Boring where to park in London question

SouthWestmom · 29/12/2019 10:17

Hi all so we have to go to the Maudesley soon and it looks like parking is v limited (30 spaces). Any ideas for a local car park? Have looked but am failing.

Thank you Blouse I have replied.
I will sort this tomorrow- thank you all for the suggestions and reassurance on the driveway/alternatives.

There is a private car park in an old garden centre opposite the Maudsley just above Kings. I don't know how much it is.

However if at all possible I'd encourage public transport. You can park in Fernedene but if you forget to pay the parking at the exact time you're screwed. The parking police are super vigilant. I live in that area and have seen a lot of tickets on cars.

peridito · 30/12/2019 08:55

Downtothesea the private car park is a possibility but I wouldn't want to use it because of the staff .
My not v experienced driver son (with me as passenger) once used the entrance to pull into and drop off someone urgently needing A&E .
The staff stood in front of the car blocking us driving off and demanded £5 because we had "used the car park " .

peridito · 30/12/2019 09:02

@Noeuf I think Ferndene will be your best bet ,unless you've had a PM offering a space .

To those suggesting renting a private driveway ,knowing the vicinty well ,I'm struggling to think of nearby housing with driveways .

And although public transport would solve the problem, the OP has explained that this is not an option due to her DC's health .

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/12/2019 09:09

Phone the clinic at the Maudsley and speak to the staff. They are very used to the challenges their patients present, when my sister took my nephew the clinic staff where hugely helpful about where to park and how to get him to the clinic with the least stress possible. They told her that they had assessed some people in the car as they were unable to get out.

SodaSodaBanana · 30/12/2019 09:09

I took part in some research at Kings. They booked me a parking space - I had 2 v young dc at the time. They also had a couple of disabled bays. Could you call them and ask? If your DC might run off they might well be sympathetic and supportive around keeping them safe.

SouthWestmom · 30/12/2019 09:16

That's a good idea. I didn't want a home visit because I'm trying to encourage him to move away from home as a therapy place and to see clinics as helpful. He was ok until recently. Sent me a load of texts last night saying he won't cope and can't go. Really helpful idea to ring them or plan the Ferndene if we don't get a space first thing.
Public transport - he can't cope with doors, unfamiliar routes, changes in direction, walking round people, opening and closing barriers etc. He manages in the car with child locks and even then tries to jump out if scared.

Oh great suggestions by LoneCat and Soda.

Noeuf sorry to confuse but thinking about it The Fox on the Hill is nearer and as said above I think they now have a parking system wherby you pay for parking .So quite straightforward .

Good luck !

Pegase · 30/12/2019 09:22

There are parking spaces right outside Denmark Hill train stn if you come early enough.

peridito · 30/12/2019 09:28

if we don't get a space first thing I don't know if you're considering using the Kings car park but I really would advise against it .

There aren't enough adjectives in the world to describe how overcrowded it is .And it's not possible to que - you have to keep driving round which involves exiting the hospital grounds via a one way system back onto a busy main roads .

peridito · 30/12/2019 09:35

There are only 12 metered spaces in the road outside Denmark Hill Station, so might not be wise to rely on them.

BlouseAndSkirt · 30/12/2019 09:42

I think calling the clinic is a good idea.

The Maudsley car park is in front of one of the main entrances in Denmark Hill but the hospital as a whole is a spread out site with different buildings and entrances. They may be able to direct you to a reserved spot closest to where you need to be.

SouthWestmom · 30/12/2019 09:50

Ok so I will call them. I'm exhausted by all this - I was really hoping the new year would start better but now the trains are ruled out (if it was just one direct I'd have tried it maybe) and now the parking - you know the little things that just tip you over the edge?

MsJaneAusten · 30/12/2019 10:00

Is there someone else who could go with you with the sole role of ‘being in charge of parking’? Then you and DC could sit in the back (child lock on his side) and the two of you could get out right outside the hospital while friend/partner/advocate goes to park?

MsJaneAusten · 30/12/2019 10:01

Oh, and hugs. Massive ones. I have a DS with ASC and it’s the logistics that sometimes tip me over the edge Flowers

SouthWestmom · 30/12/2019 10:07

Thank you, he has several recent diagnoses and we are all adjusting.

Yes I will get dh to park - we both need to go to be part of the assessment but I think getting him there safely is better than us all arriving late/not at all.

At least I have a plan now.

I don't live there now but lived very near by for 20 odd years. Book someone's driveway, seriously,or you could well be driving round for hours looking for somewhere to park. The only person I know who knows exactly where to park in London is my dad and even he doesn't anymore,he'll get a cab as there are so many parking restrictions everywhere and the roads are so busy these days.

It won't be difficult to book someone's drive, they want you to use the website so it won't be complicated. That way there will be no one else competing for a space and you can go to the appt in a relaxed frame of mind.

peridito · 30/12/2019 10:29

@Noeuf I've PM'd you .But worried a flurry of posts etc are adding to your stress .So when I say no need to respond I do honestly mean it !

BlouseAndSkirt · 30/12/2019 10:51

Perdito, the Maudsley car park is different to the King’s one.

SouthWestmom · 30/12/2019 11:28

Thank you for the pms and all the advice. I feel a lot more sorted now.

OP posts:
peridito · 30/12/2019 12:07

Blouseandskirt - yes I'm aware of that .And has 30 spaces as opposed to Kings 190 .

twopintsprick · 30/12/2019 13:12

Sorry if I'm too late to this but is the spot in the Michael Rutter centre if it's for your DC? If yes then they have their own car park which you should be able to use

(I work at the Maudsley)

twopintsprick · 30/12/2019 13:13

spot - appointment

Sorry typing whilst doing something else

CFlemingSmith · 30/12/2019 13:17

Driveways are fabulous! Normally much more space and easier access than car parks. I use JustPark all the time

SouthWestmom · 30/12/2019 13:22

Yes it's the Michael Rutter - ocd/bdd? I think from pp they have 30 spaces?
