a PROFESSIONAL. Not us. Don't take him to the GP unless told to.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 31/12/2019 08:55

OP you say you're not stupid but you're willing to take your child with an (almost definite) bug to a surgery full of already ill people? Come on.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/12/2019 09:11

Don't take him to the GP, honestly what is wrong with you?! Definitely sounds like a bug now with V and D and he'll give it to the entire waiting room.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 31/12/2019 09:23

Waiting room was empty thanks.
Tonsillitis.
Thankfully not appendicitis.

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/12/2019 09:29

Goodness, you must live right next door to the surgery, that's fortunate.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 31/12/2019 09:29

I pretty much do, yes. About half a mile away.

OP posts:
hazeyjane · 31/12/2019 09:44

Glad you got an answer NeverTalksToStrangers.
Hope he feels better soon.

justdoityourself · 31/12/2019 09:56

Doubt it's norovirus, that causes constant d&v for days, not the odd vomit followed by feeling fine.

Mischance · 31/12/2019 10:00

I think you were wise to take him to GP. Children are often difficult to diagnose as they present with confusing symptoms. I would have been concerned about abdominal pain and vomiting that was relapsing and remitting rather than just full-on.
