The cork's not budging. Is there anything I can do?

I've twisted a Prosecco work with the nutcrackers before - and it worked 😅😂.

Good luck!

petrocellihouse · 24/12/2019 18:36

Leave it standing upright away from everything else to allow the pressure from the bubbles to work its magic. Then get a tea towel and and twist the bottle, not the cork. If that fails, get a teaspoon and gradually wedge it under the rim bit of the cork and work it round, easing the cork up. This advice based on similar experiences! Grin

Next door neighbour?! It's one of the things I always worry about if DH leaves me/dies - how will I open the prosecco/Champagne? Grin

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 24/12/2019 18:38

Yes towel.
Twist the bottle not the cork.

Failing that, ask a neighbour.

Keep calm, this is an emergency.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/12/2019 18:38

Elastic band on the cork, tea towel and twist.

Or a monkey wrench

WorraLiberty · 24/12/2019 18:38

Controlled explosion?

This is an emergency after all Xmas Grin

BuddhaAtSea · 24/12/2019 18:38

Good god, that would really give me a cold sweat!
Bash the bottom a bit and leave it for a few minutes?

QueenTaTe · 24/12/2019 18:40

Stab repeatedly with the knife. Well that's what I did in an emergency

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/12/2019 18:41

I don't have nutcrackers unfortunately. It is currently standing all on its own in the corner of the kitchen (in disgrace lol).

I'm normally good at opening fizz - I do the tea towel over the cork and turning the bottle not the cork. But the bottle won't turn
Will try the teaspoon trick, thanks!

Oooh will try elastic band on the cork for grip first!

Rubber gloves can sometimes work for purchase as well.

Biscusting · 24/12/2019 18:45

Smash it on the floor and suck it out of the carpet 🤷🏼‍♀️

squashyhat · 24/12/2019 18:45

Put it on the kitchen windowsill or under a priceless ornament and turn your back for 30 seconds. Carnage guaranteed Grin

Bogoffrain · 24/12/2019 18:46

Cork screw, half way down and twist

TheBlueStocking · 24/12/2019 18:46

If you keep wiggling it from side to side while pushing up, it should loosen. It just takes a while sometimes.

Melfish · 24/12/2019 18:48

Mine just flew off as soon as I took the metal cagey thing off! Glad my face wasn't near it. Usually I have to try the wiggling and twisting thing.

DonPablo · 24/12/2019 18:49

Do it outside, that baby is gonna fly!

Mrsjayy · 24/12/2019 18:49

Do the wiggily thing it usually works

Doilooklikeatourist · 24/12/2019 18:50

We generally use the corkscrew ( have an old fashioned waiters friend ) and remove the cork that way

Mrsjayy · 24/12/2019 18:50

I hate opening fizz the last 2 bottles Dd bought had a screw top much easier.

Janek · 24/12/2019 18:51

Put on a pair of washing up gloves and twist the bottle, not the cork.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 24/12/2019 18:52

The elastic band for grip worked and meant I could still put a tea towel over it!

Thank you Mumsnet, and cheers - merry Christmas!
