Had anyone heard of Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome

My dd has smoked cannabis for a few years and I hate it , she tells me it’s harmless and I have disagreed.

The other evening she started to vomit non stop ( 8 hours+) and very violently , she ended up in hospital on a drip. The consultant that saw her asked if she smoked weed , she said she did and he diagnosed Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome . He told her to get into a hot shower - she’d been moved to a side room on a ward by now- and the symptoms subsided, which confirmed his diagnosis as hot showers do relieve the vomiting . I was so worried, especially when there were specks of blood in the vomit.

The doctor said that once you have had this you will continue to have it all the while you Smoke cannabis, my dd has said she will never smoke it again (thank god).

Not sure why I’m posting this other than to say that cannabis is far from harmless.

What’s a whitey

What your DD experienced. The fact that I knew about them 30 years ago (and learned about them from people who were in their 70s then) suggests that as Shakespeare said "There's nothing new under the sun."

Not fun, it has to be said - they're quite frightening. But rare and no one ever died from one (despite feelings). They're a bit of a mystery, and will doubtless remain so until the grown ups get around to researching. As for "will have them forever onwards ..." well that's not the case.

My personal guess would be the compound in cannabis which prevents emesis must have a paradoxical action under certain circumstances. But as I say, there needs to be some proper research.

Called a "whitey" because the person affected goes white as a sheet. Best treatment is to lie down and not panic - they pass.

The doctor said it was dangerous- she was severely dehydrated and blood was visible in the vomit from her throat due to her reaching so much. She was continually sick for more than 8 hours, I’m glad she wasn’t alone.

TheUser420, I’ve never heard of an 8 hour whitey where someone had to be hospitalised and on fluids. I don’t think it’s the same thing! Just like being sick after a drink isn’t the same as alcohol poisoning.

Of course unless the DD grew, harvested and cured the cannabis themselves, we have no way of knowing what an unscrupulous dealer might have adulterated it with. But then it's got all to do with cannabis. If a substance has been used for 6,000 years, and it's only in the past 20 people are reporting problems, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work out the problem.

People died of methanol poisoning in the US during prohibition - which had nothing to do with alcohol either.

Nah she didn't have a whitey. They're grim but not even in the same ball park as this.
