Should I spend NYE with random family I met in pub?

About a week ago I went to the pub by myself in the evening to read a paper and have a drink. A drunk and merry guy started to chat to me and invited me to join the table with his wife and extended family. They were very nice. Another drunk and merry guy who was part of this family asked me what I was doing for NYE and when I said 'nothing' he invited me to their NYE party. A wife took my phone number and said they really mean it and the whole street join this party.

I would like to go. I am fairly new in town and could do with meeting new people and you never know, I might make a new friend or at least have a nice night. But it is weird to go being as I don't really know them and they were drunk (or at least the guy who invited me was). I spent about 90mins chatting to them in the pub and they invited me to the party at the end before they left. Should I go?

Yes, give it a go! As long as you have an escape plan if it all goes pear shaped Grin

Newdilemma · 30/12/2019 10:08

Apparently they go from house to house so it should be fairly simple to sneak away.

I guess I am worried that they might think 'oh no, not you! We were drunk, we never really meant it! How awkward!'

Why not! If it's a big party then there's likely to be people there that don't know each other anyway. Like you said, it will be a good chance to meet people and make new friends.

AtillatheHun · 30/12/2019 10:09

Go.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 30/12/2019 10:10

Do you know their names? If not, I'd not go Grin

BanningTheWordNaice · 30/12/2019 10:16

Honestly I’m the biggest scaredy cat and I’d do it - if they have invited the houses around you won’t stick out.

Newdilemma · 30/12/2019 10:28

Thehumans I know their family name and one person's first name!

Let us know how it goes! Hope it's great fun.

Do it! When I moved to a new village I was saying yes to a lot of social invites and my group of friends is massive now. Some of the random people I got chatting to on the sofa at parties are now my closest friends.

If you're worried they were drunk and merry when you got the invite and might not mean it, it's NYE - won't they be drunk and merry and happy to see you again when you turn up? Wink

Elieza · 30/12/2019 11:38

I’d go but be careful and alert. Take your own beer so you know it’s not spiked drink.

You may arrive and it’s just them and they are looking for a Rose and Fred West scenario. ie looking for someone vulnerable with no ties to abuse.

I know that’s a worst case scenario but just be alert and hopefully they will go round houses and introduce you to people. It could be great fun. Shame you don’t have a pal from back home to come with you for safety.

Excellent point, honey bee!

Elieza I take your point, but I really don't think this is likely. There were about 10 from the family in the pub, across three generations, with the matriarch mum there too. I'm middle aged and so were most of them. I spent quite a lot of time talking to one of the women and from her hobbies and job I really don't think she is likely potential sex offender. I think they were just being friendly.

Sounds lovely, have fun!

Elieza!! Wow, that's all a bit heavy Grin

That's a bit of a leap. I mean, like, Skippy on steroids on the moon kind of leap.

FredaFrogspawn · 30/12/2019 13:36

Pleased you’ve decided to go. They’re probably pleased to have a new face there.

Dipsydoodle · 30/12/2019 13:36

Do it! Random nights and encounters like this are often the best. Have fun!

BloggersBlog · 01/01/2020 01:18

Hope it went well 😊

Haggisfish · 01/01/2020 01:20

Hope you had fun! Or are still having it!!

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 01/01/2020 02:12

How was the party op?

Newdilemma · 01/01/2020 08:34

Thanks everyone. I texted the wife who gave me her number at lunchtime yesterday to thank them for the invite and ask if it was still okay for me to come and details if it was and I never heard back! I guess it was just a drunken meaningless invite after all. Or, as the invite came from a husbanc, maybe the wife was a little less keen on a random woman turning up. I don't know.

I'm really upset tbh. I've found the move to a new place really hard (huge back story). It meant a lot to have a chance to go out and meet new people and have people be nice enough to invite me.

Thanks so much though, for remembering me and asking! That's cheered me up a bit that there are nice people in the world who have remembered me and asked about me!

OP if she was drunk she may have gotten her number wrong. Hopefully this is a year of making friends for you. Could you try a new hobby to connect with people?
