How often do you clean your rings?

Boring subject but genuinely curious. My engagement ring is a diamond, seems to catch all the soap and dirt in the setting underneath, if I don’t clean it every week it looks cloudy and dull, though I often leave it longer. My wedding ring is also diamond and needs cleaning a lot. Are other people cleaning their rings this much and it’s just never mentioned?

I've had my engagement ring for over 20 years and it has never occurred to me to clean it to be honest. I assume it gets cleaned when I wash my hands, which is often.

WTCT · 26/12/2019 21:22

I clean mine most weeks, but I do it with a Steradent tablet, so not particularly onerous! Makes a massive difference though.

brightbluesky · 26/12/2019 21:24

My engagement ring is a cluster ring, lots of little gaps for dirt and soap to get caught, so I clean mine weekly too. It always sparkles! I get life time free cleaning from beaverbrooks (we bought it from there) but it's out of the way and more often than not I forget when I'm nearby..

It's good to take pride and look after your fine jewellery, I wouldn't worry :)

I clean mine weekly, I enjoy the ritual and sparkly rings afterwards

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 21:26

@isabellerossignol I thought washing my hands would clean mine but it quite clearly doesn’t.

OK, it sounds like this is something I was unaware of.

How do you clean a ring? What with?

meow1989 · 26/12/2019 21:27

Mine is an emerald cut aquamarine, beautiful but can become dull if dirty so I give it a little scrub with a toothbrush when it's looking a bit less clear.

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 21:28

@WTCT sterident tablet is a good idea. I use fairy liquid, hot water and one of those little teepee tooth brushes to get in through the setting

@isabellerossignol soak in hot water and fairy liquid for half hour ish, little teepee toothbrush scrub underneath and inbetween the setting prongs

Buffalo I'm off to do that now. I'll be back later to tell you how I got on! Smile

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 21:34

@isabellerossignol fab! Let me know how you get on. Let it soak a good while, good scrub, and a rinse under a hot tap after Smile

Leave your rings in a shot glass of gin then clean gently with a baby toothbrush the next day and your stones will sparkle

isabellerossignol · 26/12/2019 22:04

I'm back! Was too impatient to leave them for half an hour, took them out after 20 minutes and scrubbed with a soft toothbrush. Wow! Had no idea it would make such a difference!

I'll have to do this a bit more regularly than once every 20 years Blush

Oopsinamechangedagain2020 · 26/12/2019 22:24

Never. I wash my hand really well with soap and water though. Hopefully that helps!

thistimelastweek · 26/12/2019 22:29

I do mine about twice a year along with my small earring studs. Soak in a shampoo solution and clean with an old soft toothbrush. Sparkling!

checkoutchick22 · 26/12/2019 22:36

Oops, I don't....
Thought it was bad luck to take them off!!

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 23:35

@checkoutchick22 no not at all! Especially to avoid cloudy unsparkly rings

OP posts:
BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 23:36

@Oopsinamechangedagain2020 no washing your hands doesn’t get grime and soap build up out of the ring setting

BuffaloCauliflower · 26/12/2019 23:36

@isabellerossignol glad to hear it! Keep it up Smile

I’ve only had my engagement ring for 10 months and my wedding ring for about 6 weeks, but I try to clean them every week. I use the same method as Buffalo by putting them in really hot, just boiled water and a drop of washing up liquid, then scrubbing with a baby toothbrush.
The jewellers mine came from told me that was the best way to clean them, as long as you really thoroughly rinse them afterwards. Apparently the main thing that makes them look dirty over time is actually soap residue from washing your hands.

MyBeloved · 26/12/2019 23:41

I use a toothbrush and a blob of toothpaste in warm water to clean mine. Or I ask the jeweller to pop it in the ultrasonic machine.

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/12/2019 10:11

@Ladyratterley yep I can definitely tell it’s soap getting under the diamond that makes it look cloudy and dull. It’s the most obvious thing to get stuck in there between the prongs. Washing your hands does not wash your rings!

I do mine once every few months (and my diamond stud earrings) with bicarb soda mixed with a splash of water and a good scrub with a baby toothbrush.

BlueThursday · 27/12/2019 10:43

I take mine yearly to the jewellers for cleaning but might try some of these in the interim
