Christmas Day Turkey off by now?

BrandoraPaithwaite · 30/12/2019 20:51

We've had a big piece of turkey breast leftover since Christmas Day. DP just made a pie and it tasted like the turkey was off to me. I spat it out, DP ate a massive piece and said it was delicious.

Would cooked turkey go off in 5 days? It was out on the side covered in foil overnight Christmas night then breast cut off and wrapped in foil on Boxing Day, travelled in car to ours (about 1hr 15mins) then in our fridge since then.

To avoid drip feed... Turkey was fresh from naice butcher, collected on 23rd, fridged, driven up to PILs on Christmas Eve, brined in sink overnight and cooked Xmas day. Was lovely on the day.

I wouldn’t risk it

Especially left on the side overnight...

crustycrab · 30/12/2019 20:53

God no

SwedishEdith · 30/12/2019 20:55

My eldest had the last on a sandwich today. Still alive (the child, not the turkey).

I should add... we ate the rest of our turkey yesterday and it was fine... but it was treated as in the link (and eaten on day 4)

rottiemum88 · 30/12/2019 20:55

Definitely wouldn't have eaten it today. Why did the pie have to be made 5 days after Christmas Day? Feel a bit sick just thinking about it 🤢

MaidenMotherCrone · 30/12/2019 20:56

Not after it spent the night in the sink followed by a night on the side.

LennyPugGoat · 30/12/2019 20:56

Shits ahoy

INeedNewShoes · 30/12/2019 20:57

Last day I happily eat turkey is the 29th and that’s if it has been properly refrigerated.

Ideally the meat should be taken off the bone and put in the fridge on Christmas Day.

It was different in the olden days pre central heating. Kitchens would have been a lot cooler overnight so not such a big deal leaving meat out on the side.

SoftSheen · 30/12/2019 20:58

No chance Shock

To be safe, you need to get cooked turkey into the fridge as soon as it has cooled down a bit (within a couple of hours), and then use it within two days, or three at a push. Or of course, just freeze it. Don't leave it out of the fridge all night!

Popcornalley · 30/12/2019 20:58

3 days for cooked meats.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 30/12/2019 20:59

DP and his mum are unbelievable about food storage. They leave things out and uncovered overnight all the time. I once threw away half a massive, gorgeous homemade fish pie because it had been left out by MIL all night and I knew if I didn't chuck it she'd give some of it to baby Dd while I was out.

I had a turkey sandwich yesterday. Am fine

Grinchly · 30/12/2019 21:00

It will be fine.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 30/12/2019 21:02

I am taking this thread as agreeing with me! Overall kind of.

There's tonnes of this pie still left and he's going to keep eating it over the next few days til it's gone! Also he's left it out, uncovered!

I binned the last of ours on Saturday evening and that was with it being kept as per the link in the earlier post . I wouldn’t have touched it at all after it had been left out overnight .

BrandoraPaithwaite · 30/12/2019 21:05

The leaving out overnight thing is bizarre. MIL is super houseproud and her house is spotless so it's not like they are just scruffs! I have tried to debate it with them and they just day that humans existed for thousands of years before they had fridges and didn't die out so IABU basically.

We finished our turkey yesterday. But it was dry brined in the fridge overnight on Christmas Eve rather than in the sink and it went into the fridge as soon as we’d carved off the meat for Christmas dinner having spent a few hours resting under foil and tea towels while we cooked he rest of the dinner. I wouldn’t have risked eating it at all if it was left out overnight after cooking. A big bird would been warm for a long time left out in foil overnight. I’d worry that it would have been dangerous to eat even on Boxing Day. Hope all is well and your DP isn’t ill.

HundredMilesAnHour · 30/12/2019 21:08

I had a turkey sandwich for lunch today and it was fine. I'll have more turkey tomorrow. The turkey was cooked on Christmas Eve (don't get me started, not my choice!) and has been in the fridge since then other than a 8 hour drive where it was in the boot of my car.

SabineSchmetterling · 30/12/2019 21:10

Actually I lie, we finished the turkey on Saturday.

goingtoneedabiggercar · 30/12/2019 21:10

We ate the last of ours today, cooked cooled and straight in the fridge though.

Tiredafterthisweek · 30/12/2019 21:15

We're eating the last of ours tonight in a curry and it smells and tastes perfectly fine BUT it's been refrigerated the whole time bar the couple of hours after it came out of the oven on Christmas Day at 3pm. I cannot imagine leaving anything out all night and eating it the next day let alone almost a week later 🤮

Shelley54 · 30/12/2019 21:15

I'm still eating mine but it was cooked on Boxing Day. Once it had cooled it was put in the fridge in foil and it's been coming out to be served. Tonight's pie (with Boxing Day ham) will be finished tomorrow then it's all gone.

I wouldn't be eating yours. Too long on the side.

Adviceplease1234 · 30/12/2019 21:22

Not a chance if he had been left out of the fridge! I only keep cooked meat for 3 days tops anyway

MyGirlDaisy · 30/12/2019 22:43

I wouldn’t eat it! I cooked ours Christmas Day, cooled and refrigerated within a few hours, and the small amount left over after Friday was only eaten by the dogs I am afraid. I am always surprised that people eat it a week later and are fine, I just know if I did that I would get ill.

nocoolnamesleft · 30/12/2019 22:45

I finished mine yesterday. In the (running at 2 degrees) fridge as soon as it was cool. In the intervening period only out long enough to cut slices for that day. Don't think I'd have pushed it until today.
