Sitting in hospital canteen listening to staff spouting racist rubbish

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 09:06

Thankfully canteen staff rather than nurses.

Usual Britain First type stuff. Talking about how by x year white people will be a minority and one saying how she can't say Great Britain anymore, only Britain. That it's no longer great because of the immigrants.

Is it the sort of thing Pals would deal with? Am I over reacting by thinking this isn't on?

Worst coffee I've ever had as well.

And the staff are having a conversation at full shouting volmne, one behind the serving area and one at the tills some distance away. I'm getting a head ache.

Yep, go to PALS. You shouldn’t have to listen to that.

PrettyPurpleFeather · 23/12/2019 09:11

Report straight to Pals, try and see if you can discretely record them so it's not brushed under the carpet. The staff will be employed by an external catering company & they won't want to lose their contract. Take your complaints to Pals & see what happens.

Or upload the video onto the hospital/catering company's twitter page & ask how they're going to deal with it. You'll won't get a brush off then.

oldstripeyNEWname1 · 23/12/2019 09:22

Yes, absolutely complain in whatever way you feel comfortable doing so. Today. Are you a patient? Visitor? Nursing staff can refer/escalate (cqc inspectors check staff know complaints process)

Pals is a starting point. Even if they themselves don't progress with complaint, they can work with you to refer/signpost through the complaints procedure for your hospital trust.

All you need to do is have basic details of where, when and what you saw. They will investigate. You should ideally be asked what action you'd like taking (ie 'resolution' and what contact you want maintained with you by PALS/complaints team.

Absolutely not OK for this behaviour to be tolerated.

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 09:42

I'm a patient. I'm in theatre admissions now but will talk to someone later.

Nobody should be having that sort of conversation at work. Definitely say something.

PlanDeRaccordement · 23/12/2019 10:56

Idiots. White people already are a global minority.
But yes, the Great Britain comment was xenophobic and I would report it.

MonstranceClock · 23/12/2019 10:59

They’re ignorant. That’s why they’re canteen staff and not doctors.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 23/12/2019 11:14

Your comment is rather damn Ignorant in itself @MonstranceClock !

How rude .

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 23/12/2019 12:11

The definition of "racism" is being prejudiced against others based on the belief that your own race is more superior than an another....sounds like the hospital staff were discussing immigration - immigration and racism are not the same thing

Yes they may be a little ignorant and certainly it was the not the place to be discussing such topics but they're guilty of poor judgment that's all at this point without knowing the full conversation/context of it

Being xenophobic is not illegal last I checked....

Jeansforme · 23/12/2019 12:14
Hmm
FAQs · 23/12/2019 12:19

Maybe remind them how many immigrant hospital staff are within the NHS, my daughters lovely consultant is from India (frustrated by the NHS haemorrhaging money not reusing perfectly useable hospital equipment) and her physio is from Africa.

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 12:19

Might not be illegal but they're in a customer facing role, discussing immigrants negatively. I could have been an immigrant for all they knew. They should keep such opinions out the workplace. I'd be in trouble if I had a similar conversation St work.

Sarcelle · 23/12/2019 12:20

You are delightful @MonstranceClock

OhTheRoses · 23/12/2019 12:21

Shocking behaviour but it's set against NHS patriarchy where consultants think they can use patients' first names whilst expecting a title. Where female patients are called in as Jane Smith but men are called in as Mr Smith. Where mothers are referred to as mum as in "you mum" which is wholly reductive and actually means silent or unable to speak and is unacceptable shorthand for "Are you Sophie's mum?"

I think it's worth reporting but it can't be taken in isolation and change has to start at the top. And no, no nurse may use my first name if she or he is at the same time addressing my Dr as Dr or Mr. I am not sybordinate to the doctor. It should be all titles: Mrs/Ms/Miss Smith, Mr/Dr Jones, Nurse Green or John, Jane and Angela. That would underline equality in the NHS.

misspiggy19 · 23/12/2019 12:21

They shouldn’t be discussing this in front of customers. Vile behaviour. Definitely report them.

MonstranceClock · 23/12/2019 12:23

Thank you 💃🏼

plantainchips · 23/12/2019 12:29

Definitely, definitely go & report it to PALS

@OhTheRoses
I’m not sure at all what the relevance of what you are saying on this thread. So random.

gamerwidow · 23/12/2019 12:31

Report it it to PALS. We have a zero tolerance policy for staff and patients with regards to racism at our hospital and I expect most other hospitals will have the same.
It will be taken seriously.

OhTheRoses · 23/12/2019 12:36

Why don't hospitals have zero tolerance policies for sexism?

plantainchips · 23/12/2019 12:44

If you want to discuss sexism in the NHS, make a new thread ffs

gypsywater · 23/12/2019 12:47

@plantainchips she is still nursing her narcissistic injury at being called by her first name and likes any excuse to have a little NHS bash Grin

HJWT · 23/12/2019 12:50

Honestly I can't stand english people (I am english born and bred all my family are english) they are lazy rude and all they do is complain!NEVER get my food order right if its all english workers and the other week my son was in hospital not one english person struck up a conversation with me the only person other than staff that spoke to me in length was a lovely polish woman!

English people need to get there head out their ass and open their eyes 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

UhKevin · 23/12/2019 13:04

gypsy and plantain

Swear to God, one of these days I’m going get round to starting ‘Roses’ titles bingo’ whenever I see an NHS-related thread.

gypsywater · 23/12/2019 13:09

@UhKevin hahaha, it's the speed of response that gets me too, she must have an alert set up for any thread with NHS in title Grin
