What day will I wash a life away

Hello,

When is the day you're not supposed to do any washing as you'll wash a life away?

Is it this week or have I missed it

New years day IIRC :)

AuntieMarys · 28/12/2019 09:42

What a load of tosh

CatToddlerUprising · 28/12/2019 09:43

New Years Day, my mum rings me every year to remind me.

SuePerb · 28/12/2019 09:47

you're not allowed to sweep either are you? Is that on new years day? (because you sweep all the good luck out of the house too...)

FeigningHorror · 28/12/2019 09:47

Well, today is the Feast of the Holy Innocents (when Herod offed the babies), when you’re not supposed to enter a strange house, go on a sea voyage or get married.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/12/2019 10:08

YY it's New Years Day

I never knew about the Feast of the Holy Innocents though ( and to think how many years I went to the Salvation Army services and the Church- never mentioned !)

Motherofmonsters · 28/12/2019 10:32

Ah I've spoken to MIL (I had never heard of it before she said about it) and she says it's today for the feast of the innocents

I wonder if it's different for different areas or if she's been doing it on the wrong day?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 28/12/2019 10:35

It's new years day, but I dont take any notice of it

FudgeBrownie2019 · 28/12/2019 10:36

New Years Day my Mum always said "wash one in, wash one out" and whilst I know rationally it's nonsense I'd never dare do laundry that day just in case.

PurpleDaisies · 28/12/2019 10:37

Are you actually planning to observe it?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/12/2019 10:38

New Year's Day.

I think it's a load of rubbish myself but my late nanna always used to say it and in memory of her I don't do any washing on that day now.

StillMedusa · 28/12/2019 10:39

Do people actually believe that rubbish?!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/12/2019 10:40

It’s NYD but I always thought the superstition was that you’d wash your luck, not life, away.

Motherofmonsters · 28/12/2019 10:45

I wouldn't however MIL believes it and has a poorly relative so I wouldnt want to tempt fate

OP posts:
PurpleDaisies · 28/12/2019 10:45

You can’t tempt fate. It isn’t a real thing.

ThisIsSanta · 28/12/2019 10:48

It is one day, to be sure and not worry your MIL. Some of us know it to be tosh, but it is a real worry to others, so for the sake of one day why not just appease her.

PurpleDaisies · 28/12/2019 10:49

I don’t tend to tell my mil when I’m doing washing.

Ginkypig · 28/12/2019 10:52

It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks though does it? If she wants to follow the rules of what someone else consideres a mythical or made up feast day then it's up to her, she's not bothering anyone else.

ParanoidGynodroid · 28/12/2019 10:56

Bloody hell, have I time travelled back to less enlightened/rational times?

People don't half believe some crap.

dottiedodah · 28/12/2019 10:57

Never heard of this! Seem to always be washing even though DC older now !

RaininSummer · 28/12/2019 10:58

How strange. I have never heard of these things.

SlatternIsTrying · 28/12/2019 10:58

I must advise my parents that they shouldn’t have got married on this day - it’s only their 52nd anniversary today!

ReanimatedSGB · 28/12/2019 11:02

Well, it's a load of old willy, of course. But if you want to be kind to your MIL and not worry her, you could follow the tradition to keep her happy (if she's lovely, and is anxious about someone who is ill). If she's a silly old bat forever pestering you with superstitious bullshit, just ignore.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 28/12/2019 11:05

I always play it safe and stop doing any washing for a week or so. Why risk it?

😉

HarrietThePi · 28/12/2019 11:05

Never heard of this. Won't impact me in any way but still it's interesting.
