Had anyone heard of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome

My dd has smoked cannabis for a few years and I hate it , she tells me it’s harmless and I have disagreed.

The other evening she started to vomit non stop ( 8 hours+) and very violently , she ended up in hospital on a drip. The consultant that saw her asked if she smoked weed , she said she did and he diagnosed Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome . He told her to get into a hot shower - she’d been moved to a side room on a ward by now- and the symptoms subsided, which confirmed his diagnosis as hot showers do relieve the vomiting . I was so worried, especially when there were specks of blood in the vomit.

The doctor said that once you have had this you will continue to have it all the while you Smoke cannabis, my dd has said she will never smoke it again (thank god).

Not sure why I’m posting this other than to say that cannabis is far from harmless.

That's interesting I hadn't heard of it before. Thanks.

Mumdiva99 · 27/12/2019 20:24

Never heard of it. Another reason to tell the kids not to try it.

Mymycherrypie · 27/12/2019 20:25

Best thing that could happen to her tbh. Maybe she’ll stop now.

Sofacat · 27/12/2019 20:49

It was horrific watching her , it was so frightening not to be able to do anything to help. She was given 4 litres of fluids and every type of anti sickness medication they had but they didn’t work. I panicked when she started bringing up blood.

She has said she will never smoke it again.

Never heard of it but know a few people I wish would get it to get them off the weed. Must have been very frightening.

I suppose you need to be very careful now she doesn't move onto another drug.

Sofacat · 27/12/2019 21:11

Hopefully this has scared her enough to not go near any type of illegal drugs .

work in the nhs and yes i have.
sounds textbook
glad she is ok

Sofacat · 27/12/2019 21:21

Thank you, I’m so glad the consultant knew what it was (the first doctor she saw said it was gastroenteritis) apparently it is often misdiagnosed .

How scary. Never heard of it. I hope she keeps her word

NoncePieforSanta · 27/12/2019 21:27

Someone was posting not that long ago about a husband who has it - the thread was something like "AIBU to call in sick tomorrow" and it came out during the course of the thread that this was why they were in A and E. He-obviously - can't/won't give up the weed, so has episodes every so often. I'd not heard of it before.

Sofacat · 27/12/2019 21:28

If she smokes it again she will become ill again, she was so desperate in the hospital for it to stop , I think she will stick to it.

Yes, I've certainly heard of it. Also cannabis-induced psychosis, and other problems.
As you say, cannabis is in no way innocuous.
At least your DD will now stop.

maras2 · 28/12/2019 02:14

I tried weed 50 years ago.I was so sick I never touched it again. Envy not envy.
I hope it has the same effect on your DD.
Don't worry about flecks of blood in the vomit, it's probably a mild Mallory - Weiss syndrome due to the persistent vomiting .

BlueSkyAtChristmas · 28/12/2019 02:21

Hi there as awful as this is, I’d see if as a blessing in disguise

I hate weed and how people see it as harmless

Rottnest · 28/12/2019 04:02

It must have been awful for you to watch OP. Cannabinoid Hyperemesis
Syn only occurs with regular cannabis use, once or twice weekly from memory, so hopefully your daughter will actually stop using illicit drugs now she has had a wake up call. Often users don't want to believe the truth because it needs them to change their behaviour, social circle, so hope your daughter stays strong and stays away from drugs.

Best wishes to her for the future, and to you.

Sofacat · 28/12/2019 04:33

Thank you, I do see it as a blessing in disguise. I initially thought that she would latch onto the gastroenteritis diagnosis as she has insisted that weed is harmless but she has fully accepted that this is caused by cannabis , so I do take my hat off to her for that.

concooktion · 28/12/2019 06:36

I've never heard of it.

she was so desperate in the hospital for it to stop , I think she will stick to it.

She probably going to need a lot of support from you with that especially if it means standing up to/losing/changing her friendship group.

Rottnest · 28/12/2019 06:41

Lets be straight here, Illicit/recreational drugs are never harmless/innocuous. If only

Elfnsafe1y · 28/12/2019 06:50

Nor is alcohol come to that.
Hyperemesis gravidum , if I've spelt that correctly , is the severe morning sickness some people get.

Soontobe60 · 28/12/2019 06:56

Such hysteria about cannabis here!
The vast majority of users are fully functioning adults who are not rampant addicts about to rob small children in order to fund their next spliff. Just like the vast majority of people who drink alcohol aren't alcoholics, or those who take paracetamol are addicted to pain killers. That's why many younger people don't listen to their parents about it's use.
I wouldn't be happy if my DDs smoked weed, just in the same way if they smoked tobacco because of the same associated health risks. I hate it when they go on a big night out and drink lots every so often because it puts them at risk, not because I think they'll turn into alcoholics.
FWIW, I did smoke weed a long time ago a couple of times. I also had an episode where I couldn't stop vomiting as a result, but didn't know that this condition existed so just put it down to the tobacco it was mixed with (I'm not a smoker). It was horrendous and put me off for life. Never tried it since. My DH has 1 smoke a day and it does wonders for his blood pressure!
I'm glad your DD is ok OP.

Shesalittlemadam · 28/12/2019 06:57

@Soontobe60 Not sure what your point is???

Booberella9 · 28/12/2019 07:01

OP your DD is at risk if she does stop. She is very likely to experience MH symptoms which could be mild e.g. depression and anxiety or severe i.e. full blown psychosis.

As PP said she is going to need support if she is really going to stop.

To be honest, the root cause of why she is using it needs to be addressed or else she will just go back to it or start on another drug.

Sofacat · 28/12/2019 07:53

She started smoking because her then boyfriend did. She has had counselling in the past due to anger issues and I will fully support her with whatever therapy/help she needs to stay off it.

The doctor said some people are ‘lucky’ in that they don’t get this sickness , others not so much.
