What day will I wash a life away

Hello,

When is the day you're not supposed to do any washing as you'll wash a life away?

Is it this week or have I missed it

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 28/12/2019 12:06

I’ve never heard that one. I never do a wash on Good Friday though.

Too late for me today I put a load on at 9 o’clock this morning.....

lottiegarbanzo · 28/12/2019 12:07

Or you could just not tell her.

I've never heard of this one either. What cultural tradition does it come from?

Wellmet · 28/12/2019 12:09

It's just a tradition, why are people on here so sneery about everything?
'Laugh uproariously'? You might want to check your sense of humour if that's what gets you going.

SunshineAngel · 28/12/2019 12:10

Wow, I'm sure this is indeed a load of rubbish .. but a day where lots of kinds of housework are banned? That's something I can definitely get behind! :D

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 28/12/2019 12:11

Ah I've spoken to MIL (I had never heard of it before she said about it) and she says it's today for the feast of the innocents

SHIT!

You're kidding?

I've just finished a wash, FFS!

(I've never heard of this superstition before and now I'm wetting myself - what the hell is wrong with my brain?)

Redcrayons · 28/12/2019 12:13

I’m willing to sacrifice one day of washing to save a life. However I also thought this was a Good Friday thing, so I don’t do any over Easter either.

If anyone know of any other days when I’m not supposed to do any housework, PM me. Grin

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 28/12/2019 12:13

My late Father was a very intelligent man, yet still opened both back and front doors at the stroke of midnight to let the old year out and the new one in. Always amused me.

Never heard of this one either (but now intend to follow it . . . )

PollyPelargonium52 · 28/12/2019 12:15

I can't believe any of this makes a jot of difference.

WorraLiberty · 28/12/2019 12:23

I believe it as she does, if she didnt I would do it. Yes it's not logical but it's not going to hurt me by not doing it

Do you not have a free thinking mind though? Confused

Do you do everything just because your MIL believes it?

Motherofmonsters · 28/12/2019 12:33

Not at all, she has other things but I don't do those. This one is a thing that other people do and as I said it's not hurting me not to do a load of washing. It also won't cause a fall out if I did, I would just get a look while we carried on our day.

My grandma drummed this into me. It's the only day I don't do laundry. And, yes, I know it's nonsense.

I saw 5 magpies last week and a couple of hours later DS won some silver chocolate coins as a prize at the gym Wink.

I detest all these horrible ideas designed to keep women in check.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/12/2019 12:52

I detest all these horrible ideas designed to keep women in check. or maybe the women thought it up to get a day off.

katewhinesalot · 28/12/2019 14:52

Any excuse is valid in my book. Can someone please make a comprehensive list of excuses for all the other days in the year.

How does this keep a woman in check?

SproutinducingFarti · 28/12/2019 16:14

I only have one door! Will the new and old year use the same one at the same time or could I get stuck with 2 years at the same time or even no years. If the old year goes out but the new year won't/ can't use the same door does that mean I stop existing, and if I do, is that only to people who have been able to let the old year in or to everyone including myself.
Would either the old or new year be offended if I opened a window instead?

Ah , now I am fascinated by superstition and I reckon most of it came from the old Wise Woman in the Village .

There's a load of history attached to them , like the shoes on the table .

(My DC take the piss royally , I'm a rational, educated person, brought up in a religious family so I shouldn't give them brain space !)

Biber · 28/12/2019 16:21

I'd never heard of this! I wonder if it's possible to do one's laundry with intent and aim the ill fortune at anyone in particular? ... asking for a politically minded friend Grin

1forAll74 · 28/12/2019 16:48

I have never heard this about washing, and I am an oldie here. But now its been stated on here, I bet lots of people won't be doing their washing on that day.

I don't have a washing machine, but was going to wash a few undies in my sink that day, does this still count ? ha ha

Elieza · 28/12/2019 16:59

Never heard of it. Won’t be stopping me if I feel like getting some laundry done. Which is unlikely but you never know Xmas Confused

LaMarschallin · 28/12/2019 17:08

I think it's a bloody brilliant idea.
Back in the days of yore, when all I had was a big twig and a washboard, I'd have come up with all sorts of rubbish to get out of washing.
"Look, love, I know you want that crinoline for the New Year's Day Mead and Maypoling shindig, but this copper's a potential lethal weapon. It Could be You! And not in a good way".

Then I'd hitch my bosom up and have a nap.

I heard it as:
If you wash on New Year's Day
You will wash a friend away.

And took it to mean that, instead of a death, you could just have a huge falling out with your best friend and never speak to them again and weep every time you think of them. Look on the bright side, I say!

thickwoollytights · 28/12/2019 17:10

I thought it was Good Friday ConfusedHmm

Trewser · 28/12/2019 17:11

I'm deliberately going to put a wash on now. If you never hear from me again there might be something in it.

Somanysocks · 28/12/2019 19:10

I would have thought shoes on the table was a hygiene thing.

And can we choose who we wash out on new year's day?

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 28/12/2019 19:27

I don't have a washing machine, but was going to wash a few undies in my sink that day, does this still count ?

I wondered if washing your hands counts.

I must have killed about 20 people just because of needing a wee . . .
