Christmas Day Turkey off by now?

BrandoraPaithwaite · 30/12/2019 20:51

We've had a big piece of turkey breast leftover since Christmas Day. DP just made a pie and it tasted like the turkey was off to me. I spat it out, DP ate a massive piece and said it was delicious.

Would cooked turkey go off in 5 days? It was out on the side covered in foil overnight Christmas night then breast cut off and wrapped in foil on Boxing Day, travelled in car to ours (about 1hr 15mins) then in our fridge since then.

To avoid drip feed... Turkey was fresh from naice butcher, collected on 23rd, fridged, driven up to PILs on Christmas Eve, brined in sink overnight and cooked Xmas day. Was lovely on the day.

too funny fling it out and order a munchy box lol

Swisskit · 30/12/2019 22:46

Well I've just eaten reheated turkey again tonight. Not dead yet, but will check again in the morning Grin

ODFOkaren · 30/12/2019 22:50

Fun fact:

My mother in law leaves the turkey in the oven and they are still hacking bits off and eating it on New Year’s Day.

She cooks a chicken casserole each Sunday too which she leave on the hob for 5 days reheating the whole thing every time someone wants a bowl.

I can’t believe they aren’t dead yet.

Yet she will sore boxes of mince pies (open and unopened) in the fucking fridge Confused

cricketmum84 · 30/12/2019 22:54

No I wouldn't risk it. I think that's too long especially as it was put all night.

In future portion it up and freeze!

NearlyOutedMyself · 30/12/2019 22:55

I wouldn't eat it. I think that our turkey was finished on Saturday but any remaining would have been binned after that.

managedmis · 30/12/2019 22:55

It's like a week ago! Shock

Winterdaysarehere · 30/12/2019 22:58

I always have mine jointed. Freeze wings and legs. Dh made turkey pie last night with a leg. Absolutely delicious.

ICouldHaveTinsillitis · 30/12/2019 22:58

We had frozen turkey, defrosting in cool utility room since 23rd.
Roasted Xmas Day. Put in fridge once cool. We've eaten it every day since then, having stripped the meat off the bone on 27th.

DH made a curry yesterday - most of which is now in the freezer! - and I used the last of it for a risotto tonight (yum).

If it tasted off though, I'd ditch it immediately.

BentNeckLady · 30/12/2019 23:01

I wouldn’t risk it. Mine was fed to the foxes 2 days ago.

@ODFOkaren that is properly gross Envy

AppropriateAdult · 30/12/2019 23:02

I ate the last of ours tonight. Gave it a good sniff beforehand but it both smelled and looked perfectly fine, and it tasted great. It’s been in the fridge since Christmas Day, though...

NigellaAwesome · 30/12/2019 23:02

I had some tonight, and the very last of it will be eaten tomorrow.

But we stripped the bird as soon as it was cool and put in the fridge straight away.

ElloBrian · 30/12/2019 23:04

I am pretty relaxed about food hygiene in general but this would be beyond even my boundaries, I’m afraid.

And as for this -

My mother in law leaves the turkey in the oven and they are still hacking bits off and eating it on New Year’s Day.

I can’t even .... Xmas Confused

AChickenCalledDaal · 30/12/2019 23:08

It's true that people used to leave meat out on the side without coming to too much harm. But they also didn't have central heating, so the kitchen was cold most of the time.

Three days tops for cold meat. And I'm generally quite relaxed about use by dates etc.

bellanotte22 · 30/12/2019 23:09

My parents do the leaving out the Turkey thing too. Days on end on a bloody shelf. Cast iron stomachs Confused We eat beef now!

EnidButton · 30/12/2019 23:10

That's a lot of temperature changes in a week. I wouldn't personally.

If it had been in the fridge right up until preparing and cooking on the day then back in the fridge as soon as it was cool enough and kept there, then maybe, but even then it's been a week so it would need a good sniff first.

ThunderboltandLightning · 30/12/2019 23:11

A large turkey probably takes most of the night to cool down anyway before it is suitable to be put in a fridge. If then stored in the fridge, it should easily last to New Year. After all, if you buy cooked chicken from the supermarket, it will have up to a week's shelf life, and that is with the delay for packing and shipping.

Our kitchen is warm (there is an Aga) and regularly leave things to cool overnight. None of us ever get ill.

BrandoraPaithwaite · 30/12/2019 23:21

I will report back whether DP gets ill. He probably won't, as he points out he's grown up with this approach to food storage including most Christmases and not ever been poisoned.

However I can report it tasted wrong.

We're still eating our turkey.
It was cooked and cooled then all the meat was sliced and removed from thre carcass.

It was then immediately covered and placed in the fridge, where it's been since, except for a few secs to remove slices for meals.

Today I used the carcass and the last few slices of turkey meat to make a broth/soup, which we've eaten tonight and will finish tomorrow for lunch. What's left is already in the fridge ready for tomorrow's lunch though.

We do this every year, for the past 20 years (at least), and we've never been ill. At the most the turkey lasts us a week, and again we've never been ill.

We always buy fresh (free range) on 24th Dec, and remove from the fridge 1 hour before cooking, then refrigerated as soon as it's been carved for the table.

Knowhowufeel · 30/12/2019 23:24

We always go by smell, look and taste to decide whether something is off or not, and it's always worked for us.

ColdCottage · 30/12/2019 23:28

We had the left over turkey and goose in sandwiches tonight. I wouldn't have eaten it if it had been left on the side overnight after cooking. Meat has been chilled since Christmas Day.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 31/12/2019 00:00

Naice butcher [eyeroll]

BastardGoDarkly · 31/12/2019 00:14

Hes going to leave the (already funny tasting) pue out for a couple more days, and keep eating it!? ShockEnvy

Horsemad · 31/12/2019 00:23

OMG, this brings back memories. I once ate leftover turkey on New Year's Eve - I was so so sick that night whilst out celebrating. Really thought I was dying!

I only keep any cooked meat for 2 days now. Any longer and it's turfed out.

DrivingMsCrazy · 31/12/2019 00:42

He probably does have a cast iron stomach if he's been raised this way OP so he may be fine - doesn't mean you have to chance it tho. I think you're very wise to refuse!

We finished our turkey crown meat on Sat and I wouldn't have probably gone beyond that 3 day limit anyway. DH might have given it to Sun if it still smelled fine, but I've had proper food poisoning (abroad) before now and won't risk it again. Hideous experience. (And yes ours was in the fridge after cooling enough on Xmas day.)
