What recipe have you tried, hated and wished you never wasted so much time making it?

I have just tried a creamy garlic, chicken and mushroom sauce and I really wish I hadn't now. I consumed as much as I could as well as my DH, then thrown the rest in the bin (thank god for food waste recycling where I live!)

Another one here who can't make curry for shit. Thai - fine, Indian - always total crap.

Also, lasagne is a DICK.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/12/2019 23:37

Puff pastry.
Mary Berry would have condemned it with a withering comment about the soggy bottom.
Jus-Rol in future!

Chocmallows · 29/12/2019 23:39

Spring rolls with mixed veg and lots of scotch bonnet chillies, which I thought were sweet peppers. I'm sure I could taste bleeding tongue after the pain had settled.

Chickpea cake , vile

Mustbetimeforachange · 29/12/2019 23:41

We like ham in coke here. This year I cooked it in the instant pot & the family complained it smelt of farts when I let the pressure out! Still tasted nice though.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 29/12/2019 23:41

LauraMipsum, this is my favourite seitan recipe.
I've never found another I've got on with.

Woulditbeworth · 29/12/2019 23:42

Roast gnocchi. It was grim! Good job I was home alone and didn’t inflict it on anyone else.

Notso · 29/12/2019 23:48

Love ham in Coke/cherry coke. I've tried loads of other recipes and always go back to it.
Also love Jamie's gravy minus the star anise and with the addition of the turkey giblets and plenty of wine. It's absolutely delicious.

My fails are,
The Organised Mum slow cooker lemony chicken. Slimy chicken and bitter sauce, I tried everything to salvage it but it still had a bitter tang to it. Love her cleaning method and the other recipes though.

Scotch pancakes. A Nigella recipe they just tasted of bicarb/baking soda.

Any kind of cookie or biscuit I've ever made, generally expensive and disappointing.

Gingerbread houses. I never know what to do with them, we've spent ages creating and decorating them. Then feel they can't be eaten straight away because of the effort but then they're just gathering dust and going stale and I don't really want the kids to eat the £15 worth of sweets we've stuck on with icing, and gingerbread isn't even that nice to eat.

NewName54321 · 29/12/2019 23:56

Bread-maker bread.

Bread-maker now consigned to the back of the kitchen cupboard of doom. If there is ever a shortage of building bricks, it might come into its own again.

Nearlyoldenoughtowearpurple · 29/12/2019 23:58

Another vote for Jamie’s make ahead gravy, Xmas so much less stressful if bought from m and s, though plain bisto would be an improvement on his !
An ottolenghi rose water chicken recipe that looked like grey oily slime, but smelt floral 🤮

surlycurly · 30/12/2019 00:04

@chipsandgin I haven't laughed so much in ages at your 'prawn condoms' description. Hilarious. I'm glad they failed just for the comedy value 😂🙌

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 30/12/2019 00:08

I made my own naan bread once and it was revolting - rubbery and gave me a bloated, gassy feeling for hours after. I'd wanted something like you get in a restaurant as opposed to supermarket naan, but my efforts were much, much worse than the supermarket offerings. I used a BBC Good Food recipe. If anyone has a recipe for proper, light-as-air restaurant style naan that you can make in a domestic fan oven, I would be very interested.

Miljea · 30/12/2019 00:08

What is it about gingerbread houses? Just-why?

Are you expected to actually eat them? I thought they were just a decoration! One I couldn't be arsed with! 😊

Annasgirl · 30/12/2019 00:31

Pear and chocolate tart - all Christmas Day and it was awful.

Shelovesmilktray · 30/12/2019 00:32

Another vote for croissants. Endless rolling/folding/chilling over 48 hours to end up with flat, heavy, greasy, slightly crescent shaped brown doughy lumps. Disgusting. Never again

FruitcakeOfHate · 30/12/2019 00:37

Falafels. They always fucking fall apart. I buy Cauldron's. Vegan sausages. Cauldron Lincolnshire all the way.

Sh0na · 30/12/2019 00:40

Pumpkin pie.

Tillygetsit · 30/12/2019 00:45

Anything by Jamie Oliver. His recipes never turn out right for me and I'm normally a pretty good cook.

VeganCow · 30/12/2019 01:19

@LauraMipsum agree with you about the taste of vital wheat gluten and seitan. The couple times I’ve had a go I could taste the vwg and it also tasted very vegetable stock-y

I would like to try seitan from a vegan restaurant one day and see how professionals make it.
Have you ever made the shredded chicken from the Avocado and Ales recipe? Keep thinking I may have a go

eenymeenymineymo · 30/12/2019 01:52

Ratatouille- actually any recipe with aubergines in it, they go soggy & grey looking & taste disgusting, very bitter.
And I've tried salting them - or not, & the result is the same.

Leflic · 30/12/2019 02:12

Anything with yeast. Never proves properly how long I leave it in the airing cupboard/ windowstill / warm room.
And so said items just taste of yeast, with the consistency of concrete.

Such a waste of especially bought strong flour, yeast, currants, butter, icing sugar etc etc. Every year I try though,

Bubbinsmakesthree · 30/12/2019 02:12

I swear by Jamie’s gravy, though agree that you have to go easier on the star anise then he suggests.

Homemade crumpets are the food of the gods and homemade croissants, whilst far more work than I can ever normally justify, are absolutely sublime.

My attempts at homemade sushi have ended up as a lump of awful sticky rice only fit for the bin.

Lulabellamozzarella · 30/12/2019 02:16

Jamie’s Get Ahead Gravy.

Took hours and ended up thin and bland. I rescued it by adding a tub of Tesco Finest Turkey Gravy and some thickening granules.

managedmis · 30/12/2019 02:20

Sushi
Indian Food
Slow cooker

All shit

Confused
managedmis · 30/12/2019 02:21
